pt2 Husbands of River Song rewatch:
It’s actually really painful watching River using her breakdown as a distraction because you know she’s 100% in her belief that the Doctor never loved her:
Flemming is sure the Doctor’s around because he knows well enough that River is the Doctor’s ‘consort’ and River doubles down and dares him:
“Well, go on! Scan it then! Two hearts, stupid clothes! You can’t miss him!”
Meanwhile, the Doctor is increasingly getting alarmed because he is very much in the ship and tries to dissuade her with a quiet: “River!”
“Go on!” River shouts, “Scan the whole parsec! He’s not here!”
This stops Twelve for a second, again taken aback by how fiercely River thinks he doesn’t love her.
“God knows here he is right now but I promise you, he’s doing whatever the hell he wants and not giving a damn about me! And I’m just fine with that!”
Even at this point when the camera flashes back to Flemming you can see he finally believes her and he even looks at her with some form of… pity.
And this is where miss Alex Kingston, who has been serving since moment one just really goes into this absolutely brilliant monologue.
“When you love the Doctor its like loving the stars themselves!
“You don’t expect a sunset to admire you back!”
“And if I happen to find myself in danger, let me tell you the Doctor is not stupid enough or sentimental enough, and he is certainly not in love enough to find himself standing in it with me!”
In a lot of ways River is her mother’s daughter but in this case, River is also her father’s daughter. The belief that they’re love is greater than their partner’s. And its not that something that comes from nowhere.
The first time they met, she tried to kill the Doctor, and in the next instance they got married in another reality because he had to fix time back to save the universe. And then almost every instance Eleven had to keep himself apart from River because he knew how she will die. Eleven hated endings and didn’t want to engage in that idea.
The consequence is, Eleven brought more harm than good to River. And brought this wrong perception of the Doctor to River– that the Doctor isn’t sentimental nor a fool, nor someone who falls in love willy nilly with people.
But the Doctor is a fool, and sentimental, and the Doctor does love. They’re just terrible at saying and sharing it.
Fortunately this is Twelve, he doesn’t run or fidget, unlike Eleven who couldn’t take standing still, who couldn’t stop running far and wide. Twelve can stand still.
