I have only ever said “I’m turning into my mother” with a smile. 

I said it when I tried to send my friend to Boston with a few boxes of bean pasta in his luggage. 

I’ve said it curled up with a book and a red sweater, I’ve said it staring at Starry Night, I’ve said it while crowing about thrift store  treasures, and I’ve said it upon insisting friends drink more tea.

I’ve said it after describing rowdy students as “sweet kids, really, you just have to know who they are,” because, of course, it’s true.

I’ve said “I’m turning into my mother,” so many times and never once with sorrow. This truth might be the greatest gift she gave me.
