Hello! I'm kinda new to Tumblr and I've seen a lot of people saying spam liking is a bad thing and you get blocked because of it. If it's not a bother, can I know why? Like I'm clueless about this 😭

omg ofc you’re not a bother bubie, welcome to tumblr!! there are numerous reasons why content creators block people who spam like, but two of the main reasons are;

disrespect. likes on tumblr do absolutely nothing. the algorithm built into tumblr does not use likes as a means of promotion, so all a like does is kind of mark it on your blog. this is why you’ll often see creators reminding to reblog and comment! this is because it helps promote their work across the platform but it also gives the chance for someone to give back to a creator. leaving feedback on artwork/stories/gifs/etc is the biggest compliment a creator can receive, and it often helps inspire them to continue. a like does not do this. in my own opinion a like is kind of just a slap in the face.

shadowbanning. not many spam likers know this, but if it happens enough, tumblr will shadowban a creator if people continuously spam like their blog. this is horrible as nothing they post will appear to people organically and there is no natural promotion of their work. i’ve never been shadowbanned myself but many i know have and it’s just a hindrance to go through, and often takes a long time to recover from.

case in point - when you’re new to tumblr i have a few rules to avoid being blocked by creators. make sure you have a pfp and blog title, this will help creators know that you are not a bot. make sure you have posts or reblogs on your page to show you aren’t a silent vierter, which really discourages people. and don’t be afraid to interact with anyone.

whether it’s a keyboard smash, a quick comment of a heart or anything - it will always be appreciated by a creator. i’m sure even if you offered criticism regarding a piece respectfully it would even be taken into account because you’ve chosen to actually interact with them. this is a problem with all of tumblr but it needs to be addressed
