Bard stood in the garden below, his bright eyes squinting through morning sunshine to gaze up at her. He’d tied back his unruly brown hair and rolled up the sleeves of his stained shirt to expose sturdy golden forearms, one of which rested on the handle of a rake. When he saw Rapunzel, his face creased into a smile. “Happy birthday, princess.”
Not for the first time, Rapunzel thought back to the day they’d met and wondered if Bard knew how often she dreamed of him being the first to touch her hair when she swung it out the tower’s window. Of him being the one to scale the tower and meet her at the top. The dreams unsettled her more than anything — Bard was only a gardener’s son, after all, so how could he be the one? Still, she dreamed. Still, she wanted.

You trek into the field, your sneakers squeaking through wet overgrown grass. You see Bard sitting on the ground with his back to you. He has on a faded flannel. His arms rest over his propped-up knees as he cranes his neck to gaze at the sky. The sight floods you with nostalgia that almost hurts — then it turns to anger. All Bard has done since he returned from four years of dead silence is show up at your workplace, order you to come to the field, and upturn every careful guard you’ve laid over your heart since the summer you graduated. You feel as if you’re being rebuked or punished. What gives him the right?

The new shirt is soft, and made of a finer fabric than anything you’ve worn before. It smells nice, too – like amber, and the air during a storm after the lightning’s struck, and pine trees. You miss pine trees, sometimes. The mountains surrounding Gondolin were full of them, and all the trees in the Greenwood shed their leaves in the winter. You take a deep breath as you pull the shirt over your head. It’s enormous on you, but with your apron over it, no one will notice anything.
“Is that my shirt?”
You whip around to face the tent flap, an excuse ready on your tongue, but there’s nobody there. Something dawns on you a moment later, and it’s possible that you’ve never liked a thought less in your life. “Over here,” the voice says, and you turn slowly to face the back of the tent.
There, sprawled out on the ground beside the bed rather than on the bed itself, lies Prince Thranduil – Prince Thranduil, who you’ve been looking for, and who certainly got an eyeful of you. Your face goes up in flames, and all you can do is stand there, frozen, while he peers up at you. “That is my shirt,” he decides. Not only did you flash the prince, you stole his clothes. “It suits you.”
