“Very nice to finally meet you Miss Hatter. It is a large order. I am willing to pay extra for your time and for the last minute change. Let me know how much more it will cost.” Money wasn’t a problem for the man.  Erik watched her face as Sophie looked over the new design. He knew he was asking a lot. He had seen the shop’s work may times as he past by the windows. He did have the option to commission this order from a shop from Paris but he saw an opportunity to help a small business. He wouldn’t have stepped into the shop if he didn’t think they wouldn’t do a good job. “Take all the time you need. I can contact my company about the extension. They should be lenient with the extra days. My word is usually final.” As CEO no would dare say no to him. “Thank you again. You doing this has saved me so much trouble. After this, your hats will be traveling all of the Atlantic. This has be far more easy than me going all the way to Paris shop. From what I remember, all those people are just too pompous for me. Your designs were exactly I would have like to see with my company. ” 

“I’ll have to reassess the order when I get back to the shop. I assure you that I will contact you when I figure out additional costs.” In reality she needed her stepmother to help her figure it all out. Sophie was absolutely clueless when it came to the business side of things. She greatly preferred making the hats over actually running the shop. Yet she was the owner now and that was required of her. If it weren’t for Fannie helping her out the place would be an absolute wreck. “A few days extra should be plenty of time to get it sorted out. You know I’m not too familiar with your company.” She only knew the name really, unsure of what they actually did. “All across the Atlantic, that’s quite a notion. I doubt any of my creations have ever travelled outside the valley so that would be a first. My hats are certainly nowhere near as ones from Paris, I could never compare. I’m happy to hear you took a liking to them.”

Wendy was often wandering the market, but usually she was by herself. It allowed her the freedom to wander the shops at leisure, sample the delicious ripe fruits, and laugh with fellow townsfolk about the latest gossip. But today was not like the others - she had been tasked with watching her dog Nana, and pick up dinner for her family, and could she also take her mother’s mending to the store? So, with hands full, she fumbled through the market with Nana’s leash tugging against her filled bags. Everything seemed manageable - until Nana saw the pigeons. 

“Aaah, Nana!” Wendy groaned, watching her dog escape her grasp and run towards the fountain and birds. The pigeons took off in a flurry, masking the market with their fluttering wings. Wendy ran after her dog, who had eagerly found a fellow market attendee and was trying to grab their groceries. “Oh goodness, I am sorry! She’s usually so much better behaved than this, I promise. Did she ruin any of your groceries? Nana, you must behave better than that, people will think I found you on the streets!”

The market was crowded as Sophie wandered between stalls. The shopping had fallen to her as it seemed no one else had time to. She couldn't really complain, it was enough to pull her away for a little bit. Double checking the list she had been given, it seemed she only needed a few more things. It would have been easy enough if not for the dog that came bounding over to her. Sophie was not particularly good with dogs, or animals in general. She never had pets growing up and simply didn’t know what to do with them. The dog was quite intent on getting a hold of the bag she had held just out of reach, hoping it would become disinterested. There was a sigh of relief as the owner was not too far behind. "It's okay, I must say she took me by surprise. She didn't get a hold of anything, thankfully. So no harm done. She is quite the enthusiastic one isn’t she.”

“Thank you for joining me on this experience,” he said as he was trying his first ice cream since childhood. “Vanilla?” he said before placing the tiny spoon in his mouth and was pleasantly surprised, “Not bad, what do you think of it?”

“Oh… well you're welcome.” This was not quite how she intended to spend her afternoon, something that happened quite frequently with Sophie. She couldn’t remember the last time she had ice cream, preferring warm baked goods over the cold treat. “It’s good. I think vanilla is often overlooked because of how simple it is, which is a shame really.”

Erik was grateful she wasn’t too upset. He wouldn’t have approached her otherwise if it wasn’t important. “No. I believe I spoke to someone else when I went in. A gentleman took my ordered the day I came in.” He stood at the edge of her table before taking a seat across from her. “I’m Erik Barbeau.” He offered a quick handshake to the shop owner. Telling her his name might help his case. His family name some sort of reputation of one of the biggest ship company in the country. “And I assure you that I am way better at handling business than this.” He grinned. Erik was used to talking business in a more professional environment and not in a cafe. He pulled out a letter from his company out of his vest pocket. “Yes. This will be quick. I’m doing a favor for my family. Off all the things they could ask me to do, I was put in charge of getting hats for our company uniform.” He tried to explain. “I made an order with your shop a few days ago and well, I got a call from headquarters about a change.” Erik unfolded the paper showing her the design he had. “Is there any hope to change it?” He had no idea if he had any hope of her willing to help him. 

It made her feel better that she hadn’t just forgotten who he was. She could be so bad at names and faces sometimes, perhaps not the best thing for a business owner. Sophie took his hand. “Sophie Hatter. It's nice to officially meet you.” Once he said his name she realized immediately which commission he was. Hard to forget larger orders like that one, rare that they ever got them. Put the shop in quite a tizzy, making sure everything was perfect and done in a timely fashion. “I’m quite familiar with that order. I must admit I can’t remember the last time we got an order that large.” Changes to the design were never fun, but it could be done. It wasn’t too last minute at least and they weren’t nearly done with them yet. “Let me take a look.” The changes were as drastic as Sophie had feared. The basic style of the hat and color scheme stayed for the most part the same. Seemed as if the most changes were in the embellishments. The kind of design changes she preferred. “It’s a simple enough change, won’t be too much of a problem. It will add on a few days to when it will be done at least.” Sophie was fairly sure she would need to pick up a few extra things material wise. She would have to double check when she got back to the shop.

“I’m good with agreeing with that.“ He offered with a nod of his head. “I figured it was a safe bet, but there was always a chance they stepped out for a moment and planned to return.” As she said though, no one was coming back in and asking for their seat. he glanced at the book in her hand, “Interesting read?” He asked. “You seemed to be very captivated with it.”

“It is better than the alternative I suppose, and they just come back.” What an awkward situation that would be. She hummed in agreement. “I’m enjoying it. I feels like I don’t have any free time these days to do little things, like read. I take what I can get in moments like this.”

Tia was finally able to take a break. The restaurant was slammed and her sue chef had finally arrived. She wanted to stop by the café to recharge a bit on coffee and pastries that weren’t her own. She was stopped in her tracks when she saw a stranger sitting with a book that caught her eye. She had asked her a question but it was clear she hadn’t heard Tia. “No worries hon!” she beamed “I was wondering if that was any good” she said lifting a finger to her book.

Sophie nodded, offering a smile. “It’s one of my favorites. I just keep getting pulled back to it again and again. It’s just as thrilling every time.” There was something rather comforting about going back to a book she had read before. Somehow knowing each twist and turn didn’t ruin it but rather made her look at it differently each time.

lina held out her cup of rose tea for sophie - it was her new favorite thing, and when lina attached to something she wanted to share it with everyone.  “it is! all the best stories just suck you right in and next thing you know it’s three am!” lina laughed with a smile. that had happened to her far too many times, even just painting made her get lost in a story. “the three musketeers? haven’t heard of it, i’ll have to read it!” 

Taking the cup from her friend, Sophie took a sip. Tea was never favorite drink, leading her to be picky about them. "It's quite subtle, but it's good." Certainly not something she'd drink everyday, an occasional to mix things up. "An adventure right in your hands and probably the closest we'll get to an actual adventure." Sophie laughed. "You can always borrow it once I'm done if you'd like."

The cafe was busy and managing to find what appeared to be a free table he had asked of the woman sitting at its neighbor if she knew. There was no response and obiously the book far more interesting and engrossing. He sat down at the table to make it his. After he did, his presence suddenly was noted by the other. “Don’t worry about it. I was just wondering if the table was free but no one’s come to kick me out of the spot, so its mine.”

Sophie felt a little embarrassed as her response was a bit too late. She fought to keep it from showing on her face, it was such a little thing hardly worth making a fuss over. A kind smile graced her face as she spoke. "Ah, right I believe the previous occupant left a few minutes ago. I doubt they are coming back for it."

❝ oh! i was just saying how much i love the book you’re reading. it’s a very beautiful story. ❞ gentle grin falls upon her face, pointing towards the novel the other had in her hand. ❝ i’m sorry for bothering your reading time. ❞ she added, holding a book of her own to the side of her body. head turns to observe the room, noticing how FULL PACKED every table appeared to be in the little café. ❝ is it okay if i could join you? i promise i won’t annoy you. ❞ the brunette releases a chuckle, hoping she wouldn’t be pushed away. even if she did, she understood.

"It's my first time reading it, I'm quite enjoying it so far." Reading was one of the few past times she had. A way to relax and forget about everything else for just a little bit. Something about escaping into another world for a little bit appealed to Sophie. "It's hardly a bother I assure you." A small smile gracing her lips. "I don't mind. It can be so busy here, finding an empty table is almost impossible. I assure you won't annoy me." The other girl seemed sweet, Sophie just couldn't turn her away.

Erik knew when it was the proper time to talk business. When he had orders with any of the shops in town, he made sure to make a meeting with them at a reasonable time. So it was a bit embarrassing for him to approach the hat shop owner while she was minding her free time. “This is a bit embarrassing but you run the hat shop in town?” Erik wouldn’t have bothered the woman if it wasn’t important. But he was still a CEO of his own company and he might have put off some important order for his company’s new uniform. “ Well, yes. I had no intend to bother you but I must ask you about something I commissioned with you.” His love of spending hours out on the river really distracted him from doing the one thing his company asked of him. “It’s something important. And it’s all on my part for waiting this long to speak to you about it.”

To say Sophie was a little disappointed to hear this a business matter was an understatement. It made her wish she was invisible, not the first time she had such a wish. Though she did not let this show, no he was a customer and she was owner now. A good face needed to be put on. “Indeed I am, I don’t believe we have met before.” He certainly wasn’t a regular at the shop, could have come in once or twice, but she certainly didn’t recognize him. “Oh it’s fine really. I’m happy to help with whatever I can.” Sophie offered him a smile, her book forgotten for the moment. “Well if it’s important then perhaps it’s a good thing you ran into me.”

“ – yeah, soph! i asked if you want to try my rose tea!” lina said with a laugh, “what’s that book you’re reading? it’s sure got you captivated.” the blonde raised an eyebrow at the other, “is it another one of those adventure stories? please tell me it’s a romance!”

Sophie felt rather sheepish as she realized who it was. “You know I would love to try it Lina.” A warm smile gracing her lips. “A good story is meant to be captivating isn’t it.” She said, setting the book aside  “The Three Musketeers, so a bit of both really. I think you’d like it.”

Sophie sat tucked away in a corner of the cafe, coffee and book in hand. The noise of the cafe seemed to fade away into the background as she absorbed herself in the book. It was a respite from the mundaneness that was the shop, a moment where she didn’t have to dwell on those things. Suddenly feeling someone's presence snapped her back into reality. “I’m sorry, I wasn’t paying attention. Did you say something?”

⍣ ◦ º ◦ was that [ Myoui Mina ] i just saw? no, my mistake, it was [ Sophie Hatter] though they seem an awful lot like [ Sophie] from [ Howl’s Moving Castle ], don’t they? i heard they’re [ 27 ] and they like [Worn straw hats, flowers pressed between book pages, a half formed dream of something in life] and work at/as [ Hat maker at Hatter’s hats ].

Sophie was the eldest daughter to a hatmaker. It seemed from the beginning her path in life was decided by fate. She is the eldest so she would inherit the responsibilities, it seemed a simple fact to her. Especially after her mothers passing, she stepped up in an effort to help. So at a young age she started learning to make hats. Her father teaching her the trade, happy to see one of his daughters taking an interest. With practice Sophie became quite good at it, slowly she began spending more and more time at the store.

Her social life seemed to fall by the wayside as a result. Perhaps the only saving grace she had was her younger sister Lettie. The younger girl would often drag Sophie out, an attempt to give her a life outside the store. While Sophie went along with it, she quickly realized she wasn't very good at social interactions.Though that never stopped her sister from trying, only wanting the best for the older girl.  

  Eventually her father remarried a woman named Fannie, who adored both girls as much as they adored her. For a moment things were alright kind of okay. Sophie made hats, even if that was necessarily what she wanted to do with her life and her father ran the store with ease. Then her father suddenly passed and the store fell to her. Sophie didn’t even want to run the shop, let know how. Yet it was expected of her so how could she refuse, it didn't even seem like an option to her. It was simply her lot in life and she had to accept that. So she runs the shop, a little unhappily, everyday feeling as if she is growing just a little bit older by doing so.   

Headcannons:

Sophie has always loved flowers, her favorite being chrysanthemums. She collect them and have them pressed. She’s lost count of how many there are adorning her room.

The first hat she ever made was a straw hat that she still has to this day. It’s had to be patched up a few times over the years, but she isn’t keen on parting with it. 

Sophie is rather insecure, it takes time for her to truly open up to people. She finds it hard sometimes to believe people actually want to get to know her and aren’t simply being polite.

Surprisingly Sophie can actually be a little snarky and sarcastic, though it is a rare sight. Her sister is the only who has really seen that side of her and it only ever comes out when she is truly annoyed or angry, which isn’t too often.
