Nikon surprised everyone today by announcing an entirely new type of camera at CES 2016 in Vegas. The Nikon KeyMission 360 is a new wearable, waterproof action camera that can capture 360-degree footage in 4K.
The camera is Nikon’s first attempt at an action camera, and it features a rugged exterior that can handle all the outdoor adventures you can. It’s waterproof down to 100 feet (~30m) and is resistant against dust, shock, and low temperatures. There’s also electronic Vibration Reduction (VR) that helps reduce camera shake when playing video back through Nikon applications.
Inside the camera is an image sensor and lens on opposite sides of the device. When stitched together, the captured imagery form a single, immersive, ultra-high-def 360-degree video (and photo).

he Kormoran from the Austrian company of the same name can speed on (and above) the water as a catamaran, trimaran, monohull and hydrofoil, making it one of the most versatile vessels to ever hit the high seas. A pair of hydraulically actuated hulls allows it to transform before your eyes, even while in motion.
The Kormaran is a shape-shifting boat that provides the benefits of several different vessels The latest Kormaran prototype launched in June The Kormaran offers four styles of boats in one The nose of the central hull folds into a deck when occupants want to anchor for … The Kormaran is a high-tech piece of innovation that lets boaters enjoy the benefits of different types of boats without investing in a small marina of individual models. The key to its multifunctional design is in the kinetic outrigger hulls that quickly change its shape and character.
When drawn completely inward via the electronically activated hydraulic arms, the outrigger hulls fold into the fuselage-like central hull to create a monohull. When deployed partially, they become the dual hulls of a catamaran, with the body set above the water. Deploy them completely, and the body drops to the water’s surface becoming the third hull of what is now a trimaran.
The Kormaran also has a set of fold-out hydrofoils. When it’s in monohull mode, these hydrofoils can be deployed, pushing the body up above the water. This configuration cuts water resistance by up to 80 percent, allowing for a fast, smooth ride that eats less fuel. With the power from its 493-hp triple jet drive, the Kormaran can hits speeds up to 44 mph (70 km/h) and travel up to 108 nmi (200 km) at that top speed. It measures 7 m (23 ft) in length and between 5 and 11.5 ft (1.5 and 3.5 m) in width, from monohull to trimaran configurations. It appears to be configured for two (cozy) rear passengers behind the single driver. A set of rear-hinged wing doors provide ingress.
In addition to its four drive configurations, the Kormaran can serve as a swimming platform when anchored. The nose of the body transforms into a flat teak deck via two fold-out sections. That combines with the fold-out teak panels that fill the space between the outer hulls and central hull, providing ample space for occupants to sunbathe and dive into the water.
Kormaran complements its innovative design with high-end materials. The boat’s main structure is crafted from carbon fiber, one of the elements the company has borrowed from the F1 racing world. The hydraulic arms are a combination of stainless steel and titanium, while the interior is trimmed in leather. The hull and deck surfaces use a black-jointed teak. A lighting system provides for night navigation.
The Kormaran prototype made its world debut in June and will be appearing at the Monaco Yacht Show later this month. The company’s materials don’t list a production date or estimated pricing, but we assume it didn’t invest a reported €10,000,000 (US $13M) without planning to hawk a couple of these to wealthy yacht owners.
To watch the Kormaran transform, check out the 3D section of its website.

spnKiX motorized skates
We’ve been tracking spnKiX motorized skates here at Gizmag since 2010 when they existed as nothing but a concept. Then in 2011, after more than thirty prototypes were rejected, a final version made it onto Kickstarter and the product was successfully funded to the tune of US$120,000. Now spnKiX are available for anyone to buy … but they’re not cheap. spnKiX – motorized skates capable of speeds up…

It’s the Helicat 22. This unique watercraft won’t take off into the air, but it uses a helicopter-influenced catamaran design for a fast, stable ride over choppy water.
The Helicat 22 comes in dual 60-hp and dual 90-hp models The Helicat is available with trailer US-built Helicat models launched in September 2013 Vinyl side doors add some protection from splashing When we first saw the Helicat, we wondered aloud: “Why would anybody put a helicopter-styled body on a boat, outside of trying to get attention?”.
The answer is really that obvious. Washington-based Helicat LLC tells us that the idea behind the boat is combining the fast, stable, lightweight properties of catamaran hulls with the eye-catching heli design. The manufacturer also claims that the boat is particularly good for rough water, with the enclosed cockpit providing the advantage of not collecting water like a traditional catamaran.
The Helicat 22 is equipped with a dual-engine powertrain, and buyers can choose between dual 60-hp and 90-hp engines. The 90-hp engines power a top speed of 43 mph (69 km/h), and the Helicat is made to shine in rough water, shooting through whitecap waves at up to 30 mph (48 km/h).
The Helicat measures just under its 22-ft namesake at 21.5 ft (6.5 m). At 3,300 lb (1,500 kg) with trailer and fuel, it’s designed to be towed by mid-sized cars and SUVs. It’s built at Helicat’s shop from components made at local Pacific Northwest outfits, including fiberglass from Sunbacker. The cabs shown in Helicat photos have tandem or 1+2 seating, but the boat can be designed for up to seven people. Optional vinyl side doors keep occupants from getting wet, and the boat can also be driven without them for “open air feel and thrill like a motorcycle.”
The tail on the back of the Helicat 22 is more than just a nod to the vessel’s helicopter influence; it serves as a wakeboard/waterski tower. Helicat even mentions trying “extreme wake boarding” by leveraging the craft’s superior rough-water speed to ride through waves. Helicat imagines the boat being used as a fishing boat with available swivel seats, a water taxi/tour boat, an offshore scuba platform and more.
The Helicat 22 hit the market last year. The usual base price with 60-hp Mercury engines and trailer is US$74,900, but Helicat is also advertising a demo unit for $64,900 and a prototype for $29,900. Shipping costs about $5,000 in the US and $6,000 in other parts of the world. The boat has been making appearances at major US boat shows since last year.
Those that aren’t enthusiastic about the helicopter design have another option. Helicat says that its craft is a modular platform that could be used to plant an actual sports coupe or convertible body on top. So you could take your old Corvette onto the water, on purpose, without a full-blown amphibious conversion.
The 30 mph quote may not sound especially fast on paper, but when you see the Helicat bouncing like a skipped stone off of choppy water, it certainly looks like a thrill. Have a look in the video below.

Hoverwing flies 5 feet above water
Hoverwing flies 5 feet above water
It’s the “hoverwing”, a hovercraft that flies. New Zealand mechanic Rudy Heeman spent more than 11 years of his spare time (and tens of thousands of dollars) building the hoverwing, a wing-in-ground-effect vehicle that flies on a cushion of pressurized air created between the wing and the water’s surface. Hoverwing can reach an optimum height is 1.5m (4-5ft) above the water and has a current top…

AirMule VTOL
Helicopters may be able to take off and land from places that fixed-wing airplanes can’t, but those whirling exposed rotor blades still keep them out of tight spaces. That’s why Israel’s Tactical Robotics Ltd created the AirMule. It’s an unmanned VTOL (vertical take-off and landing) aircraft, which features lift rotors that are safely enclosed inside its body. Although we first heard about it two…

Head-up displays (HUDs) first appeared on production vehicles way back in the late 1980’s, and add-on HUDs have been around for quite a while too – and not just for cars but also for motorbike helmets. But Taiwan-based company Springteq says its WeGo HUD Navigator is the first product to integrate GPS satellite navigation and a HUD in an all-in-one design. The device projects navigation information onto the windshield to provide a virtual readout out that appears roughly one meter (3.3-feet) in front of the driver. The advantages of HUDs are obvious. They provide drivers with valuable information without having to take their eyes off the road. The WeGo also allows drivers to operate the device without having to take their hands off the wheel thanks to a RF-based wireless remote control that attaches to the steering wheel.
The compact projector unit mounts on the dash and projects a virtual image 4.5-inches in size. The projector boasts a 400 x 240 pixel resolution as well as 13,000 cd/m2 brightness and 500:1 contrast ratio that the company says allows for clear visibility even in direct sunlight. An optical sensor will also automatically adjust brightness based on the ambient light, while the unit’s reflective image display technology eliminates the need to adjust focus. The Wego projector unit is powered via a cable that plugs into the vehicle’s cigarette lighter and its coating and heat-dissipating design means it should be able to withstand both hot summer and cold winter conditions.
Running Microsoft Windows CE the device comes with 2GB of built-in flash memory which is expandable using SD/SDHC memory cards.
Springteq also offers the smaller WeGo mini that boasts similar specs to its bigger brother, but produces a 3.5-inch virtual image from a 320 x 240 resolution projector with 10,000 cd/m2 brightness and 500:1 contrast ratio.

At last, a new airplane seating patent that doesn’t try to squeeze more humans into a smaller space.
Instead, this concept aims to give passengers an even better view of the skies than the pilot’s by seating them on top of the plane, inside a transparent bubble-style canopy.
U.S. aerospace technology company Windspeed says its SkyDeck design can be installed on a variety of aircraft, from private jets to wide-bodied commercial planes.
Passengers access the seats, either via an elevator or staircase. Once inside they can rotate the twin or single seats through 360-degrees, enjoying incredible sky vistas.
“Current inflight entertainment offerings have not changed much over the decades,” Windspeed says. “We wanted to come up with a product that would provide a higher level of entertainment to reduce the boredom of long flights.”

Electric Bike Trefecta – Amazing! Trefecta DRT: The $25K high-tech, military-grade electric super bike
Much like the auto market saw the rise of the supercar, the electric bicycle market is seeing the rise of the super e-bike. The super e-bike is far removed from the average electric bicycle and is essentially a motorcycle hiding inside a lighter, simpler bicycle body. The new Trefecta DRT bike doesn’t even hide it that well as its military-spec aluminum frame is as much motorcycle as bicycle.…
