The original meaning of DISCIPLINE is “to teach.” The ultimate goal of parenting a child, and disciplining a child, is to help the child build life skills and create healthy neurological connections in the brain so that they can gradually make better and better decisions on behalf of themselves. The strength first comes from us, in enduring tough moments so that we can have a future gain. Boundaries are all about discipline and "teaching" others what we will and will not tolerate. Easier said than done. Also, our endurance in one area of our life generalizes to others. If I don't have very good discipline at home, I don't have very good discipline at work, with my nutrition, with my exercise routines, my friendships, and my intimate relationships. This is why martial arts is so beneficial (yup, shameless...see how I threw that in there, though?!)- once you've been hit in the face a few times, everything else in your day seems like a piece of cake! For 2 months, a man lived in the back allyway behind my apartment. Let's call him Gabe (obviously not his real name, as I want to protect his privacy). Gabe was 27, and suffering from schizophrenia, but had no family to help him anymore. Both of his parents had passed away and he had one sibling who he couldn't find. He managed to hold a few jobs, despite his condition, and for a short while he had an LA fitness membership so that he could take showers, but they revoked his membership one day when he went in looking pretty rough.
