The transition between capitalism and an automated post-work society does not go smoothly. Historically, the world’s heavy reliance on capitalism to uphold societal constructs of inequalities stemming from race and class kept oppressed groups silent, but providing everyone with an equal baseline of resources allowed for marginalized groups to regain power and assert demands.
We essentially had to recreate a society from scratch, and unrest was present. People who previously yielded power from disparity were unhappy about their losses, and people who were rising into basic human rights were able to take more of what they deserved. People did not lose much, but closing the gap of wealth differences led them to believe they did.
Living in an automated, post-work society also shifted basic interpersonal relationships. In the beginning people became much more isolated, and the need to improve global interpersonal relationships was obvious; not having to work allowed people going through the transition to narrow down their social circles, and people had a hard time finding purpose. Depression rates increased.
With the employment of new community centers based around the idea of fostering human contact and the more gradual shift in mentality to adopt the idea of not working, post-work became much more emotionally and ecologically sustainable system. Fewer daily routine commuters decreased urban congestion and pollution. The idea of “slow socializing” took root, where people were less connected to their fast connecting mobile devices and took longer time to reach out to others in person through travel. Automation allowed, contrary to belief, for people to disconnect from social technologies.
