5 Quick Book Recommendations of Practical Theology to Steel Your Spine for This Present Darkness

1. Orthodoxy - G.K. Chesterton | “Orthodoxy is Chesterton’s greatest book, and the greatest gift in this book is deep joy. This is not a trivial, superficial joy, but a profound joy in the world which we have been given, a joy powered by gratitude to the sparkling, joyous, God who gave us this uproarious existence.” ~From N.D. Wilson [I just can’t say it any better than Nate, so I let him say it. :) ]

2. The Consolation of Philosophy - Boethius | Geoffrey Chaucer, author of The Canterbury Tales (another great book that I’ll recommend below), specifically thanks Jesus for Boethius’s book.  And, I join Chaucer in thanks to our King: this book is a tremendous boon to weary souls by helping you to think God’s thoughts after Him - and to take great comfort in the sovereign, loving, merciful hand of God’s care for His people and all things.

3. The Canterbury Tales - Geoffrey Chaucer | The most joyful, theologically faithful criticism of hypocrisy (among other things) I’ve ever read.  You need this ammunition and example for how to fight hypocrisy in your own heart, in the church, and in the world around you.

4. The Underground Man - Dostoyevsky | Single best brief work on the dangers of rationalism leading to passivity and the prideful judgment of everything and everyone else.

5. Paradise Lost - John Milton | This book is still my favorite book after the Bible, and it contains so much applied Biblical and systematic theology that I cannot recommend it highly enough.  Here is one example to stoke your curiosity: at one point in the story, Adam is speaking with the angel Raphael and they are both marveling at Eve’s beauty.  Then Raphael says to Adam that while it is good and right for him to desire his wife sexually, Adam ought to always be aiming to cultivate in himself a love for his wife in a way that is more aligned with our God-likeness rather than our animal-likeness.  Put more simply and abruptly: animals have sex like we do (or in this sense, we like them), but God does not -because God is Spirit (and does not have a body like men). So, Milton is saying that as husbands, we should certainly enjoy our wives physically; but we must also consistently cultivate love for her heart and most importantly her holiness - “he who loves his wife loves himself.”

The Most Important Thing Right Now

If you had asked me 9 years ago what the most important question Christians needed to answer was, I would have shot back at you, “Are you a Calvinist?”

Looking at where we are right now in American Christendom, I can say with certainty that the most important question to be answered right now is, “Are you reading your Bible?”

And I don’t just mean reading it lightly. I mean longing for it as the deer pants for the water. Desiring it more than your daily portion of food.  And then, when you don’t desire it, pushing yourself to read it extensively because you know that it is truly the only lamp we have to light the dark path that lies before our feet.

Be encouraged by this Word from Joshua 1:8-9 (emphasis mine):

 “This book of the law shall not depart out of thy mouth; but thou shalt meditate therein day and night, that thou mayest observe to do according to all that is written therein: for then thou shalt make thy way prosperous, and then thou shalt have good success. Have not I commanded thee? Be strong and of a good courage; be not afraid, neither be thou dismayed: for the LORD thy God is with thee whithersoever thou goest.”

With that - ^^^ - as the promise, how can we but seek God even when we don’t feel like it?
