Need a last minute holiday gift for your cat? I bet they’d enjoy some dried pasta!
Storytime: The best part about this video was when I went to the supermarket to purchase the pasta. I was looking for a specific size and an employee was restocking the shelves. He asked if I needed something in particular and I said I needed to find the right shape. He gave me a box and said “these are the best ones”. I told him, “Oh no no, I don’t intend to eat them. This shape’s just for my cats to play with”. He laughed and said it was the first time he heard anyone say that. 😹
It's early December. In the northern hemisphere it's getting colder and darker. The winter holidays evoke images of staying cozy indoors, all bundled in warm sweaters, holding steaming mugs, eating hot meals. Many of us have a cultural practice of gift-giving to symbolize an ideal of generosity.
However, the dissonance creeps in. You miss the bus and stand outside in the cold until your fingertips and face begin to hurt, and a shiver enters your chest. You see advertisements for endless products by companies you know profit from genocide. You wonder how cozy or generous any of this really is.
Every time I feel a shiver in my chest, I think of my friends in Gaza. I am living in an apartment with heaters. My friend Fadel is living out of a torn tent in the cold. When I hear about people budgeting for gifts, I think about Fadel trying to decide to use his meager funds on medication or food because there isn't enough for both. I visited my childhood home recently, and I know Fadel's childhood home was bombed with him inside. People around me are planning out travel to see family, and I know he cannot yet afford travel to get urgent surgery to remove shrapnel from his body.

As we near the big gifting holidays I, your trusted lifestyle blogger, have mapped out the
Top Ten Hot Gifts for 2025!
Handwritten cards with heartfelt sentiments that you struggle to say in person. Write to your siblings and friends that you love them. Never assume they know, tell them.
Quality time. Don't buy them some plastic that's gonna end up in a landfill. Take them out for dinner, have a long phone call, go to mini golf together.
That grocery item that you know they love but is never on sale.
Clothes that you don't wear anymore, knick-knacks you own that they've complimented, books you've already read. Re-gifting is IN this year!
Tasks and errands. Have they been talking about taking their shoes in to get resoled forever? Has their car been full of the same recycling or donations for months? Do they need help calling and booking a dentist appointment?
Knowledge. Gift them a few lessons in your second language. Help them create an excel spreadsheet or organize their computer downloads folder. Teach them origami, or book binding, or how to recaulk their bathtub!
A library card. Take them to get one, download the app on their phone, explain all the things they can do through the library beyond reading books! Bonus if you put holds on your favorites for them.
Local art. Did you know you that many artists will accept money to draw/paint/create whatever you want?! It's like Generative AI but cool and not terrible!! For example my sister paid a local potter to make me a mini butterdish because I complained about them always being too big.
Did I mention the cards? Because you can also send POSTCARDS! Not only do many artists sell postcards, but you can support your local post office and prove to the government that mail services are a public right and the employees deserve fair pay and good working conditions.
Gift yourself and your loved ones the reminder that just because it's on SALE doesn't mean your SAVING anything. Especially as we approach this late-stage capitalist overconsumption time of year.
