After ushering out yet another confused second year with an armful of books, Kieran set a basket of pin-back buttons on his desk with a sigh and muttered, “Wood owes me s-so much for d-distributing…  H-honestly, there’s something in the water…”

“Something in the water, huh?” Lil popped up beside Kieran with a grin. “What, on account of a straight person’s harder to find around here than a wi-fi connection?” She shrugged. “Not that I’m gonna complain or anything.”

“Yes, this sweater-vest is totally mine,” Odette lied, shoving her hands in the deep pockets.

Lil rolled her eyes. “You know, for a Slytherin, you’re a pretty crap liar,” she said. “The thing doesn’t even fit you, and plus, I think I saw Kieran wearing it. Are you cheating on your boy toy with him?”

“I’ll try not to get too sappy on you. And I guess it does sound a bit weird, but friends are always great. I’m sure knowing ghosts are real would freak out a lot of people. There are those occasional muggles with the strange obsession with the undead and the afterlife, though. Best to stay clear of those, I’m sure.”

“Well, the Ministry’d want us far away from them, I’m sure,” Lil said. “But the thing about them is that other muggles kinda think they’re crazy or exaggerating or something, and there’s so many movies about supernatural stuff that most people would write seeing an actual magical creature off as accidentally wandering onto a movie set.” She sighed. “That’s muggle technology for you. I dunno if it’s a good thing for you lot or a bad thing, but it’s there, all right.”

“I’m sorry.” Nora’s brows knitted. Sometimes there were things where one couldn’t say anything to make it better. Nora hated it, but in this case there was nothing to help. “It must be terribly boring if you were to stay in this castle forever, though. If one is the adventurous type of person, it’d be nice to travel, but I don’t think it’s anything a ghost would really do, would they?”

“Don’t worry about it. Seriously, you get all sappy, and thing’re gonna get weird.” Liliana shrugged. “I guess it is, but hey, dying on the premises gets you a pre-made group of friends. Really weird, but hey, not really in a position to be picky. And... I’m sure some ghosts would like to travel around, but the way the Ministry is... Well, even muggles believe in ghosts, but I don’t think anybody wants them to find out we’re real.”

Jax nodded and shifted uncomfortably back and forth on his heels. “Yeah … yeah I suppose you would know.” He cleared his throat before looking up at the ghost. He couldn’t put his finger on it but he just didn’t know how to feel around …. “I guess that’s one way to look at it and it’s one less year of dealing with being an actual adult. I can see the perks.”

Liliana rolled her eyes at Jaxon’s obvious discomfort. “Clearly somebody never got ghost sensitivity training. I’m offended, I really am.” She chuckled. “I’m kidding. There’s no such thing. Seriously, chill about it. Most of us are cool with it by now. But I guess you’re right. Nobody wants to be an adult right now, I don’t think, not even the adults. And I guess with what’s going on, with all the politics bullcrap and the potion scandal and stuff...” She shrugged. “I don’t blame you lot, really.”

“Believe me, ghosts aren’t the only one in this world adverse to change. Do you think they would have, though? Have another child, I mean.”

“Yeah, I figured. Other people include the Ministry and anyone over sixty years old. And I think they would’ve. I mean, they wanted a kid to make them proud, and a dead kid isn’t making them proud so much as pitiable, so yeah, I think they’d try again.” She shrugged. “It sounds awful, but it is what it is.”

“Not like you can even find where I keep them,” Odette retorted. “Okay. The potion is ready when you are. Only two kisses and sorry, but it’s going to be Owen and I.”

“I can literally walk through walls, and I’ve got all the time in the world. I think I can find things okay,” Lil said with a roll of her eyes. “And that’s fine by me. As much as I hate to admit it, you’re both pretty hot, so it’s not exactly a disappointment. But how does your boyfriend feel about this whole thing?”

I know. I think I’d feel the same way. Actually I know I would. But I guess we’ll have to see if the eighth year will stick around when this year is over. Funny how things work out like that, huh?

I mean, I kinda get how they feel about being stuck here, seeing as I’m... yeah. And I think the ones who are close to the seventh-years will stay. I mean, they get an excuse to stay and screw around with their friends, so why not?

“Hey! I’ve sat through it. I might have nodded off once or twice but I got out with an A in the subject. Surprised? So were my parents.”

“Yeah, once. ‘Cause you had to. That doesn’t count. And seriously? They were actually surprised you passed? They expected you to fail? What on earth was that all about?”

“Merlin I hope so. Otherwise, I’m going to be sitting around the castle with a bunch of romance novels for the year.” Odette tugged on the hem of her sundress. “Have you found anything out? I have your… ah, payment.”

“You’d better watch those, or I might steal them. They don’t keep anything like that in the library here.” She nodded. “I think I’ve got something. Just gimme a few more days to check up on it. I don’t want to give you bunk information.”

I think there’s a few students that would be in agreement with you. About the schooling not the umm … not the other thing.

I can’t say I’d be particularly pleased with having to stay in the castle for an extra year if I was in their shoes. But some of them seem to be handling it better than others. I’ve seen a few champing at the bit to get the heck out of here.”

Nora chuckled. “Yeah, I’ve been at the wet end of a hose plenty of times myself. You should go and see them. Even if you don’t plan on staying there, which I’m sure you could, if they don’t mind having a ghost in their house. I can’t say I know how they’d feel, but I’d be overjoyed to see my daughter again if I had one.” 

Liliana shrugged. “Maybe when this whole potion-spraying mess gets fixed. I don’t know if it works on ghosts, but you know, none of us are exactly itching to try. Plus... I don’t know. It sounds selfish, but I just don’t want to go there and find out they’ve had another wonder child to replace me. They were young enough to have another, just barely.” She forced a smile. “But that’s the curse of ghosts, right? We never want anything to change.”

“Sorry to inform you that I’ve never had much of an in-school social life. I didn’t get invited to many parties. Also, I attended Beauxbatons, not Hogwarts. But you know in France, adolescence without a few drinks is hardly a proper adolescence at all. I’ll leave the rest to your imagination.”

“Beauxbatons, huh? What’s it like there? I’m envisioning a much better interior design than portraits who follow you around, which is a little creepy, honestly. And I have to say, I haven’t got much of an imagination for it. I never did that stuff while I had the chance. Little bit of a goody two-shoes. Wouldn’t have lasted a day with the kids going here now.”

“Nope. Like you would? I sat through it once, and once was way, way more than enough.”

“Oh, wow, I hope the eighth years have new classes this term. Have you heard anything about it? Nothing against the old curriculum, but it gets boring after a decade or so.”

“It’s what I do, at least. I prefer not to get caught up in things like that. Though I do have to say I don’t approve of under-aged drinking.”

Liliana grinned. “Oh, come on, you can’t tell me you never did anything crazy when you were a student here. It seems like everybody here’s getting up to something wild when they think nobody’s watching.”
