How does your blog theme reflect your character?

Ooooh! Arabella's is the blog on which I went all out. It's about as fancy as I can make it with my zero HTML/CSS skills.

Well, cats. Everywhere. For obvious reasons. That's pretty much the first thing we learn about Ara in the books, after all. "Weird woman with cat obsession." It's very stark in monochrome, to reflect the emotional bleakness that is sucking her in. Arabella's world is increasingly becoming a world devoid of colors and that's what the blog reflects.

And suddenly she was thanking him far more ardently than he liked. He almost wished she might forget him, since she seemed the sort to reveal to a fellow cat lover the ‘nice’ black market potions brewer who had helped her. But then coins clinked on the table and against one another and his hands moved into view, scooping the piles quickly into a small pouch.

She’d paid it all up front and while he didnt plan to fleece her, he also would prefer having the full amount in his pocket. He wasn’t going to go back on his word so really this all worked out fine. But for her to be so trusting of him not to walk out with her money…must have been a hufflepuff. A very very naïve hufflepuff. Trusting people and giving them the benefit of the doubt was one thing, but taking innocent until proven guilty to mean ‘won’t pick up and pocket galleons if you throw them on the ground and keep walking’ was too far. And Hufflepuffs normally had the patience, persistence and work ethic to at least be passingly good at potions.

He needed to stop thinking in Houses. This wad the real world. There were no points for good work, no prefects of Heads of House to provide guidance…it was hard work and it was unforgiving, but it was his new home and he was damned if he wasn’t going to make it his domain. “You’re…welcome.” Cat shows indeed, he eyed her with a mix of pity and recognition that she was weirder than he. This woman really needed a hobby. Perhaps she should take up…wait, what were his hobbies? Well at least he didn’t think cats were the be all and end all. He drank some more pumpkin juice and resettled his occlumentic defences and his mask of businesslike efficiency.

"It shouldn’t take me long, would you prefer delivery to be face to face or an owl?" If he was going to take her money all at once the least he could do was to let her choose the method of delivery.

Truth be told, it hadn’t even occurred to Arabella that the man might still scam her. She might have known all the scams to rob desperate squibs of their money, but this was a deal for plain old cat medicine, it was nothing that would make her suspicious. Besides, he had been so kind to her, in his own way.

She faltered when he spoke of delivery, realizing that the meeting was coming to an end. It had gone better than she’d expected. Easier, too, and he seemed none the wiser that she was no witch. “Oh, well…” Arabella pursed her lips, once more toying with the strings of her handbag. “I wouldn’t mind a face-to-face delivery, to be honest. If it isn’t too much of a bother to you…” It would be nice to have a visitor, even if he was only there on delivery. “I could offer a cup of tea, if you don’t mind, while we wait for the first dosage to take effect. If something goes wrong…”

She met the young man’s eyes, flashing him a pained smile. “Since the potion is illegal I can’t take him anywhere if there are problems. Not that I expect your potion to be flawed! But she might not take well to it, she could be allergic…” Arabella shrugged, not quite able to find the right words to describe her vague worries that something might go wrong. “Forgive me, this is my first time using banned potions, it makes me a bit anxious.” While talking, she had already searched her bag for paper and a pen. On the back of a grocery receipt, she jotted down her address and pushed the note towards Severus.

A Friend In Need // Arabella & Mary // December 31st

He was a terrible person and she hated him with an intensity that couldn’t be normal, but that didn’t change the way she felt. Mary had given up trying to understand why him, out of all the men she had met, somehow he had stayed. And she was an idiot for it, and she hated herself every time she thought of him. There were so many things between them. Hell, it seemed even life was against them. And yet there she was wondering why things had to be so complicated. Mary ran a hand through her messy curls and accepted the bottle but didn’t drink; she just kept it close to her chest.

"I— He just… snuck up on me when I less expected him. I never thought I would meet someone like him, then he got under my skin and I have tried everything to shake him out, but I can’t do that, he always finds a way back. And I… I thought he was gone for good, that he would leave me alone and I had made my peace with that—" She brought the bottle to her lips and closed her eyes at the burning sensation in het throat.

"I’m pathetic," she finally accepted. This wasn’t her at all. "Relationships are not for me. I wouldn’t drag anyone into my mess, it’s not fair. But if I ever— I’ve always thought that finding a good man, someone I can bring home to my dad and say ‘He’s here because he wants me just the way I am and he’s nice, I’m sure you’ll like him’ would be great. But no, here I am, and there are times I think this will never end."

Mary got to her feet and placed the bottle on the counter. “I’m sorry for this, Ara. I shouldn’t have— I— thank you for coming, I really appreciate it, but I think I need a good shower and get ready for tonight.”

Arabella pursed her lips as she listened to Mary’s ramblings. So much more than ramblings, for they were the confirmation of suspicions she’d had for years. All that time she had fervently hoped that she was making it up in her fretful mind, fuelled by cheesy romance novels and too much time on her hands. She had suspected, and dreaded, for in real life impossible love wasn’t romantic, it brought you nothing but pain.

She followed suit in standing up, and gave her friend a weak, somewhat forced smile. There were many things she wanted to tell Mary about how foolish and dangerous it was to harbor such feelings, and yet what good would that be? It would do nothing but upset her further. Walker Avery would never be able to look past Mary’s blood status, this was a fact for Arabella. And that, cruel as it sounded even in her own mind, was a blessing. Whatever Mary’s feelings may be, Avery’s hate ensured that nothing would ever come out of it.

“Of course you do,” she said mildly, still forcing herself to keep smiling though she would rather be shaking some sense into Mary. “Have a shower and relax some more, and stay away from the alcohol. If our estimates are right and tonight’s another attack… I would rather know you are at your best if you are out there fighting Death Eaters.”

She gave her friend another tight hug before she walked to the fireplace. “Let’s hope it isn’t ‘until tonight.’” Arabella paused, considering her friend for a long moment. “You will find that good man you can take home to meet your father, Mary. You just have to wait a little longer.” And then Avery would be nothing but an unsavoury memory. Bless.

Fanning the Flames // Vulcan & Arabella

Vulcan didn’t like the look the woman gave his precious potion, but he was more distracted by the way her hair was completely disheveled. Well, it wasn’t really, but there were a few flyaways. And the pores on her face. They were all different sizes. A freckle or two tucked away in a corner. The way her fingers wrapped around the bottle. So many details. The potion was heightening his observational skills. A flutter of her eyelids told him she wasn’t going to drink it. She didn’t have to say a word.

"Oh, it’s not alcohol or anything like that," Vulcan tried to reason with her. "It makes you super conscious of everything. It’s almost like being omniscient. Maybe save it for later. Merlin knows I’ve had enough." Yes. He had had enough. He was babbling. Vulcan didn’t babble. Ever. His senses might have been sharpened, but his brain-mouth filter was dissolving.

"Miss, I’d gladly help you any other night, but I have a purpose tonight," Vulcan replied. "Now, I don’t know what it is yet, but I think if I just keep going down hallways I’ll find it soon enough."

Something dawned on him, then. He would have to use that potion far more often. “Then again,” he started slowly, narrowing his eyes at her, “I did notice how eager you are to have me show you the way. Why couldn’t you just retrace your steps or go back the way you came until you find the lift? I think you’re hiding something. That’s why you don’t want me down here. What is it? What’s your big secret?” Vulcan stepped closer to her, standing up straight to use his six and a half feet of height to its full potential, and stared down his nose at her. He loved intimidating people, but for all he knew, she could really be lost. He wouldn’t know without getting a few more words out of her.

This wasn’t going well, Arabella decided, and if that wasn’t the understatement of the year. A super conscious enemy, yes, that was exactly what she needed, especially when he was already becoming suspicious of her. She had to tilt back her head to meet the man’s eyes, and fight the urge to take a step back. He was far too close for comfort, too tall and towering and intimidating. She gulped. “I…” Arabella’s voice broke.

Her eyes flickered around, hoping to catch sight of another Order member, but there was no one. And the man couldn’t be a Death Eater, right? A Death Eater would be wearing a mask. So he was Ministry and wouldn’t hurt her, not really. Probably. Hopefully. Except he was high on something questionable, and probably had no idea what he was doing, or what he shouldn’t be doing. But she just had to keep believing he wouldn’t hurt her.

“I have no big secret!” She tittered nervously, fervently wishing that she were better at this. With people. With men. “I’m not hiding anything, I’m just lost.” The flickering shadows were turning into Death Eaters at the edges of her vision, every crackle of the torches turned into footsteps. Arabella’s body was taut with tension, yet she knew she couldn’t run. If she ran, it would all be over, and she was just as likely to run into an enemy as a friend. “I just need help, that’s all there is to it!”

She eyed the man’s face from underneath her lashes, hoping for some sympathy in his eyes and wilting when she found none. She forced herself to smile. It was a desperate move, and doomed to fail, but what was there to lose? “Maybe I would just like to enjoy the company of a handsome gentleman a little longer,” she said in her best attempt at a sultry tone of voice. It might not have been half bad, if it hadn’t been for the tremble in her voice.
