It was unbelievable, Ara thought. She coudn’t claim to have known the Head Boy well, but that didn’t make this any less tragic. However Ara wasn’t sad – she was angry. Angry that this had happened – a boy had been killed, and as a result they were standing in line to be tested for poison — wasn’t the point of the previous two wars to ensure this generation was safe? People – especially innocent people – weren’t supposed to die anymore. It wasn’t fair and it wasn’t right. The use of poison as a weapon only fueled Ara’s burning flame of injustice. Poison was a cowards tool, Robert didn’t even stand a chance. “I hope they catch the b a s t a r d that did this and that they get fed to the dementors.”

There were a lot of things that Cassius had seen in life, though murder hadn’t been one of them. And it wasn’t like he was above murder, —for some people deserved to die—but he had to say that the ( former, he reminded himself ) Head Boy didn’t deserve his fate.

He couldn’t say that he was sad, but it would be wrong to say that he felt nothing either. It wasn’t nothing that he felt. Sympathy, he supposed, was what it was called. Cassius didn’t know the Head Boy well, but they were in the same year and he knew that there were people in his year who were friends with Farraday. So no, he wasn’t sad, but it would be terribly inconsiderate of him to not feel at least something for these people who the Head Boy had let behind his walls once upon a time.

But judging from Wood’s reaction to Farraday’s passing, Cassius didn’t think that she was one of those people who Farraday had considered a close friend. Not that she didn’t have the right to be angry, of course, but he thought that she didn’t have the right as much as some other people would.

Although in no mood to pick a fight at the very moment, there was a part of him that couldn’t help but pipe up at Wood’s angry words. Regarding her with a curious look on his face, Cassius said, “Were you close to him, Wood?”

“No.”
