DEVOTION by Maile Meloy makes its big debut today! This single-volume short story, beautifully outfitted as a palm-sized gift book tells an unsettling tale about a young single mother whose new home becomes a kind of nightmare she must resolve on her own.
Okay, I'm super excited about this book. And I'm not really a bourbon drinker. To be fair, I AM a spirits "enthusiast"—I love flavors, and there are so many to be had in liquid form—but when it comes to whiskey, give me a Caol Isla or an Oban over a bourbon any day. My point is: You don't have to be a bourbon drinker to love this book.
Unraveling the myths and misconceptions of America’s iconic whiskey, Bourbon Empire traces bourbon’s wild ride from the American frontier into the international spotlight. It’s a tale of innovation, success, downfall, and resurrection, with a cast of characters replete with politicians, frontiersmen, businessmen and critics.
For me, at least, what set this apart from the other libation-centric literature that’s been popping up left and right was Mitenbuler’s narrative-yet-informative approach to the history of “America's Native Spirit.” He undercuts much of the mythology surrounding the different labels' origin stories, even as he celebrates the enthusiasm we have for those legends. In addition to dropping the names of small distilleries I’ve never heard of (and reviews of their products both good and bad), Mitenbuler does a great job of presenting the reality behind the corporate powerhouses of the bourbon industry without vilifying them.
I could throw out some catchy lines about Bourbon Empire being a perfect cocktail of two parts historic narrative, one part science, and and one part connoisseur's editorial… But I won’t. Books like this are better taken neat, so read it yourself and distill your own opinions.

Thoroughly engrossed by my #FridayReads: Ken Robinson's new book CREATIVE SCHOOLS. Since picking it up a few weeks ago, I've already made several conscious changes in my own life with regard to how I learn and how I teach others. It's a brilliant dialogue on how to affect the change you want to see in education, whatever your role in that system may be. I've been collecting tattoo inspiration for almost a decade now, despite having no ink to speak of. In large part because whenever I do have the money to spend, I invariably use it to travel instead. So far, I'm 100% satisfied with the weighting on that decision. But I love the idea of orange blossoms as a motif for a few reasons: 1) They're a warm climate native, like yours truly; 2) My Granny grows oranges and other citrus in her backyard, and she's a constant source of inspiration and admiration in me; and 3) Oranges are the only fruit that expresses it's complete life cycle simultaneously--leaf, blossom, and fruit at once. Thanks for the unexpected inspiration, PRH Art Department.

I am LOVING this book! I just got it today I can't put it down--nine chapters in and no sign of stopping. If you like a dark sense of humor, folksy levity, mob stories, Irish accents, and/or a good caper, put it on your calendar for May 12th!
