PROLOGUEÂ
Like plunging beneath the surface of water and then, abruptly, breaking through to the air aboveâyour body jolted as if awakening in a new world altogether. You drew in a long breath, your eyes fluttering open to reveal the ceiling, both familiar yet unfamiliar in its greeting. Swiftly, you surveyed your surroundings, noting with growing recognition the confines of your old room within the De Roma estate. The estate!Â
You were not in the palace of Caelum, but in the estate of House De Roma. A surge of realization flooded through you as you dashed towards the nearest mirror, confronting your reflection with wide, startled eyes.Â
No... could it be... that you have returned to your body, ten years prior?!
In the mirror, the reflection staring back at you was not that of the notorious wife of the tyrant Emperor Satoru, but of a 20-year-old maiden, the eldest daughter of Duke de Roma, with fuller cheeks and a more youthful appearance. You could not shake the feeling of disbelief, wondering if this was all just a dream, so you reached out to touch your arms and felt the flesh beneath your fingers, trying to convince yourself that this was an unexpected reality.
Oh, you were back. You found yourself returned to your former self, a decade younger, but now armed with the knowledge of your past life's actions and their consequences. Alongside this newfound understanding, the gift of clairvoyance had also been bestowed upon you.
And for what? Why had the heavens above returned you to your body? Was it for revenge, a second chance, or perhaps punishment?
Suddenly, a loud, deafening sound pierced your ears, and a blinding white light enveloped your vision. Your body became as still as a statue, and it felt as though your soul was transported to a fourth dimension where divine intervention seemed a lot more plausible to exist.
As your soul hovered in the liminal space between life and death, you found yourself standing before a figure cloaked in billowing robes, her presence commanding and her gaze piercing. This figure was Fortuna, the ancient Caelan goddess of fortune and fate, her visage austere and unforgiving.
âAre you aware of the sins that stain your soul?âÂ
âHave you felt the weight of your transgressions, the consequences of your actions that have wrought suffering upon your people and brought ruin to your empire?â
Her voice echoed through the realm with the divine judgment that weighed upon your conscience, while her gaze penetrated to the core of your being and demanded honesty and accountability in the face of your past misdeeds.
âWill you atone for your sins?âÂ
âWill you seize this opportunity for redemption, or will you squander it in self-pity and remorse?â
As you stood in the presence of the ancient goddess, grappling with the heaviness of your sins and the daunting task ahead, a brilliant light had all of a sudden illuminated the space around you. From the heart of this radiant glow emerged the figure of Archangel Raphael, his presence heralded by a chorus of angelical voices and the stirring of celestial winds.
Clad in robes that seemed to shimmer with the intensity of celestial light, Archangel Raphael's presence commanded attention, his wings unfurled behind him in a display of resolute authority. If Goddess Fortuna was intimidating, the archangel was fearsome all the more. His gaze, intense and penetrating, swept over you with a gravity that left no room for evasion or deceit.
âEmpress of Caelum,â he spoke, his tone firm and unyielding, and his voice carrying a billion years of heavenly existence, âYou stand accused of grievous sins, crimes that have shaken the very foundations of your empire and brought suffering upon your people.â
There was no trace of softness in Archangel Raphael's demeanor, no room for mercy in the face of wrongdoing. His presence was a testament to the uncompromising nature of divine justice, his strictness a reflection of the solemn duty entrusted to him as an Archangel of the Almighty. This, no doubt, was the face of a true and formidable executor of justice.
And you, the subject, had angered the divine beings that guarded the Caelan Empire, so much so that God himself sent the goddess of the land and one of his archangels to mitigate your rightful punishment.
âBy the decree of the Almighty, you are granted a second chance to amend your sins and redeem your soul. You shall return to the mortal realm, to live your life anew and correct the sins that have stained your soul.â
âShould you fail to rectify your past transgressions, should you stray from the path of righteousness and succumb once more to the temptations of darkness, know that the consequences shall be severe and eternal.â
âFor those who squander the gift of divine mercy shall be cast into the deepest depths of hell, where they shall endure a punishment of unending torment and suffering.â
In the presence of Archangel Raphael and Goddess Fortunaâs equally stern gazes, you were keenly aware of the magnitude of your transgressions and the severity of the judgment that awaited you. But even as you trembled beneath the weight of their scrutiny, you knew that their presence also offered you the opportunity for redemption, with your only task to prove yourself worthy of divine mercy.
Indeed, it was by your very hands that hundreds and thousands of Christian souls shed their blood. Innocent lives, both young and old, were cruelly taken at your command. The citizens of Caelum who fell sick from the spread of the plague. The esteemed Caelan advisors of your husbandâs primogenitors, skinned alive and speared in pikes by the Tiber River. The wrongly accused maid who suffered the indignity of serving your husband, paraded unclothed through the streets and subjected to the brutality of the pear of anguish. The gallant and dignified knight, tortured mentally and physically in the atrocious dungeon. Now, you find yourself thrust back into the horrors of your former life ten years hence. A life of a noble lady who ought not to be blinded by her destructive love for the empireâs crown prince.Â
Yet, could you truly navigate this life without ascending to the position as his empress?
As you tried to commune with the divine beings afore you, a haze in your vision transported you away from the heavenly space, realizing that you were already drawn back into the reality of your chamber, inhabiting the youthful frame of a twenty-year-old daughter of a duke. You found yourself too astonished to move, too shaken to speak, and too afraid to take any action in this new lease of life blessed upon you. At that very moment, your state of reverie was disrupted at the arrival of your maid, who entered your chamber in a humble servant garb.
Milena. The maid whose life was cut short by your hand in your past existence due to petty thievery. âMy lady,â she spoke with a hint of respect and urgency, unaware of the ill-fate you had given her in your past life, âA visitor has arrived at the gates and requests an audience with you. Shall I show them in?âÂ
Too soon? Need it truly be so soon to engage with the people from your past life immediately after awakening to your old, yet younger body? Gazing upon your maid through the mirror, you asked, âWho is that intruder you speak of?âÂ
She bowed her head, her stance shifting into one of apologetic deference. The way she firmly stood by your door was a message to you that the intruder was not someone you could easily reject the presence of.
âThe visitor is His Highness, Crown Prince Satoru.âÂ

âWhy canât you do anything right?â
Toji should have noticed, he laments as he takes a sip of his cognac. He should have sensed that something was wrong sooner, maybe that way, he wouldnât be begging to borrow some more time to make things right. Your fingers were trembling that day â the first time you ever ruined his morning coffee â your hands shaking uncontrollably as you washed the mug with a sorrowful look on your face, your eyes glossy with the tears you were desperately trying to hold back.
He shouldnât have been so harsh, he realizes that now. Breakfast had been burnt to a crisp and ruined, sure, but nothing could compare to how he constantly ruins the one beautiful thing that has ever happened to him, who haphazardly spilled their smoothie on him when they first bumped into each other in Shinjuku just after he finally cashed in enough money with Shiu to get his laundry done.
Toji, whose senses have now been honed to pick up on the slightest of your sluggish movements and your pained and suppressed hisses, hears the bedsheets rustling and he instantly gets up before you could even force yourself out of bed. âHey, hey, easy now.â He catches you before you could fall backwards onto the mattress, your skin appears cold and clammy, your thinning muscles stiff as a board â you must be having one of your episodes again. âWhat do you need?â he asks, his voice heartbreakingly gentle for the first time in months.
âWater.â
Your husband nods, swinging his feet over the edge of the bed, hurriedly making his way to the dining table which was now kept in your bedroom so you arenât forced to move around too much. The sound of water splashing into the glass fills the air and you feel another stabbing pain coarse through your joints.
Toji gingerly brings the glass of water to your lips and you sighed, an exasperated yet amused smile on your face. âI can do it, babe. Donât worry.â Why did that sound like you were trying to convince not just Toji but yourself? You bring your bony hands to grip the glass and it takes everything out of your husband not to break into a fit of sobs when he sees your hand violently shaking with effort just to keep the glass steady.
His larger hands close around your defeated one. âI-IâŠI can do it, I did it yesterday. Y-you saw me.â
âShhh, I know, itâs okay.â
You bite your lip to distract yourself from the anguish of realizing the truth behind the doctorâs words. Everything you feared was finally becoming your and Tojiâs bleak reality.
âItâll be a painful decline.â
Funny how youâre the one fighting to extend your life but Toji feels like heâs already gone ahead and passed on. Just a few minutes earlier, you were overjoyed to see him again. You didnât think heâd see your text thinking that his new girlfriend must have asked him to block your number, and you most certainly didnât expect him to arrive when you asked for him via a brief phone call to drive you to the hospital for your monthly checkup since he took the car with him when you separated. He made up a bullshit excuse when Yuko asked where he was going in such a hurry and he makes it to your old shared apartment to see you sitting on the driveway looking thinner and sicklier than ever â your eyes were sunken, and your cheeks were hollow.
Yet in spite of that, you gave him the brightest of smiles, waving shyly to him as he steps out of the driverâs seat. âHappy morning!â you smiled, greeting him with your signature good morning tagline which he used to happily wake up to everyday. There wasnât a scintilla of resentfulness in your demeanor, and you genuinely looked so happy to see him for the first time since he moved out.
âHow long?â Toji asked the doctor, his heart twisted into knots when he hears you happily humming in the MRI room as you put your clothes back on, oblivious to the solemn mood in the other room.
âA year, maybe even less.â
âAndâŠyouâre saying itâs best if she simplyâŠdoesnât get the treatment?â
The doctor sighs heavily. Sheâs seen many cases like this before, but none as utterly hopeless as yours. Even if you did start the treatment, the lesions in your spinal cord have already entered the most severe stage, you were already exhibiting signs of autonomic nervous system distress â the tremors, the uncontrollable stuttering of your words, the growing loss of balance â and as if that wasnât enough, the doctor also discovers that you were suffering from primary osteosarcoma.
There was no way to cure you now that itâs too late.
âI suggest we just focus on keeping her comfortable. The only thing left for us to do now is to bring her home. Iâm so sorry.â
âYouâre so fucking embarrassing. I canât bring you anywhere.â
By some miracle, you and Toji went out one night around four months before the divorce proceedings. He went home that day, exhausted beyond all belief from another mission, and he was in a good mood. Yuko was out working late tonight, so, he decides to take you out to your and his favorite izakaya for some yakitori.
Some time during the night, after downing three full bottles of sake together, you excuse yourself to use the restroom. âIâll be right back,â you told Toji, tipsily kissing him on the cheek as you hop off the bar stool in the direction of the womenâs room.
You couldnât tell if you were staggering from the copious amounts of alcohol you ingested, but your legs were beginning to feel heavy, and for some ominous reason, you were slowly losing all sensation in your left leg. You try to hold onto one of the izakayaâs shĆji panel decor piece to regain your balance, but it was a futile effort in the end. Your knees suddenly buckle, and a sickening crack tears through your fibula as you fall to the ground.
âAre you alright?!â
Toji picks up on the commotion instantly and he sees the izakaya patrons crowding around the hallway leading to the restroom. He quickly makes his way over and a look of disgust appears on his features when he sees you crumpled on the ground and the mortifying sight of you having relieved yourself on the floor, tears of embarrassment staining your cheeks at the thought of your body suddenly malfunctioning like this.
Muttering out an apology for his invalid wife, he picks you up, growing increasingly infuriated with you when one izakaya employee offers him a damp cloth to dry out your urine with. He doesnât speak to you on the way home even as you apologize while heâs loading you into the car, grimacing when the leather seat gets wet. âToji, I-Iâm sorry, I donât know what happenedââ
ââSave it.â
What he should have said was: âItâs alright.â or better yet, âI still love you.â
At present, Toji decides on a whim to take you to Yokohamaâs famed bayside today. Itâs only a two hour drive from your place in Tokyo and Toji figures you must miss going on road trips by now with you cooped up at home all the time. âToji, are you sure this is a good idea?â you murmured nervously as the car pulls to a stop in the parkâs parking lot. What happens if you canât control yourself again? There doesnât look to be a lot of public restrooms nearby.
Toji plants a reassuring kiss to your nose. âBabe, you know what the doctor said, some time outdoors can do wonders for your health. Besides, didnât you always love the coast?â He brings your hand to his scarred lips, rubbing his thumb against the soft skin before stepping out of the car to retrieve your wheelchair from the trunk.
âI know but what if I have another accident?â you said worriedly, rolling down the car windows so he could hear you. âWhat if I embarrass you again?â
âThereâs nothing embarrassing about you.â
Youâve lost all control of your lower extremities three months ago, rendering you unable to walk and feel when you need to relieve yourself. Toji struggles with the wheelchair for a bit and a flash of sadness fills your heart when you see him take a few deep breaths to calm himself down. He wasnât angry, he was devastated. He looks wistfully at the boardwalk, a distant gaze trained on the sea. He remembers when you used to walk down this very lane, his hand protectively around your waist as you happily take selfies. He could still hear your fond giggles the last time the two of you went here.
âWhy donât you ever smile when I take pictures of you?â
Toji shoos away a pigeon from stealing a bite of his ice cream sandwich. He feigns an unamused look when you try to take another picture of him on your phone.
âCome on, Iâve been trying to get a shot of you all day! You still have to take pictures of me so I can post it on my Instagram feed!â
Your ever moody husband pinches off a small piece of bread and feeds it to the nosy pigeon. âYou and your precious feed,â he bemoans jokingly.
âPlease? Just one picture!â you playfully nudged him. Truthfully, you just wanted to see him smile for once, a genuine one and not one of those lopsided smirks he usually gives you when heâs teasing you. âPlease?â you pout knowing he can never say no to that adorable face you make when you really want him to do something or worse, buy something for you.
Sighing, he turns to look at your phoneâs camera lens and you blush when a smile slowly illuminates his usually stoic face. Your thumb hovers over the stop recording function, not realizing youâre taking a video, but you canât seem to press it. âWhatâs taking so long?â he holds the smile like heâs some cartoon character and you snap out of it.
âOh shoot, itâs a video!â you laughed, and you begin to run down the boardwalk, eagerly getting away from Toji who demands that you delete it immediately. Of course, youâre no match for his borderline inhuman speed attributed to his athletic physique and he catches you by the waist, playfully swinging you over his shoulder like youâre a sack of potatoes.
Toji realizes now he should have indulged you more over the course of your relationship and subsequent marriage. Had he known that you wonât even make it to your third wedding anniversary, he would have allowed you to take as many pictures and videos of him as youâd like, heâd swallow his pride and heâd give you the brightest of smiles so you could happily post him on your social media accounts with a heartwarming caption about him being your âsmiley hubbyâ.
More than that though, he should have taken more photos of you, mostly stolen candid shots, of course. You canât catch him being all soft on you now. He still has a reputation to live up to after all.
He opens the passenger seatâs door and he effortlessly gathers you into his arms, being extra careful with your fragile form as he sits you down on the wheelchair. He opens the backseat and he pulls out two different colored blankets, one sea-foam green and the other, rose pink. âTake your pick,â he smiles at you and you chuckled softly, pointing to the rose pink one. He happily covers your legs with it to keep you warm, stroking your cheek when you whisper a bashful âthank youâ.
Suddenly, the wind picks up and your hair-clip thatâs holding your locks in a low bun comes loose, and your head turns in the direction of where it flew off to. Toji is quick to take out his phone and he snaps a quick burst shot of you, your hair blowing in the wind, under the coastal spring weather. You turn to look at him and your face falls when you see him burying his phone in his pocket. Since you fell ill, youâve become insecure of your appearance, banning your husband from taking pictures and videos of you altogether. âToji, I thought I said no pictures.â
âI donât know what youâre talking about.â
The next day, you serendipitously find your photo on your Instagram handle with the caption: â(Y/N) â Yokohama, Spring, 2024â and when you swipe left, another picture, well to be more accurate, a screenshot of the video clip you accidentally took of him captioned: âToji â Yokohama, Summer, 2022â.
âYou donât have to stick around for me. Please just go, Iâm sure Yuko must be looking for you right now.â
Yuko, his new fiancĂ©, had been blowing up his phone the entire day with texts demanding to know where he is and if heâs going to make it to their date that night. Itâs 7 PM now, and Toji still hasnât shown up to confirm their restaurant reservations. The damn witch will surely cuss him out when they see each other again, but for some reason, even if he tries, he simply cannot bring himself to give a flying fuck. Your immunologist and oncologist stepped out for a bit to allow you two a brief moment of privacy which had now stretched to an expanse of five hours since your results came in.
The air in the room is thick and heavy, not a single sound can be heardâŠor so you thought. Inside, underneath this tough exterior he was projecting, Toji is throwing a fit, screaming at the sky like those broken men in those shitty Netflix romance tragedies he used to callously make fun of.
âWhy didnât you call me sooner?â
Tojiâs bites his cheek trying to keep a lid on his emotions. He knows the answer. He just wants to hear you say it out loud. You hated him. You wanted nothing to do with him after he cheated on you with some girl he met at a bar in uptown Shibuya. âShit,â he whispers harshly, crumpling the medical abstract in his hands. âWhy didnât you tell me you were feeling off? Was it because you hated me? Is that it? You didnât think Iâd worry about you?â
You screwed your eyes shut, shaking your head. You didnât hate him, not even when you have every reason to. He abandoned you, left you to waste away and to die and yet, even now, you canât bring yourself to resent him for the simple reason that he is the literal love of your life, the reason behind your smiles, your happy mornings and passionate midnight hours. âI thought I was fine, maybe just fatigued or something.â
âDonât lie. You knew something was going on and that something in your body was seriously fucked up.â
âAnd we werenât married anymore so, I didnât think it was right to tell youâŠI wanted to though, but I didnât want to intrude on you and Yuko,â you said meekly. Even in your greatest hour of need, you were still thinking of him, putting him first even when he doesnât deserve it. âI-IâŠI donât hate you enough to worry you, to make you feel that you could have done something to prevent this. Because Iâm telling you right now, regardless if you left or stayed, I was bound to get sick anyway. You couldnât have done anything to change that.â
âBut I could have been there.â He says this as if he wants to shake this noble, self-sacrificing bullshit attitude out of your system. âIâm your husband. I should have been there.â
You flash him a heartbroken smile at his little slip-up, so, even now, he was still referring to himself as your husband, not your ex-husband. âTo see me waste away? Babe, I donât want you to see that.â
You begin to feel tears streaming down your face, the emotions you were experiencing now flowing like a free river after an entire dam is destroyed. Toji watches you unravel before his eyes and his bottom lip begins to tremble. What has he done? Dear god, what has he done to his poor, poor wife?
âI want you to remember me healthy, I want you to remember me as myself not thisâŠsickly pitiful woman youâre unlucky to call your ex-wifeâŠbesides, after all this, Iâll only be a dream.â A mere passing second in his life. âAnd believe me, my life wasnât so bad.â
He loses it at that.
âJust stop this, Y/N! Stop acting like youâre not scared shitless of dying, like youâre not gonna have regrets once all this is over! Stop pretending that things are gonna be alright one day because it wonât! Not when Iâm now being forced to accept that you wonât get better, not when Iâve wasted so much time putting you through hell and back instead of taking care of you like a proper husband should, and certainly not when Iâm suddenly supposed to learn to say goodbye and to live without you! Because fuck that, Y/N!â
You are left speechless at that.
Toji was never one to lose his cool, even during your worst arguments, he may slide a few snarky remarks here and there but Toji FushiguroâŠnever yells, and he doesnât sob either.
You hesitantly stand up and walk over to him, crouching down in front of him as he covers his tear-stained eyes with his right hand while the other is crumpled around your medical abstract. Taking his left hand, you gently remove the medical abstract from his grip, and for the first time in so many months, you feel one anotherâs warm skin against each other. You press your forehead to his hand as you wept with him.
âIâm sorry.â
âI donât want you to be a dream. I want you to be real.â
âCanât you be bothered to clean up in here?!â
You wake up from your nap, youâve been battling muscle and joint pain the entire day, the slightest of movement causing you to double over in agony and because of that, you werenât able to clean the apartment today. You slowly get up from the couch, being extra cautious not to make any sudden movements. âWell?â Toji presses, his lips curled into a scowl.
âIâm sorry, I was feeling a little tired,â you sighed heavily, picking up a broom to sweep the living room floor despite the excruciating pain you were in. Toji rolls his eyes, handing you a Manila envelope. âWhatâs this?â you asked softly, peering inside.
âDivorce papers,â he shrugs nonchalantly. Everything stops, even the very rise and fall of your chest halts into an uneasy stasis. âI already signed them. I just need your signature then, Iâll move out by tomorrow.â
You must be dreaming. Thatâs the only logical explanation to all this. Youâre asleep, in a deep REM sleep, utterly oblivious to the world. This wasnât happening. But you could feel the rough surface of the brown envelope, and you could still feel the agonizing stabs of white hot pain throughout your body. Glancing at Toji, you see him texting someone with an eager look on his face that screams: âIâm free.â.
Instantly, it dawns on you.
âWill she make you happy?â you asked, putting down the broom to look around for a pen but Toji pulls one he stole from the law firm office out of his pocket.
âShe will,â he answers simply.
And you are indeed grateful that he is completely upfront about finding another while the two of you are married. It would have hurt much more, you silently remind yourself, if he had just upped and left without another word leaving you to wonder what went wrong between the two of you. This was Tojiâs final act of mercy in your marriage, and heâs not opposed to honesty and truthfulness either. Not once did he try to change his phoneâs lock-screen passcode, nor did he try to conceal the identity of the woman who was texting him every night while you slept fitfully next to him. It was almost as if he wanted you to find out, like he wanted you to know so you could back off yourself.
But if thereâs one thing Toji loves about you, itâs your unending faithfulness to your promises, to your marriage vows, and your willingness to endure anything he threw at you. You never checked his phone, you never brought up his affair, you never got angry with him. You just kept silent, simply content with giving and givingâŠand giving while he milked you dry by taking, and taking and taking, tearing you to pieces bit by bit without hearing a single complaint fall from your lips.
You were a devoted wife, through and through.
And it bored the hell out of him, on top of your recent mishaps, he was done. Done with everything, and done with you.
âOkay.â
Tomorrow morning, he takes everything he owns with him and promptly proposes to the girl heâs been seeing for the past year. Two weeks later, your divorce is received by the Tokyo Family Court and is summarily approved and finalized. From that moment on, you and Toji went on your separate ways never to look back, you were each otherâs yesterdays, and the love that existed between the two of you was nullified in favor of acquaintanceshipâŠor so you thought.
âY/N, Iâm home!â Toji calls into the house as he comes back from your neighborhoodâs pharmacy. You look up from the book you were reading, smiling ever so slightly at your husband who seemed to have a wonderful sparkle in his eyes. âHey, kid,â he kisses the top of your head when he reaches your wheelchair.
âYou seem happy,â you remarked positively.
âWell, for one, they replenished their stocks today and I managed to get you your steroids and painkillers so youâll be able to sleep easy tonight,â Toji smiles, taking out the items from the pharmacyâs paper bag. âAnd I got you this neat memory foam cushion for your wheelchair.â He fluffs it up as a form of demonstration before placing it behind your back.
When he sees you smile, a sense of relief washes over Toji. You reach towards him, and he pulls you into an embrace. âThank you,â you said, pure sincerity dripping from your voice. âFor everything you do.â
âAnything for you.â He suddenly moves back and reaches into the tote bag you lended him. âOh, and wait, before I forget, I have another surprise.â
You laughed airily. âAnother surprise? Now, youâre just spoiling me!â
He pulls out a piece of paper from the tote bag and he places it in your hands as your eyes quickly scan over the document. Your breath hitches in your throat when you realize what it is. Did Toji reallyâ? You couldnât believe it. âA marriage pre-registration,â you said in awe. You read it again just in case to make sure that this wasnât a figment of your sick bodyâs imagination, that this was real, that Toji genuinely wants to make everything right again. Your fingers skim over your typewritten names. âIt has our namesâŠweâre reallyââ You canât even finish your sentence without bursting into happy tears. âAre weâ?â
Toji nods, gazing into your eyes, and as emerald and (E/C) clash for what seems to be an eternity lost in one another, he plants a kiss to your temple, coming up to embrace you from behind, resting his chin on your shoulder.
âWe are. The Tokyo Family Court, as far as I know, will approve our remarriage once we file this. So, you have to get stronger, okay?â Heâs begging you at this point, despite your rapidly deteriorating condition. âStrong enough to see me fix everything. Strong enough to be there on our second wedding, strong enough to say our vows again.â
Your hand comes up to stroke his cheek from behind, and he nuzzles into your neck at your tender touch.
âI will. I promise.â
But you never really get to say your vows. Not comprehensibly anyway.
âBabe, can you say that again?â
Toji crouches by your bedside as you look at him apologetically. You were causing him trouble and pain again which is the last thing that you want to give him especially whenâs fought and worked so hard to care for you, to keep prolonging this borrowed time youâre on. âTo-ji. Toji.â You gaze at him apprehensibly, not really believing you can do it without crumbling.
âCome on, babe, you can do it. Say my name, pleaseâŠToji. Iâm Toji.â
âToooji-â you slurred sadly. At this point, your Multiple Sclerosis has reached its end stage and has takenâŠeverything from you: your ability to walk, your ability to control your muscle spasms and other bodily functionsâŠand now, coupled with an unexpected stroke, your ability to speak. And you and Toji know that time is almost up, with you having come to accept it, while your husband still held onto hope. Your fingers gently graze over his face as best as your spasms and tremors allow you, starting from his forehead to his eyes, his nose, his cheek and finally, his lips, as if youâre memorizing it one last time. âLo-ove you-â
Toji sniffles, and your fingers instinctively catch his warm tears. âI love you,â he whispers brokenly. âI do. I love you.â
You feel yourself tearing up as youâre forced to watch your beloved cry. And the worst part? You canât do a thing about it. âD-oonât c-cryââm okaay. Promi-miiseâŠeâeveryything âill be okaaay.â
âY-yeah,â he chuckles, trying to crack a joke even as hope dwindles. âYouâve been nothing but a fucking champ this entire time, you know? Iâm so proud of you. SoâŠsoâŠproud that youâre still here.â He strokes your hair as you tread between the realms of the conscious and the unconscious. âDo you wanna go out today? The weatherâs shit though. Youâll probably catch your death out there.â At the mention of the word âdeathâ, Toji stops, falling into an uncomfortable silence.
You smile weakly at him. âTiireddââ
âYouâre no fun,â Toji gently flicks your nose and you scrunch it up in displeasure. âSorry,â he chuckles, holding back an entire waterfall of tears. He knows itâs today. It has to be. You woke up today without your usual âhappy morningâ greeting, and you refused to drink anything, much less eat anything. âYou tired? Any pain?â
You shake your head. Youâre as comfortable as you can be for the first time in months. Hospice nurses say humans are built to live the same way they are built to die, no person in this world has ever had the uncanny privilege of being able to look up âHow to die?â on a quick Google search and actually find a Wikihow on the morbid subject matter, nor is there anyone else who can teach another how itâs done. Itâs just something humans know how to do without a manual, deeply ingrained in the very fabric of human existence is the fear of death, the fear of what comes after, the fear of a nothingness that could follow after living such a vibrant life. Your life was short, barely spanning thirty years, but you lived well: you fell in love, you got hurt, but you fell together again. Now it all has to come to an end, Toji will just have to take care of the rest.
And you werenât scared.
Or at least you canât look scared, if you were to be more accurate, you have to look strong and ready to accept the cards youâve been dealt with for Tojiâs sake. When he feels your hand start to slacken, Toji intakes a sharp, shaky breath of sheer panic. âNot yet, Y/N. Please. Not yet.â
He climbs into bed with you, bringing you closer to this desperate man you call yours. There was no getting better anymore, there was no miracle he could hang onto, no deity he could beg for death to spare you, no pill bottle he could pray to. He knew that from the start. But what he witnessed these past months, youâve been the braver one between the two of you, you knew how to make the most of the rhythm this cruel world gave you and you graciously took him along to dance to the last song of the evening with you.
âThereâs still hope. Just keep your eyes open. Just keep them open.â He presses his lips to your forehead, his delusion getting the better of him. âWeâll just keep tryingâŠyou canât leave. You have to stay. You have to.â
âThaank yoouââ you softly told your Toji, your voice shrinking in decibels as you become a little drowsy, sinking into the warmth of the requiem of a life well spent.
Toji listens to you, his lips pursed, intent on making this final act of love â a love that is strong enough to say goodbye â a memorable one. And should the afterlife exist, he wishes to send you off with a smile, with the reassurance that heâll be alright.
âToji.â
âI want you to be real. And I donât care if weâll live on borrowed time. Another extra second with youâŠis enough to last me my entire lifetime.â
Hi, Tumblr. Itâs Tumblr. Weâre working on some things that we want to share with you.Â
AI companies are acquiring content across the internet for a variety of purposes in all sorts of ways. There are currently very few regulations giving individuals control over how their content is used by AI platforms. Proposed regulations around the world, like the European Unionâs AI Act, would give individuals more control over whether and how their content is utilized by this emerging technology. We support this right regardless of geographic location, so weâre releasing a toggle to opt out of sharing content from your public blogs with third parties, including AI platforms that use this content for model training. Weâre also working with partners to ensure you have as much control as possible regarding what content is used.
Here are the important details:
We already discourage AI crawlers from gathering content from Tumblr and will continue to do so, save for those with which we partner.Â
We want to represent all of you on Tumblr and ensure that protections are in place for how your content is used. We are committed to making sure our partners respect those decisions.
To opt out of sharing your public blogsâ content with third parties, visit each of your public blogsâ blog settings via the web interface and toggle on the âPrevent third-party sharingâ option.Â
For instructions on how to opt out using the latest version of the app, please visit this Help Center doc.Â
Please note: If youâve already chosen to discourage search crawling of your blog in your settings, weâve automatically enabled the âPrevent third-party sharingâ option.
If you have concerns, please read through the Help Center doc linked above and contact us via Support if you still have questions.
Wow, fuck off with that shit. Without us, you wouldn't HAVE fucking content. This should be AUTOMATICALLY opted out. Bunch of bullshit.
The fact too that this site is owned by Automatic who owns WORDPRESS (yes THAT wordpress) is pretty damn laughable. Congrats, this is a sure fine way to tell people to fuck off out of here for good.
Here's where it is in settings menu.

He doesnât want to wake up.
Not right now, when everything feels so real, so painfully tangible that he could make out her voice, her gentle breath, her plumose touch grazing his flesh as she leans in. âSatoru?â The woman in his dream whispers his name, and light seems to burst forth from that sound alone. Itâs her; she iswas here, Satoru could almost touch her if he searched hard enough. If he imagined her face with just a little more effort, maybe sheâd become real and not a figment of his guilt-ridden imagination. âSatoru, wake up. We canât stay.â
Iâve missed you, Iâve missed who I could be when Iâm with you.
Suddenly, he is brought back to light-hearted days when he used to sit underneath the imperial palaceâs cypress, his fingers absentmindedly flipping through a book he found in the imperial archives while the love of his life sits beside him. His orbs gaze up at the chemtrails that paint the canvas of the turquoise summer sky.
He doesnât want this dream to end. Shaking his head, he refuses her request the same way he did back then.
How cruel could she be to ask him to leave her again? Heâs left her once, he wasnât about to do it again. He hasnât even begged for her forgiveness yet and now, she was telling him to wake up from this fantasy world his troubled mind created and to confront reality.
Donât make me go, he begs her. Werenât they happy here being together after being forced apart by those around them? Why would she want to go another minute without him being by her side? Did she still resent him? Stupid question, Satoru thought bitterly. Of course she does, after everything heâs put her through-
Suddenly, the hand that was reaching for her falls slack against his side. He doesnât deserve her forgiveness, nor the very privilege of claiming to love her when every action he has ever committed said otherwise. Then, like a clock striking at midnight, the dream abruptly vanishes in a cloud of smoke.
Gojoâs eyes flutter open with a start.
âShit,â he clutches his still asleep shoulder and sits up, looking at the empty room. How long has he been asleep? He looks at his watch â heâs an hour late â but he doesnât really seem to care about the time. Immediately, he sends a quick text to Himiko asking where she is, only to receive a text with a picture attached of the cathedral. It seems she went ahead thinking it would only stir up more trouble if they arrived at the venue together.
Gojoâs mind wanders back to the dream before it is inevitably forgotten. Like a movie that he wants to watch over and over. He gazes at himself in the full body mirror with an empty gaze. All that is in his mind is to smash the reflective material into pieces, knowing that this is not the man his love wanted him to be: a prisoner in his own skin. When is all of this ever going to end? He huffs, slipping on his shoes and shrugging on his navy blue sash.
Not wanting to delay the inevitable any further, he turns on his heel to head to the cathedral reluctantly leaving the traces of his now corroding past behind for an even bleaker future with you as his wife.
ââŠWhereâs Satoru?â
The entire nation is silent when only moments before, they were happily celebrating this supposedly joyful day. A reporter trains his video camera on you as you stand there motionless before an empty altar. Pretty soon, other members of the media who would get a huge scoop out of this travesty follow in his example as if you havenât been humiliated enough by your groom who couldnât even bother to show up at your wedding.
The empress who is seated right of the altar shoots you an apologetic look; she didnât realize that Satoru could stoop this low. This wasnât anything less of a transactional marriage and you thought that the prize that Satoru was promised he would get for marrying you would be enough for him to at least be civil with you. And here you thought that the earrings he gifted to you were a sign that things would eventually settle down.
Without warning, as the VIP guests start to chatter amongst themselves about how pitiful you looked, the woman you dreaded seeing bounds over to you, a solemn expression on her face. You would have believed that, despite the quiet rift between you and Chief-of-Staff Himiko Zenin, she felt a little sorry for you but her choice of wearing white on your wedding day says otherwise.
âMs. (Y/N). Iâm sorry there must have been a problem with the schedule, if you could follow me pleaseââ she begins to lead you to one of the cathedralâs private holding rooms before the grip on your hand tightens.
ââSuguru?â you looked at Suguru with a sad and confused expression. His heart clenches in his chest when he gets a good look of the damage Satoru dealt to you. He looks like he wants to throw something at the press for making a dogshow out of your agony â his hands are clenched into fists, his knuckles white â he takes a few deep calming breaths before he does anything rash.
At Himikoâs persistence, Suguruâs gaze hardens and he gently pulls you away from her as your feet remain planted firmly on the marble floor of the cathedral, leaving you frozen in place at Satoruâs betrayal. He hopes what heâs thinking isnât true, but thatâs proving to be a challenge since he doesnât miss the hickey on Himikoâs neck which had been conveniently hidden by her long brown hair. Maybe she had a part in all this mess? She and Satoru had a history together after all and judging by the way you looked at her with apprehension â he doesnât want to consider it â but perhaps you already knew that.
You are blinded by a cameraâs flash and Suguru springs into action. Turning to the nearest guest, he politely asks, âExcuse me? May I borrow your suit for a second?â When the guest agrees, he shields your face with the Zegna suit to conceal you from the hounding eyes of the press who must be having the time of their lives right about now. Just one picture of the Crown Princeâs crying bride could sell for a good buck but not on his watch.
Not on his fucking watch.
Suguru looks at his father, and then his stepmother, and he couldnât bring himself to be surprised to see them frozen in their places unable to do anything, much less act like they care. Their priority was to look good in front of all these cameras that were terrorizing you, not to comfort their future daughter-in-law. âHey, itâll be okay,â Suguru begins to urgently lead the two of you back to the car, his arm protectively around you while you hold the suit over your head.
âWill it?â You probably sounded like a child, begging for reassurance that all this was some sick dream but at that moment, it didnât matter. You need someone - anyone - to tell you that everything will be alright. The question makes Suguruâs heart sink. In all honesty, he doesnât know, but he didnât need to make you feel even worse if he spoke the truth. So, he nods, choosing to lie to spare you from even more pain because he couldnât count on anyone in this goddamn cathedral to do the same. Heâll have to talk to Satoru later on, this is a bad start to any marriage - no, bad would be an understatement, this is a catastrophic omen of whatâs to come.
Pretty soon, Suguru requests that the roof of the car be reinstalled to hide your desolate expression. âPut it back up, please. The princess must be protected!â In his panic, he accidentally refers to you as a princess even before you are formally crowned Princess of Japan. The imperial household agents quickly get to work and pretty soon, Suguru helps you back into the car, putting up the tinted windows.
You canât feel a thing. You donât even know if you should harshly laugh at your foolishness or cry now that youâve just been humiliated in front of thousands of people all across the world. Shrugging off the suit over your head, Suguru is surprised to see that you werenât crying. You simply sat there, blankly staring at the ring on your finger.
â(Y/N)? Come on, say somethingâŠâ Heâs desperately trying to get you to express the tiniest bit of emotion, somewhat unnerved by your silence.
Turning to look at him, you wonder if he had been surprised by his brotherâs behavior today or if a part of him expected this to happen. âHe hates me.â You were numb. âI donât know if you already knew butââ
ââ-Itâs arranged, I know.â Suguru scoffs under his breath, almost in disbelief that he didnât figure it out sooner when he first heard about your engagement. Just when he thought his family couldnât stoop any lower than they already were, they just had to drag a naive girl into their royal messes. His father and stepmother always preached about modernizing the monarchy but, their archaic ways such as actively banishing a woman of the imperial family should they marry a commoner and having some sort of proclivity for disastrous matchmaking through arranged marriages only say otherwise. âFuck,â he buries his face in his hand, the thought of this predicament was making his head hurt.
You remove the tiara from your head, somehow feeling that a weight has been lifted when you do so. In a span of mere seconds, Suguru now appears exhausted. âI thought heâd at least wait until after the wedding to ignore me for good,â you muttered sadly. âThat was fine, you know, him acting like I donât exist; I know I never stood a chanceâŠagainst her.â
You recall the way Gojoâs lips locked with Himikoâs in a searing kiss, and the way your heart seemed to disintegrate in your chest as you drove off that day, your eyes on the rearview mirror, heartbrokenly watching the both of them as you convinced yourself that you had no right to feel bad. And that is precisely what makes this situation so difficult; you feel like Satoru is cheating on you when in fact, he isnât because he never once told you he loved you. You should be angry, furious, crestfallen at your fiancĂ©âs betrayal, but you couldnât bring yourself to.
âHimiko,â Suguru nods in understanding.
He knows her well, and while he doesnât exactly have any hard feelings towards her, he acknowledges that having her around in the imperial family is a misstep on Satoruâs part; heâs seen her many times before cajoling Satoru into ditching his royal duties for the two of them to spend time together, he has witnessed how she blatantly disrespects the emperor and the empress, he has also been made aware of the many lustrous gifts she has received out of his younger brotherâs pocket.
âYeah.â Your shoulders slump in defeat. âI never asked him to love me, Iâm a lot of things but Iâm not a thief.â You begin to shed tears as you try to convince yourself that you were perfectly fine with Satoru never loving you. You were so confused. Did you want him to love you? Are you now finding yourself craving for his ocean eyes to gloss over with an emotion other than hatred, an emotion similar to love?
Suguru watches you intently as these silent questions fly over your head. âYouâd never ask him to love you but you love himâŠotherwise, why would you be on the verge of tears all the time whenever we talk about something remotely related to him if you didnât?â
You swallowed harshly. âIs it so wrong though? To feel cheated on knowing we were never together in the first place?â Youâve been wondering about that since the day of the public announcement of your engagement and youâve searched your heart for answers from the minute you wake up to the moment you fall asleep on your tear-stained pillow.
Suguru looks pensive for a moment, taking a deep breath before he speaks. âNo, thereâs nothing wrong with that. The heart wants what it wants, itâs pointless to even try to understand it.â
âBut I donât want my heart to want him.â You shook your head. You were going to be in for a world of hurt if you even entertained the idea of falling in love with Satoru Gojo. âHeâll never forgive me for it.â
A sad smile creeps up your face at the thought of Satoru admonishing you, one day, for saying you loved him even at his worst. Being in your early twenties, this was the age of recklessly falling in love, like a car speeding on an empty highway showing no signs of stopping, while you desperately look for the brakes.
A larger hand eventually finds its place above yours, his thumb gently rubs your knuckles that have turned white as you clenched them into fists to stop you from crying and making an even bigger fool of yourself.
âItâs not your fault. To be loved by another is a privilege most people overlook.â
You glance over at Himiko again, and then at yourself: you wore the dress but you werenât the bride. You had the ring but not his affection. Feeling your gaze, Himiko looks at you for a brief moment and an exchange of sorts occurs between you and her: two women desperately envying one another. You had the vote of the people, yet, she had his heart. Almost in condolence, she offers you a curt nod before turning away.
âYou are exactly the kind of girl he needs, (Y/N),â Suguru offers you his handkerchief to dry your tears with. âHeâll need you.â
âHeâll never want me.â
At exactly 2:35 in the afternoon, two hours and five minutes after you set foot at the chapel, Satoru arrives in a proxy vehicle, disguised as some foreign dignitary who arrived late. He steps out of the car behind yours and a collective sigh of relief washes over everyone. You craned your head back to see him dressed in the attire you first saw him in, a blank expression on his face as he was approached by his courtiers who instructed him on what to do.
Suguru looks in the direction of your gaze and he hurriedly steps out, squeezing your hand a final time as he does. A confused expression flashes over Satoruâs face when he sees Suguru step out of the bridal car. What was he doing there? According to the protocol sheet, wasnât Ijichi supposed to be the one to accompany you today?
âSuguru,â Satoru greets his half-brother. âHowâs she doing?â He suddenly asks about your well-being which causes Suguru to be taken aback for a second.
âSheâs been crying but I think sheâll be fine now that youâre here,â Suguru informs him, looking back at the bridal car where you were. The older of the princes pulls the younger aside for a bit. âWhere were you? Sheâs been waiting for more than an hour andâis thatâ?â He suddenly stops mid-lecture when he sees a bruise on the corner of Satoruâs bottom lip. Then, he recalls the hickey he saw on Himikoâs neck. âSatoru,â Suguru bites his lip to stop him from scolding Satoru.
What irks Suguru is that Satoru doesnât even bother to hide it with the palm of his hand or even show a scintilla of regret. Did he really just fuck Himiko on the day of his wedding? âIt was a farewell gift,â Satoru shrugs. âBesides, Iâm here now, does it really matter?â
âYes, it does,â Suguru pinches the bridge of his nose. âYouâve no idea the amount of trouble you caused (Y/N) today, how are you even going to begin to make it up to her?â Not like Satoru plans to make it up to you. In his eyes, you should be on your knees thanking him for showing up at all.
Satoru clears his throat, fidgeting with his left epaulet. âI did nothing wrong.â He believes every word he says. He did nothing wrong, he has nothing to make up for when it comes to you. He never betrayed you, there isnât a relationship to ruin in the first place. âHimiko did nothing wrong to her and still, sheâs suffering the consequences of my actions which shouldnât be the case since, if I can remember correctly, if it werenât for her intervention, if she hadnât stepped in at the last second, youâd be visiting your own brother in jail.â
âWell, if you deserve it, Iâll even bring some snacks,â Suguru counters, earning a harsh warning glare from Satoru. He takes a second to steady himself before continuing. âLook, Satoru, what you did that night isnât something thatâs easily made up for like your little affair with Himiko.â Gojo scoffs in response to that. âYou didnât just hurt our family this time, or that man you brutalized, you hurt the entire nation. And you have to at least make some effort to clean up after yourselfââ
ââBy making my life a living hell without the woman I love? Forced instead to be with the likes of her? How is forcing the two of us to marry for some shitty publicity stunt any more evil than everything Iâve done in the past?â Isnât that what they all thought of him?
ââSheâs not doing anything evil, she did nothing to hurt youââ
ââShe did everything to hurt me by forcing me into this marriage, ripping me from the future I dreamed of with Himiko, so you donât dare make her out to be some saint because she isnât.â
A hush descends on the two brothers: one whoâs made it his lifeâs mission to despise you and one whoâll vouch for your integrity. The two stare each other down, wondering how it was possible they shared a father yet they couldnât be more different. Perhaps, itâs the fact that Suguru was never the empressâs child, rather, he was born of a common woman â a reluctant homewrecker, which would explain, at least to Satoru, why heâs so protective of you. A whoreâs son will defend a whore.
Geto doesnât see you step out of the car, you must have heard the commotion outside the car when Satoru arrived. You blankly stare at Satoru for a good minute who seems to have just finished up a heated discussion with his brother. He looked angry, but why should that surprise you? Some of the imperial household staff encourage you to re-enter the car until the prince has made his way to the altar, but you couldnât listen, you were simply at a loss for words.
He was here.
Almost three hours late, but he's finally here.
Satoru scowls when he sees you. Heâs tried his best to be civil with you, but from what heâs heard from Suguru just now, you were clearly turning everyone against him. Sensing his anger, you tilt your head down for any crime you could have committed whether knowingly or unknowingly, but it seems more like the latter since he always finds something new to hate about you, an act that came so effortlessly to him.
âI donât want to hear another word about (Y/N) from you.â Satoru turns his wrathful gaze to his brother who simply matches his death glare with a bored and disappointed look. Suguru lets out a tiny âtchâ at Satoruâs command, his hatred for you is an established fact, after all, and not just some rumor heâs heard from a jittery bride â the very sound of your name was like nails on a chalkboard to him.
Suguru couldnât believe this. Satoru has been the one willfully hurting you ever since the two of you had that under-the-table arrangement with the empress yet, he had the sheer nerve to act like he was the one being wronged. While he understands his brotherâs sentiments, you didnât want any part in this in the first place, and whatever has driven you to this point of gambling your entire future on a man who doesnât love you must be something that could persuade you to put up with this torture. âIs that a request or a command?â Suguru says flatly, the two men watching you get briefed by the floor director like some actress for a commercial shoot.
âA command from your emperor.â
âFortunately, youâre not the emperor yet.â
Suguru promptly leaves to take his place beside you, nodding to Satoru to get moving and head to the altar already. You shakily take Suguruâs hand, waiting for the doors to open to restart the ceremony. âHe looks angry.â You watch your groom storm to the back of the cathedral. Suguru wants to kick himself, the last thing you needed was Satoru to take out his anger on you once the two of you are alone.
âSorry, Iâm sure itâs just another one of his tantrums. Heâll cool down.â You sincerely hoped that was true. The last thing you need is Satoru getting even with you by suddenly walking up to Himiko and obscenely reciting his vows to her, though you were unaware that the two of them had indeed made a vow to continue loving one another earlier today whilst you were being publicly humiliated by domestic and international media for your failure of a wedding day.
You watch as Himiko scurries to the back of the cathedral as well, and you feel bile rise in your throat at the mere thought of what they could be doing behind closed doors. âDonât even think about it, (Y/N). Donât,â Suguru says firmly. âJust keep your eyes forward, and concentrate on taking one step at a time.â
âI canât. I just canât.â You canât shake them out of your head no matter how hard you try. âThe more I try to forget about them, the more I canât stop thinking about it.â
âThink of something else,â Suguru suggests. âAnything else.â
The last thing you need right now is imagining Himiko and Satoru obscenely murmuring whispers of love to one another, assuming that thatâs the worst they could do. But from what Satoru told him earlier, Suguru might need an anti-hypertensive, enraged at the thought of those two literally screwing one another while you were out here on the verge of an emotional breakdown waiting for a groom who canât be bothered to show up on time.
âFive minutes âtill the doors open. Everyone, please stand by now,â Ijichi peeks out of one of the cathedralâs entrances, eyeing you particularly, as the great double doors slowly creak open, again revealing the majestic interior of the cathedral. Ijichi holds up a hand, signaling you to wait for the Trumpet Voluntary to start playing. You hold your breath then at the sound of the first chord, you and Suguru begin to walk down the altar.
Itâs a long way to the front but the sheer distance between you and him couldnât dull Satoruâs inimitable contrarian beauty, a prose you simply canât understand. âDonât look anywhere else. Focus on the act, focus on what you can see,â Suguru reminds you but really you get what heâs trying to say. Donât go looking for Himiko.
And the only person you can see right now is him, Satoru, the man you are falling for at such a dangerous acceleration that if you were in a car on the freeway, youâd crash and burn in a heap of scorched gasoline in your crazed attempt to outrun these shittyass feelings.
You gulp as you continue on. How is this taking forever? Step by step, you are racing to your own demise. You just know it. But the doors are closed behind you, forever separating you from your past, there is only him. A bitter future.
âSuguru,â The two of you reach the nave of the cathedral, and just a few meters away from the altar, you stop on cue and wait for Satoru to lead you up the steps, towards the altar where the Archbishop of Tokyo is standing. âThank you for being there for me.â
âWell, it was either me or Ijichi.â
Satoru begins to descend down the steps and a look of annoyance passes through his features when he sees you and Suguru chuckling to one another like youâve been friends for the longest time. But then again, he canât really seem to complain, having you off his back because youâre all too busy being chummy with Suguru doesnât seem to be too bad. Satoru casts a glance towards Himiko and then over to you.
âLetâs go.â Satoru takes your hand and you are surprised at how he doesnât seem to have any intention to drag you towards the archbishop. Nodding, you follow your groomâs lead. The ceremony is foreign, no other imperial couple has ever been married in a Christian ceremony so, even Satoru, who has been born to know all the imperial customs, is left trailing off and even, stuttering at some points during the entire affair.
Eventually, the two of you tide miraculously through it and in just one hour, you arenât (Y/N) (L/N) anymore, but instead, you are Princess (Y/N) Gojo, the wife of the crown prince. The usual kiss between the bride and the groom is omitted to preserve the usual custom for an imperial Shinto wedding. As the archbishop and the other key religious figures in Japan gather behind you and the prince, your maid of honor, Utahime, solemnly bows before you with your bouquet in her hands. You turn just a bit to greet her and something catches Satoruâs eye now that your veil was no longer obstructing your features.
It canât be.
The Tokyo Philharmonic Orchestra begins to play the recessional and you and Satoru bow before the emperor and empress, traveling down the aisle, your hands interlocked. Somewhere halfway through to the cathedral doors, you feel Satoru gripping your hand a little more aggressively than usual. âSatoru?â
Heâll give you the benefit of the doubt. Surely, you wouldnât. How on earth did you find those earrings? Unless, someone had snuck into his room and nabbed it while he was asleep earlier. Something in Satoru tells him that you probably didnât know and that you probably didnât do it intentionally â stealing from him â but that doesnât excuse the fact that youâre wearing it like itâs yours when clearly, it didnât belong to you.
Satoru never thought heâd see it again, having kept it locked up in his drawer of memories past their due date to be completely forgotten. He never thought it would ever see the light of day again. But here they were, still in mint condition, reminding him of everything that has slipped through his fingers and everything he has destroyed thus far.
âNot here,â he hisses, glaring at you and thatâs enough to get you to shut up.
Satoru has been indifferent up to this point, and sure, he may be seeing someone else but he is normally civil with you, with a few occasional snarky comments muttered under his breath, but he has made every effort to keep a handle on his emotions. Not once has he ever seemed as angry as he is now. But the scary thing is, you donât even know what youâve done other than wrench him away from Himiko and even that was unintentional on your part.
You make it to the car and he slides up the privacy shutter so the driver doesnât hear a word. Itâll take a few minutes for the convoy to get moving en route back to the Asakusa Palace, the imperial palace that had been originally built to serve as the crown princeâs chief residence before it was turned into a state guesthouse by the National Diet.
Settling into the seat next to you, Satoruâs breaths are ragged trying to control himself from choking the life out of you. His voice comes out, a dangerous edge to it. âWhereâd you get those?â He asks this question like one wrong move or syllable could cost you dearly.
âWhatâ?â And as expected it does when you donât reply quickly enough, not exactly knowing what heâs talking about.
With one swift movement, Gojo brutally yanks off the earring off your right ear causing you to gasp in pain as the pin cuts through your flesh. âI-I donât know what you meanâŠ!â you clutched your maimed ear, blood seeping down your neck.
âYou little thief,â Satoru stares down at the earrings for a while before flinging it onto the car floor. âWhen did you steal this? Who did it for you?â He hits you with a fusillade of accusatory questions and you whimper in fear. Just like a kicked dog, Satoru rolls his eyes at you. âAnswer me!â
âI didnât steal them!â you protest your innocence. âPlease, you have to believe me!â
Satoru grips your throat, cutting off any more of your pleas, theyâll fall on deaf ears anyway. âDid you order one of the servants? Maybe Ijichi? Who stole this for you?â He says, squeezing harder, maybe depriving you of air would make you talk.
âN-no one I swear!â you clutched his forearms trying to get him to release you. âPlease let me goâŠ!â
A huff escapes his lips and Gojo finally relents after what seemed like an eternity of him holding your head underwater. You sputter for breath as if youâve forgotten how to breathe, your hand comes up to your throat where there are now obvious marks of his wrath on your skin. You look even uglier now, he rolls his eyes. âDonât look at me like that.â The monarch sneers at the horrified look on your face. âLike you donât deserve any of this.â
You wanted to speak against that but heâs right. You should have known that every one of your actions wouldnât go unpunished on Satoruâs watch when, as he unfailingly implies every time the two of you are within ten feet of each other, youâve single-handedly ruined his and Himikoâs entire lives.
âYouâre right.â
He feels a wave of annoyance at how pliant you sound, struggling to remain calm after lashing out on you like that. He looks over at you, his mind filled with a mixture of anger and just a tiny bit of remorse when he sees your bleeding earlobe. Heâs aware that what he did was out of line, and while he normally gets into spats with others, heâs never one to lay a hand on a woman.
âYou know, when you ran away that night when we met at that restaurant, you should have gone straight home.â
That way, youâd be spared from all this despair. He almost sounds regretful for what he did and what he will continue to do, but he really didnât mind if he never knew your name in the first place.
âThat would have made the most sense, yeah.â Itâs quiet in the car despite the thundering cheers outside. Satoru looks pensieve, his lips pursed into a thin line. âBut there werenât any taxis that night and the empress is pretty agile for her age.â
âWhat did she say? Did she offer you money?â Satoru casts you a disgusted look.
You wonder if you should tell him. You doubt thereâd be another chance for you to tell him the real reason you agreed to marry him. There wonât be another vulnerable moment like this, you just know it. Satoru deserved to know why youâd kill yourself over and over again in your ill-fates quest to love him, to accept him.
Somehow, you canât help but feel youâre so dishonest compared to him, at least, Satoru had the decency to be casually cruel and brutally honest about Himiko to you, making no attempt to hide the plain fact that he doesnât love you and he never will. But at the same time, you donât want to make things even more difficult for him by burdening him with the truth, so you settle on maintaining your silence. He could believe whatever he wanted to believe, not that heâll ever change his opinion of you.
âYouâre not even gonna deny it?â Satoru sneers.
âEven if I do, youâll never believe me.â
How could he? All youâve done and all you will do from this point on is lie, lie, lie. Lie that you married him without accepting any personal favors from the empress, lie that you donât deserve half of whatâs happening to you right now, lie that you donât feel physically sick when you see Himiko â the very woman youâve trampled on, the woman closest to his heart â lie that everything will eventually turn out alright, lie that youâre not dying every second a hate-filled syllable falls from his lips, lie that you could ever stop this mad freeway chase of loving Satoru Gojo.
But the freeway is empty, your opponents long gone, the stoplight to doomsday is perpetually green, and all thatâs left is a husband that wishes you were dead.
Eventually, the convoy reaches Asakusa Palace and on the historic balcony of the 19th century Western-style palace, he takes your hand as the members of the imperial family wave to the crowd, thinking this day to be a hard-won triumph. Satoru meets your lips for the first time, you are left taken aback at the forced gesture, but there is warmth in that eternal split second that you felt his hot breath against yours, maybe some affection even.
But then again, you are known to be a delusional optimist who still believes her mother who has been in a coma for almost three years now will one day wake up.
Satoru pulls back his eyes that have been wide-open during the kiss, and after he allows a lock of your hair to fall over your scarred ear, he continues to wave to the crowd.
You donât show up to the wedding reception.
That same night, Satoru doesnât show up to your room either. Instead, he sits in the dark of his office, staring at the earrings he recovered from you under the yellowish light of his desk lamp. His fingers brush over the speck of dried blood that marred the appearance of the pin. Somehow, he feels he should apologize to you for that. You should, he could almost hear her say.
He sighs deeply, looking over at his ashtray. Not bad, he expected he would finish an entire pack tonight, but heâs only made it to four before he started coughing. She never really liked his habit of smoking anyway.
The door to the study creaks open breaking the silence, but Satoru doesnât look up, only one person would be brave enough to intrude in his office past dark. The crisp floral smell of top-shelf whiskey fills the air. âGot you something to drink.â Himiko sets down the glencairn on the desk, planting a kiss on Satoruâs lips which he surprisingly doesnât return with equal devotion much to her dismay.
Her eyes then fell on the jewelry piece Satoru was holding. âDid someone else go into my room today?â That alone could explain how the highly-revered Golconda diamond earrings fell into your hands. It wouldnât be hard to steal since the night before, whilst he was searching for a lousy wedding gift he could give you, he accidentally left the earrings outside its dedicated safe.
Himiko stiffens at the question, but she quickly recovers her composure. A hysterical woman like you could never hope to win Satoru over the same way she has. âI donât know, I didnât see someone on my way out,â Himiko shrugs.
âDid you at least see them still sitting on my nightstand on your way out?â
âI didnât notice.â
Somehow, Satoru finds that a little difficult to believe but he knows she wouldnât lie to him. âI saw (Y/N) wearing these earlier today.â He places the earrings back in their respective box, tucking it away, and making a mental note to chuck it in the safe later tonight before he goes to bed.
Himikoâs throat runs dry as she wracks her head for a response. âOh?â She moves to sit on his lap, her arms wrapping around his shoulders. âIâm guessing you got pretty angry.â
âI did,â Satoru sighs. âBut I just canât wrap my head around one thing.â
âWhatâs that?â Himiko asks softly. Her heart was pounding in her chest. The last thing she needs is for her little plan to get Satoru to be angry with you on your wedding day to backfire. âLook, havenât we already established that sheâs a golddigger? Are you really that surprised she stole them?â
Satoru shrugs.
It doesnât add up.
He understands that you might have shown interest in it, and maybe it did cross your mind to steal them, but how could you have known these pieces existed? Itâs not like you ordered one of your ladies or retainers to specifically steal the Golconda earrings, it just didnât make sense to him, even then, some of your retainers might not even be aware that such a thing existed especially since most of them have only been recruited by the Imperial Household Agency recently.
âLook, why donât we just forget about it, hmm? We could sneak out and go for a drive somewhere. Iâm sure (Y/N) wonât mind,â Himiko presses open-mouthed kisses up Satoruâs neck, her hand coming up to fondle him through his slacks. âCome on, you need some cheering up.â
âIâm not driving at this hour, we could stay here.â
Satoruâs eyes flutter close at the sensation, his hand gripping Himikoâs slender waist, allowing her to continue her ministrations. He did need some cheering up after todayâs dismal affair. But at the same time, he canât stop his thoughts from wandering away from how Himiko is unbuttoning his shirt. Damn it. Satoru canât focus on her, itâs like his normally calculated mind descended into a valley of fog.
Himiko grimaces at Satoruâs lack of attention. She quickly stops her futile attempts at intimacy. âJust stop thinking about them. You got them back, didnât you?â she says, a hint of frustration laced in her voice. âBesides, even if (Y/N) did steal them, itâs not like youâd have any use for them anymore.â
Something stirs within Satoru and before he could stop himself, a flash of anger appears on his usually calm and flirtatious demeanor when heâs with Himiko. âThatâs not the point. You know very well what those earrings mean to me.â
Heâs shared it with her before. She knows everything about him, more so than anyone who has ever known anyone else on an intimate level before. There exists a version of Gojo that only Himiko knows, and keeps like a sacred prayer. Which is exactly why Satoru is livid about her downplaying the importance of everything he keeps in his safe, his personal mausoleum of the warmest spring of his youth that he would have longed for still had it not been for Himiko.
Himiko, for once, allows herself to be vulnerable even if for just a bit. And a look of pure hurt takes over her lovestruck demeanor earlier. But that is instantly replaced with anger. Anger at Satoru for continuing to hold onto things that should have no meaning anymore because sheâs here now. Loving him is a dangerous game, what else could she expect from a man who is caught between the past and the future?
âForget it.â Satoru stands up, shrugging Himiko off his lap. âIâll find out one way or another. You should go home.â
Himiko painfully picks up on the fact that Satoru told her to âgo homeâ and not âhead to bedâ, meaning she wonât be sleeping with him tonight. Satoru runs a hand through his mop of white hair, calling Ijichi. He knows itâs late but Ijichi should still be in the premises right now.
âIjichi? Iâm heading out.â
âWhat now? Itâs two in the morning. You still have a ribbon-cutting ceremony to go to with the princess tomorrow.â
âJust get over here right now, I wonât take long.â Heâll still show up to that stupid ribbon-cutting at the University of Tokyo with you tomorrow. Speaking of you, he should probably refrain from doing such things again. He begins to think of ways he could, in a way, make it up to you for his behavior but that doesnât mean youâre out of the frying pan just yet.
Just because heâs suspicious about these circumstances doesnât mean that he believes your desperate plea earlier that you didnât attempt to steal an integral part of his past. No one could replace the person whom those earrings first belonged to. Not even the woman standing in front of him right now, the object of his desires, the source of your pain.
âWhat? Youâre going there again? Donât tell me youâre still hoping sheâll answer for once.â Himikoâs nostrils flared in anger at the thought of Satoru leaving.
âDonât push it, Himiko.â Satoru takes a dangerous step towards her which causes her to somehow shrink in fear. âI donât wanna hurt you.â
âYouâre already hurting me!â
What Satoru says next is like a bullet being fired through a thin sheet of glass.
â(Y/N) is enduring far worse than you and she still seems to be grateful about it. Why donât you accompany her for a week? Maybe learn a thing two about being silent like her?â
Satoru leaves.
He comes back at about eight oâclock the next morning to see your newly framed wedding photo shattered on the floor next to a crumpled up picture of another person whose name Satoru couldnât even speak without bursting into bitter tears midway.
How ironic it is to be married on the day he lost her.

a/n: yall this one was a blast to write.
pairing: nanami kento x f!reader, yuji itadori x f!reader (platonic), satosugu as well!
want to support your local writer? send me a coffee!
I wonât be able to pick up Yuji today from daycare, do you mind heading there alone?
No worries at all, Kento. You know I donât mind. Is everything okay?
Yes. My boss is being particularly pushy about getting this project done by today. Iâm sorry to leave you alone.
Iâll be fine. But please donât push yourself too hard, love.Â
Thank you, Y/N. Iâll try not to.
Iâll make your favourite for dinner, okay? Love you.
That would be wonderful, dear. I love you too.
When youâd received the text from Nanami, you hadnât thought anything of it. This wasnât the first time heâd asked you to pick up Yuji, and that was way before the two of you ever were in a relationship. It hadnât been much of a hassle then, given that you lived next door to him but it was even less of a worry now since youâd moved in with Nanami and Yuji into their apartment. Often, the two of you would pick up Yuji together and since youâd started joining Nanami, Yuji had been ecstatic about the whole thing that you made it a goal to go every day.
Youâd already been out doing some errands, just about to make your way to the school with the assumption that Nanami would meet you there, when youâd gotten his text. Youâd shrugged the whole situation off, mentally thankful youâd gotten all the necessary ingredients for Nanamiâs favourite dinner when youâd grabbed groceries with a light frown at the realization of how hard Nanamiâs office had been pushing him recently. Luckily it was the end of the week and you could spend the weekend making sure he got the rest he definitely deserved.
Your walk to Yujiâs daycare isnât long at all and your thoughts are filled with the wonderful and loving family youâve found yourself. None of it was in your plans for your life but you couldnât deny how incredibly happy you were. Yuji was an absolute bundle of joy that you loved like your own son, and Nanami was the best boyfriend you could ask for â understanding, loyal, and loving. He checked off any and all boxes that may exist and made you incredibly happy.
You wouldnât trade any of it.
âY/N/N!â
Youâre pulled from your thoughts at the familiar sound of Yujiâs voice. You blink, not having even realized youâd reached the daycare until a blob of pink comes crashing towards you, slamming right into your legs as Yuji hugs you as best he can with his small arms, peering up at you with bright, shining eyes. You smile at the sight, crouching down to his level as you distantly catch his teacherâs eye and offer a smile when she waves at you, before putting your full attention on Yuji.
âHi, Yuji-kun,â you giggle, ruffling his hair. You notice his eyes drift past you, and are quick to explain. âYour father is stuck at work for a bit but I was thinking me and you could make his favourite dinner together, how does that sound?âÂ
Yuji beams; âperfect!â
You let out a laugh, nodding your head. âHow was your day?â
âAmazing!â Yuji practically cheers, and you blink slightly at the pure excitement in his voice. Suddenly, heâs letting go of your leg to take your hand in his own, his grip quite tight for such a small child as he starts pulling. âI want you to meet my friend, Y/N/N. His name is Megumi!â
You internally laugh at Yujiâs short-attention span. Youâd thought heâd be more disappointed about Nanami not being able to show up, but as usual, the boy was effortlessly positive and didnât seem to let himself get phased by many things.
That, or he was just happy as long as one of you came.
âOkayâjust, slow down a little, Yuji, Iââ
âMEGUMI!â
Your lips part as Yuji practically bellows the name, eyes drifting ahead of yourself to the direction Yujiâs yanking you towards. You see a small boy, just slightly taller than Yuji, with black, spiky hair (itâs quite amazing actually), in a similar uniform as Yuji but he looks a lot more neat and put-together than Yuji doesâeven though every morning, you make sure Yuji leaves with his buttons all done and his collar straight, something or another is amiss every time you come to pick him up.
The boy glances back at the call of his name, seemingly unphased by how loud Yuji was, and itâs then you notice the man standing next to him.
Heâs tall. Very tall. Heâs got startlingly white hair that falls effortlessly around his head, shaping his face perfectly and heâs wearing a pair of black sunglasses but yet as his eyes drift in the direction of you and Yuji, it still feels like heâs staring directly into you.
âY/N/N! Y/N/N! This is Megumi,â Yuji tugs at your hands and you pull your eyes away from the man, moving to smile down at Megumi. âMegumi, this is Y/N/N. The one I was talking about.â
âItâs lovely to meet you, Megumi,â you offer gently, smiling softly down at the boy.
Meeting your eyes, youâre shocked as Megumi bows, offering a small ânice to meet youâ. You donât think youâve met such a polite young boy, even if he was a little quiet. Itâs funny, you think, how Yuji couldâve made such a friendâsomeone so quiet and calm compared to your loud and boisterous boy. But then again, didnât they say opposites attract?
âI certainly donât know where he got that from.â
You glance up as the man with white-hair speaks up, grinning at you as he steps forward, ruffling Megumiâs hair. The boy instantly frowns as he does, batting the manâs hands away as he he grumbles to himself all whilst Yuji giggles, moving to point out Megumiâs frown and the two of them fall into a chatter amongst themselves as the man with white-hair sticks his own out towards you.
âSatoru Gojo,â the man introduces, âand you must be the famous Y/N Yuji keeps telling me about.â
Slowly, you let your hand fall in his, nodding. âYes, I, um⊠Iâm Kentoâsââ
âWife,â Gojo cuts off, smirking. âYes, I actually work with your husband.â
Your eyes widen, cheeks burning red; âoh⊠oh no! Weâre just dating, not⊠weâre not married, Gojo-san.â
âAh, please, call me Satoru,â he brushes off, âand sorry. I just assumed Nanami wouldâve put a ring on you already with the way he talks about you. Heâs absolutely smitten.â
Your cheeks stay flushed, glancing at your feet. âAh, well⊠you knowâŠâ desperate for the conversation to change, you glance back up at him. âAre you Megumiâs father?â You only ask because the two of them donât really look all that relatedâof course, that didnât mean much.
Still, it was a shift in conversation.
âNot biologically, no,â Gojo nods, âbut I do take care of him.â
âBarely.â Megumi cuts in, glowering at the man.
You press a hand to your mouth to stifle your laughterâfor such a young boy, he was rather quick-witted.
Gojo sticks his tongue out at the boy, and you find yourself unable to stop the giggle that leaves your lips at the sight. They were a rather odd pair, werenât they?Â
Gojo glances at you as you giggle and your eyes widen.
âOh, my apologies, Satoru-san! Itâs justââ
âNo need to apologize,â he waves you off, stepping towards you. âNow, where is Nanami?â
âOh, he had to stay at work to finish something up. Speaking of, Yuji and I should be heading home. Weâve got to start making dinner. But it was lovelyââ
A huge gasp cuts you off. You blink, glancing down at Yuji who stares up at you with an expression like heâs come up with the best thing in the entire world.
âY/N/N! Can Megumi and Gojo-san stay for dinner?â
-
After a long and grueling day, Nanami is more than excited to come home to you and his son and have a nice, quiet, relaxing evening.
At least, that was the plan.
Until he sees Gojo Satoru standing in his living room.
âWhat the hell are you doing here.â
He ignores his rather sharp language in front of the children. Never, ever has he ever wanted to see Gojo standing in his apartment, in his living room and least of all, has he ever wanted Gojo to be anywhere near youâtalking with you, making you laugh, offering to help you with dinnerâany of it.
Your wide eyes fall on Nanami the second you hear his voice, and Nanami feels a flash of guilt when he sees the panicked look in your eyes.
Gojo just beams. âNanami! Youâre just in time for dinner.â
Yuji comes bounding towards Nanami, hugging his father tightly and Nanami, despite the annoyance standing in front of him, of course returns the hug to his son, as Yuji beams up at him; âI asked Y/N/N if Megumi and Gojo-san could come for dinner and she said yes!â
Nanamiâs eyes drift to you then, noticing the way you step towards him nervously. âI hope thatâs okay,â you offer quietly and Nanami frowns at the look in your eyes. You look positively worried, and he curses himself silently when he realizes itâs because you think youâve upset him. âSatoru-san said he was a friend from work and Yuji seemed super excited, soââ
Stepping towards you, Nanami gently pulls himself from Yuji, wrapping his arm around your waist to lean forward and press a kiss against your forehead. âItâs no worries, love. Itâs not you Iâm annoyed by,â he assures you, smiling down at you before his gaze hardens and he faces Gojo who continues to stand smugly in the living room. âItâs him.â
Itâs then you learn that while Gojo may consider them friends, Nanami certainly doesnât.
At least, not outwardly. You can tell Gojo definitely annoys your boyfriend, but Nanami still tolerates him nonetheless and itâs proven in the way he doesnât immediately kick Gojo out.Â
You also notice how Nanami is particularly clingy the entire night â he sticks by you, as if attached to your hip, constantly offering to help, barely allowing Gojo to step within a few feet of you. Gojo notices, of course, and he uses it to his advantage to constantly tease Nanami but you find you hardly care â Nanami was hardly ever possessive and it made you feel giddy that he was so desperate to make sure Gojo didnât flirt with you all whilst making sure not to be too overbearing on you or do anything you werenât comfortable with.
It was a feeling that had you tingling all night.
âThe dinner was fantastic, Y/N/N.â
Nanami grunts at the nickname Gojo had decidedly started calling you halfway through dinner, a name heâd picked up from Yuji, but you just smile at the man. Gojo is standing by the door to the apartment, a passed out Megumi in his hands. Yujiâs already been tucked into bed by Nanami twenty minutes ago when the two boys had promptly passed out on the couch together. Gojo had moved to excuse himself shortly after, of course with slight pressure from Nanami, who continued to have his arm around your waist, you tucked into his side as the both of you stood across from Gojo, seeing him and Megumi off.
âIâm glad you enjoyed it,â you smile, leaning into Nanami. âIâm sorry we kept Megumi up so late.â
Gojo shrugs, ânah, itâs fine. Suguru might be a bit upset, butâŠâ
Your brows furrow, âwhose Suguru?â
Gojo grins. âMy husband.â
Your eyes widen and Nanami shakes his head from next to you; âyet you continue to flirt with my girlfriend.â
âKento,â you mumble, turning to him embarrassed.
Gojo just laughs; âyour girlfriend is very beautiful,â he grins over at you, and you glance down at your feet in embarrassment. âBesides, Suguru knows I love him.â Gojo rolls his eyes at Nanami, before turning back to you. âHeâs actually out on a trip with the girls for the weekend. Left yesterday.â
Your lips part; âgirls?â
âYes, Megumiâs sister, Tsumiko, and two other girls, Mimiko and Nanako that we adopted.â
You let out a gasp, âoh my! Thatâs so wonderful,â you beam up at the man. âThe six of you must be so happy.â
Gojo laughs; âI wonder about Megumi sometimes⊠He didnât wanna go on the trip, said it would be boring but I think it was because he didnât wanna miss seeing Yuji at daycare. The two of them are like two peas in a pod.â
Truly, you feel like your heart could melt. Turning to Nanami, you beam at him; âweâll have to have Megumi over more often then.â Then, turning back to Gojo, you add; âand of course Suguru-san and the girls!â
Nanami frowns, but you donât see it as Gojo grins back at you; âIâll make sure to let Suguru know.â He assures, ânow, I should go. I think I mightâve overstayed my welcome.â
You glance over at Nanami at that, noticing the frown on his lips and let out a light giggle as you nod at Gojo. With one final goodbye, Nanami opens the door for him, before shutting it the second heâs sure heâs gone. You watch as the manâs shoulders instantly sag the second Gojoâs gone and tilt your head.
âDo you really not like Satoru-san that much?â
His eyes widened; âno⊠no, itâs not that. Iâve known Gojo for a long time. Heâs annoying, but heâs a⊠friend.â Then, stepping towards you, he shakes his head. âIâm sorry, love. Iâm just tired.â
His hands fall on your waist, tugging you towards him and you fall into him with ease, letting your head fall on his chest as you hum out softly. âI know. Donât worry about cleaning up, Iâve got it.â Leaning back slightly, you press a kiss to his jaw. âJust get some rest.â
Nanami shakes his head; âno, you already made dinner for me tonight. I can help clean.â
âButââ
âNo buts,â he smirks down at you. âI want to help.â
With a moment more of hesitance, you nod. And the two of you fall into a comfortable silence as you work to tidy up from dinner. With the two of you, itâs cleaned a lot faster and before you know it, the two of you are already tucked into bed, kitchen clean, clothes swapped for more comfortable attire and feeling ready to pass out completely.
Just as Nanami presses a final kiss to your cheek, arm wrapped around your waist with your back pressed to his chest, you can't help but ask; âwere you really jealous of a married man? Married to another man, no less?â
Thereâs a pause. Then, â...maybe.â
My widdle Hisako baby đ„șđ©·
Atsumu hates after game interviews.
Itâs part of his job of course, but heâs not the captain, his just the star setter for one of the best teams in the league; heâs also a father of a toddler, who, when he can after a home game, wants to get home to read her a bedtime story and be with the beautiful mother of his child.
Right now, however, he wants to chuck all of that out the window, as youâre off in the corner snickering with Kiyoomi while Hisako in her fathers lap pulls his lips and chin, interrupting every answer with a grab or a giggle or a bite of his fingers.
âYouâre cruel,â Kiyoomi whispers to you.
You shrug in indifference, âhe wanted to spend more time with her after the game. Not my fault they picked him for postgame.â
âYouâre cruel,â he repeats, and the gods must be listening because on stage, Atsumu repeats the same thing when Hisako fish hooks his lip.
This time, itâs Atsumuâs turn to tell Hisako âyouâre cruelâ and it has the crowd in a tizzy. You cover your mouth to laugh quietly, and you get a nudge from Kiyoomi in response.
A massive frame stalks past you both, and you stick your leg out to playfully kick him, "hey, Captain."
Meian grins and sends you a wink, "hey, Mrs. Miya."
"Good game."
"I'd say so," he nudges his head towards Atsumu at the table. "He played well."
"He always does."
âIs there anything that you hope to achieve next game?â A reporter asks, snapping you all back into focusing the interview at hand.
Atsumu sighs softly, âI guess I just want to repeat the momentum, keep it from getting sloppy and-â
âShugu?â
All heads turn towards Hisako, Atsumuâs smiling down at her. âShugo?â
âShugu!â Her tiny hand points off stage a few feet away, at the captain just outside the frame.
Meian beams, "guess that's my cue."
âYeah, Shugo just left,â he chuckles. âShe loves Meian. More than she loves me-â
Quickly, Meian comes bouncing back on the stage, wasting no time in formalities before scooping Hisako up in his big, burly arms. He bites at her cheeks while she squeals and flails her limbs, squealing and laughing while the crowd coos in adoration. Atsumuâs beaming as he watches his captain carry his favorite person out, and it almost makes you tear up from the sight of so many people positively adoring your little girl.
Kiyoomi claps a big hand on your shoulder, trying to ground you and your emotions. âHeâs a good dad.â
âHeâs the best dad.â
Look at Him.

warning(s): past relationship, clingy!gojo, ex-husband!gojo, co-parenting situation, crack fic. wc; 1.6k

a/n: this is purely just a goof fic because i've put nothing but angst out there so far sooo have a laugh. hope yall enjoy :3
âSo, what do you do for a living?â
"A teacher."
"Oh, wow! What grade, subject?"
"Uh, highschoolers and the subject kinda varies on the day."
"Like a substitute teacher?"
"Um....sure, yeah! Substitute teacher."
"That's awesome. Mad respect, kids can be demons."
You were quickly discovering that the dating field had changed in the five years that you had been married. An endless back and forth about what someone did, what's their favorite color, what's their hobbies. Boring questions that you would ask your students on the first day was used in over the table date conversation. Until, until, they got to that question they so desperately wanted to ask.
Would you want to take this back to myâ
There was a vibration against your thigh as your date started to go onto a monologue about how much he disliked kids. In all honesty, you couldn't really remember his name. The introductions had been awkward and a little nerve wrackingâ you were almost sure he had no idea who you were either.
You tugged your phone out of your pocket and resisted the audible sigh that threatened to leave you when you saw the notification.
Satoru please tell me why my beautiful, radiant, amazing, intelligent daughter just said her mommy is on a date. feeling sick to my stomach, don't tell me this is true.
You rolled your eyes. Your ex-husband had always been so overdramatic. His main focus was always on the bit that could come from a situation. However, this was a quality you do used to admire about him. His ability to make any situation seem like it was a funny happenstance that you'd never encounter again.
Now, it was nothing more than a nuisance.
Satoru oh my god, you left me on read. it's true. it's true. i hope you know i just threw up. i threw up everywhere. i might die. at least, tell me he's ugly. please god let him to be ugly.
A sigh, you typed out the quickest message you could without your date asking what's wrong.
You I hope you're not ignoring said daughter to ask me about some date. I'll be home later, please refrain from texting me.
You were about to set your phone down when another text came through. This one appeared to more distraught than the last.
Satoru o h your tone. it's over. it's really over. i might just kill myself this is the worst night of my life. y/n, i'm genuinely feeling sick. please, is he ugly? he must be boring because you're texting back.
You were almost inclined to remind Satoru you both had been divorced for a year already. That this was bound to happen and you two had, in fact, spoken about it months into the divorce. You had played with some 'what if's and there was a mutual agreement that the other wouldn't get jealous and be dramatic about the other getting in a relationship whenever the time comes. It was a surprisingly adult conversation.
You should've known better when Satoru proudly proclaimed he didn't care who you got involved with.
You Satoru, we talked about this. We're adults and we're divorced. Please bother someone else, like Suguru.
Satoru i don't wanna talk to suguru. i wanna talk to youuu (;ïč;) i can't believe you've done this. ten years. ten years of loyalty. im sick to my stomach.
You You asked for the divorce.
"Is everything okay?"
You eyes snapped up from your phone and towards your date. He had the good grace to be wearing a relatively concerned expression, eyeing you wearily.
You quickly tucked your phone back into your pocket, ignoring the insistent vibrations it gave to smile apologetically. "I'm sorry, my daughter had an accident and I had to, you know, send a quick text to her babysitter." It was easier to explain away a daughter than it was a clingy ex-husband who was well in his dissent into insanity. Really, you were doing this guy a favor keeping him in the dark.
However, his face still paled and he straightened. "You have a kidI'm so, so sorry. I just went on a two minute rant about how much kids are equivalent to demons." He seemed to spiral as he pressed his hands against his face, uttering curses to himself. "I get so nervous with these dates. I truly meant nothing by it."
You smiled in amusement, "It's no problem, really. I'm not exactly disagreeing." He peeked from between his fingers and blinked at you dumbly. "Just because I'm a parent doesn't mean I don't agree. I mean, my kid can be a bit much sometimes. I love her, but she's a lot like her dad in that way."
It always made your chest blossom. The way Saori was a carbon copy of Satoru. From the rambunctious personality, to the piercing blue eyes, and white hair. Your genes hadn't won in the battle, but you were almost grateful. Satoru tried to tell you that she had your smile and your wit, but you weren't entirely convinced. She was Satoru and Satoru was her.
You were extremely lucky that he was a good dad.
"Oh? Do you mind me asking if her dad's still around?" His tone was indication enough: a daughter and an ex of some kind was pushing it for him.
You tensed up, feeling deep regret already. "Uh, yeah." His eyes shifted away and you reached forward, taking his hand. "But, he's not, like, crazy or anything! He's just a good dad."
Your date chuckled nervously. "I-I just don't want to get involved in some, um, some family dynamic."
You thought it was a little presumptuous of him to think this would go that far, or he'd get in the way. But you were too focused on defusing the situation.
"Oh, no, it's not like that! We've got a healthy balance, y'know? He does his piece, I do mineâ that's it!"
He scrunched his face. "So... an open relationship?"
"No!" You press your hands against your face with a huff. "No, we're not together anymore. We just co-parent."
He opened his mouth to further question you when your phone vibrated very audibly. His eyebrows raising. "Your daughter?"
You sighed. "Please give me one moment."
With jerky movements, you pull your phone from your pocket. The assortment of messages that came where spread over the ten minutes you decided to ignore him.
Satoru okay, you've got me there. but my big heart is breaking. i hope he's ugly and he smells. okay, i spoke with suguru and he said i'm an idiot who should apologize. in my defense, i'm a little itty bitty drunk. and no, saori is not awake. papa put her to bed before bringing out the whiskey. im so sorry my beautiful deity. that not ugly, not smelly man is so lucky to be in your presence and i hope you have a good date. also i hope he gets hit my a car. (âœïŒŸ)
You I'm going to kill you with my bare hands. Genuinely, count your days, Gojo Satoru.
Satoru hot, hot, hot!!! (âÂŽâĄ`)⥠did he actually get hit by a car?
You Is there something you want?
Satoru him dead. and you home :((((
You You don't want me home. I swear to god, if you're on my couch, drinking when I get home, I will ruin your life.
Satoru promise??? â°(âżÂŽâŁ`âż)âŻâĄ but, actually, i wanted to ask your opinion on something
You For real?
Satoru for realsies. [Image Attachment]
Completely blinded by your irritation, you don't even hesitate to open the picture as it loads. Although you regret it the moment it does.
It's a picture of Satoru. He's at what seems to be the beach (must've been the fun activity him and Saori were going to join Suguru for), his sunglasses were on the top of his head, and he was grinning at the picture. One hand was resting against his pectoral and the veins in his hand was prominent. An obvious attempt at being charming and flirtatious. It was working too.
If it weren't for the fact that you knew him and were his ex, you might've just swooned.
"Oh, my god, is that him?" Your date was staring at your phone with wide eyes. His face even more pale than before. He started to shake his head as he stood, snatching his jacket from the back of his chair. "No way. I am not getting involved! I'm sorry, you're a nice woman, but I know when I'm not winning. And I'm definitely not winning against that."
Your eyes widened considerably, "What? No! Please don't leave. He's an idiot, I swear there's nothingâ"
"He is... a hunk. I am not. In no shape or form am I at all comparable to that. Lookâ" He reached forward, grabbing your phone and holding the picture up to be beside his face. "Look at the difference! Model who has won Japan's hottest man at least eight times before he's 30 to meâ Look at him!"
"It's not even like that!" You snatched your phone back and stared at him in frustration. "He's my ex, I do not want him!"
He waved his hands in front of your face. "I know how this will go. You think you like me and then your super hot and super sexy ex-whatever makes you realize the familiarity is good. Then I get dumped." He straightened, latching his hands onto the lapels of his jacket. "I just realized I am a side character. In my own life. Goddammit."
He barely glanced at you as he paid for the dinner, then left as quickly as he could. Still, you didn't even know his name.
Satoru oooo taking you awhile to respondddd still in love with me? (äșșâÏâ)

Toji Fushiguro
Pairing: Toji Fushiguro x f!Reader
Warnings: Pure Fluff, Razors, Shaving
Summary: Toji refuses to shave, and his girlfriend refuses to kiss him. She takes matters into her own hands to kiss her boyfriend's beautiful face again.
Discord 18+ - Twitter - Ko-Fi
Toji has to shave at least once per week, or else kissing him becomes a hassle. Tojiâs problem is that heâs lazy, and he doesnât like to shave. He claims itâs a waste of time and energy, and you argue about it because it prickles on your skin when you kiss⊠Or do anything else.
Yet, Toji complains when you refuse to kiss him. Throughout the day you randomly kiss him, something that the man has grown accustomed to, but when you notice a stubble, you avoid it. Toji notices the lack of love, and he hates it. He isnât the tender one in your relationship, but during the sudden decline of affection, he tries to be. However, when Toji tries to kiss you, you put your hand over his mouth.
âYou need to shave.â You tell him, and he frowns. You have no idea what youâve done by declining his kissâ Oh, youâve started a battle that you cannot end.
Rejecting his kiss is a sin in his eyes, and heâll make sure you repent. Heâll let his facial hair grow, and you assure him that you wonât kiss him until he shaves. One of you will give up after some time without kissing, and heâs sure that itâll be you. He wonât kiss you until you agree to kiss him with a beard (a stubble since at the bare minimum he trims it, he isnât sure that a beard is the look for him).
Heâs right, youâre a weak weak woman. By the second week, you want to jump on him and give him all your love. But he wonât listen to your pleads of shaving. You take matters into your own hands after a month.
âWhatâs that?â Toji asks, eyes looking up from his phone to find you holding a white plastic bag. Maybe he wouldnât ask if you werenât dangling it in front of him. You grab his hand and attempt to pull him up from the couch, and he stands up, a bit reluctantly. He smirks as you lead him to the bedroom, commenting, âI like where this is going.â
But then you take him to the bathroom, and force him to sit on the toilet. You get two things out of the plastic bag: shaving cream and a razor. He furrows his eyebrows before shaking his head, âIâm not doing it.â
âBut I am.â Thereâs a certain look on your face, and he doesnât dare challenge you because he knows that if he does, your relationship might come to an end.Â
You open the faucet, and you splash cold water on his skin, causing him to jump up a little. You get shaving cream all over his beard, before you grab the razor. You swipe the razor in an upward movement on his skin, and he whines, âIf youâre going to do this, at least be careful and donât cut me.â
You cut him again, and he whines again. It takes a couple more cuts before he grabs the razor from you, and goes to the mirror to do it himself. You smile at him through the mirror, and he swears itâs a demonic smile. You got what you wanted in the end.
You watch every movement through the mirror, and when Toji is finished, you squish his face. Toji scowls, and you peck his lips. You kiss him over and over again, and his face softens. You kiss his cheeks and all over his face. He would almost hate that youâve won, if you werenât so loving.
âI love kissing your little face.â You take a break between kisses before continuing, and Toji smiles. He has to push you off, although heâs a bit disappointed at his own actions. He wants to let you kiss him all day long, but he canât. He has to interrupt you.Â
He says, âI have to grab some bandaids.â
Could you make an idea where Bokuto, Iwaizumi, and Suna,Wakatoshi find out that Readers had a crush on them in the past.
Hey love sure I can ^^ my pleasure
I only did 3 characters (*ÂŻïž¶ÂŻ*) (it's more about length than anything) oh and you didn't specify the genre so I took some liberties there
Pairings (separate): Timeskip! Ushijima, Bokuto & Iwaizumi x Fem! Reader
Prompt: They find out you had a crush on them in the past
Genre: Angsty (barely there), crack, fluff
Warnings & content: Grammar - cursing- kinda short ugh - Honorifics - Argentinian Tooru đ€đ» - Reader is Oikawa's sister on Iwa's
Ushijima Wakatoshi
"A ton of girls had crushes on you Wakatoshi"
"I find that.... Non probable"
"No no, he's right"
Since Ushijima had finally spare time on his busy schedule he could meet with some of his former teammates and still friends.
Stories came and went, memories, little inside jokes. And finally, the subject of high-school or college crushes, first loves, you name it, came into conversation
"Shirabu probably had more fans in that aspect?"
"With that bowl cut?!?!"
"Because he's a med student you dumbass!"
"No need to yell Semi Semi"
"Stop that!"
"Now now uh.... Wakatoshi are you alright?"
Ushijima looked like he had a revelation or rather as he was depicting some big enigma
"How would those people act when having a crush... On me"
Both of the once spiky haired friends looked at each other, one more amused than the other
"Well it depended on the person Wakatoshi-kun. Some of them were more shy and looked at you from the bleachers"
"I saw one being bolder and leaving some notes on your locker, you never told us about it so we let it go"
Ah yes, notes. Little notepads or post it mainly in green with encouragement words, compliments to his appearance, to his devotion to the sport and so on
"The notes one... I.... I know her"
A dual toned of a "What?!?!" screeched comically to the sky
And there was a sudden change in the vibes of the café you were sitting down, as you felt a shiver running through your spine
"Who's talking shit about me?"
"No one geez. Get to work, we're under the deadline you have to move" Your co-worker said with a whine. You both had taken your laptops to keep on track as the official time at the office wasn't enough
Thankfully you were at least enjoying a little treat before arriving home to deploy into your bed and sleep like a bear but....
People around couldn't help to notice 3 tall grown men, one in rock-punk attire, another with a red buzzcut and THE Ushijima Wakatoshi
Safe to say you're quite clueless when tired and tasting a late night iced coffee with double whipped cream
"That's her?"
"How do you know her?"
Ushijima sighed and didn't take off his gaze from you as he wrote down on something that was in his hands
"She works in the monthly volleyball magazine... We kind of have been finding each other even after school"
"Soooo a sports journalist, nice Wakatoshi-kun, oh?"
The tease didn't reach Ushijima's ears as he was walking up to you with an unusual shy stance and with the something he wrote on clutched in his big hands
He was practically at your nose when you noticed his presence, and his extended hand with a pink post it
"Ushijima?"
"May I give back those words you sent to me?"
Cue two (three with your coworkers) distand gasps and chuckles, in synch to the memories that flew to your mind
"What words do you - Ohhhhh right....."
You coughed awkwardly
"Umm do you know what those meant? Like what little me wanted to achieve?"
Ushijima nodded and sat down by your side with a look you recognised
The one he had when he targeted a place to spike, a goal
"I understand now, quite shamefully.... But the intention is now, I hope, the same"
Your brain stopped working and the only sight was of 16 year old you giving up and just delivering Ushijima the notes in person, not caring since his reaction was always the same: A soft "Thank you, I'll work hard" and sometimes a pat on your head
You were sure your feelings weren't reciprocated. And while it hurt a little, you didn't stop giving the little snippets of your puppy love, just wanting him to feel cared of, feel loved even...
So imagine your poor heart when you saw the post it
A little wobbly heart and a "I liked you too, I still do"
And when you glanced at him you couldn't suppress the palpitations and heat over your face. As if you were a teenager over again
Ushijima wasn't at a better state.
He remembered himself, fixed on his first love: the court and the feeling of victory. He knew you were special to him and vice versa, after all, who would spend so many ink and paper on him? He appreciated the gestures and the fuzzy feeling in the pit of his stomach, he thought it was because your words were always sincere, without a second intention, he liked that. That was all, he swore
But like some sort of cinematic flashback he realised how many other people made known their affection for him, and while he had noticed them he never felt the same as with yours.
Guess some form of love was what he felt everytime he saw your gifts, even after when he saw you on your classroom or club room. Almost as when he played volleyball with his dad on his little backyard
Adult Ushijima wanted to smack his poor oblivious self, even his self of half an hour ago. Alas it was too late to be at the end of your fondness
"You can always pretend this didn't happen-"
He said, as a way to save you from the embarrassment
But it was your turn to surprise him, as you interrupted him
"Over my dead body"
You saw him smile at your dramatic answer and when he was about to grab your hand your coworker dissipated the little glittery pink atmosphere you had
"Hey earth to my friend? Sorry Ushijima-san I need her to finish this. After that she's all yours"
Safe to say you worked faster than ever with the new hope sown into your heart and the pinky holding yours under the table
Bokuto KĆtaro
Right now the only thing your mind could be concentrated on was the way Bokuto stuffed down your batch of muffins. His squirrel like cheeks making you giggle internally, you couldn't believe this hunk of a man would be enjoying your work so much
"They're always so good! I swear you make the best comfort pastries here!"
You hummed as you gently swiped some of the crumbs plastered on his cheeks "Glad to see they bring such much joy Bokuto-san"
"You sound just like Akaashi, just Bokuto is fine really"
"I refuse to. Remember, it's like we met again"
It was somewhat true. You've had met on a Fukorodani vs Nekoma practice match and while you were cheering for your own team the one who caught your eye was the opposite team's ace.
Crushing on him wasn't difficult
The difficult part was to go up to him and confess. As emotionally intelligent as he was, it seemed like his ability died when you were on his ratio
You gave him a letter on the training camp "Oh thanks for the support! I love encouraging notes!"
Gave him something for valentines, when you sneaked out of school to deliver it "D'awww you didn't have to. I'll share these with the team, there's a lot!"
At one point you just decided to stop. Fortunately at the same time you both graduated and, since you wouldn't follow volleyball steps, you didn't think you would find him again
Except you did, when he was broader, more cheerful, more mature.... Even more handsome.
The little bakery escapade leadered by Hinata ended up in your heart feeling the same twisting motion you did on your cinnamon rolls.
And now you're here, after some months were Bokuto had spent quite literally all of his free time with you. He didn't even eat in all his visits, which you thanked since you didn't want to be on the watch list of his nutritionist
"All of this starting again and stuff, why?"
Golden eyes now watching into your very soul. One that was still yearning
"It's silly Bokuto-San...."
And what's best for the weak of heart than to let go? You're an adult after all, you should be able to talk about feelings and high-school crushes without feeling overwhelmed
"I liked you when we were at school so I wanted a fresh start, a new me that wouldn't be so head over heels for you" you tried to entone in a playful manner
Yeah that's it, this would give you the closure your heart needed
"ARE YOU KIDDING ME!?"
Was the slight exasperation from Bokuto's mouth
"H-huh?"
You were kinda used to his sudden outburst of energy, his expressions of sadness, pride everything else. But this, this was raw pain
His hands were gripping his hair, almost hurting the scalp. And you almost jump on your seat when he let out a heartbreaking whine
"I had the fattest crush on you since I met you" he then cursed softly and hid his face on his hands, his hair going automatically down
"I messed up, didn't I? Why would you be trying to fall out of me? Oh I swear to-" he continued his ramble, loud enough to scape through his fingers
"Bokuto-San"
You called once
"Bokuto"
Then twice
And at the third time his words were almost materializing in the air and clouding the view
"KĆtaro"
Oh that did the trick, his hands on his thighs and his full attention on you
"Y-yeah?"
Were those tears on his eyes? No, never mind, why did he ignored your confessions if he liked you too? You needed answers
"I think I was rather obvious back then, why didn't you say anything?"
His eyes widened once again and grimaced as he let his head hit the table
"I thought you were just being kind and nice" he turned his face and looked at you "Thought you liked Yaku, you know? He seemed more like your type than me" the last part said with a pout
And with the confusion resolved you giggled at you both's naiveness and placed your palm against his chin, taking his face away from the table
"Well, I never gave Yaku a love letter or a basket full of home made pastries for valentines"
"Oh" was his answer as he looked down to the floor with a sheepish expression
"Oh" You mirrored and left a tentative kiss on his cheek. A kiss that made him recover the color of his face and the glint of his eyes
"Is this another way to start again?"
"mmm?"
"Cuz I'd love to take you on a date"
Iwaizumi Hajime
"Iwa-chanIwa-chanIwa-chan"
"God dammit what do you want Oikawa?"
"Le gustabas a mi hermana cuando estĂĄbamos en el colegio"
"What the hell is that suppose to mean?!"
Ah yes, another day of Oikawa saying stuff to Iwaizumi in full spanish just to leave him hanging on the meaning. Typical Monday evening at the Oikawa household when he came to visit
"I might ruin your source of income for when you ruin your knees and shoulders"
"And that is?"
"Your face"
Oikawa faked a faint and rested his head on Iwa's shoulder
"Oh poor me with all my money, and my fans y los sobrinos que me hubieras dado si fueras mĂĄs atento"
"I swear to every good thing on heaven that if you don't tell me what on God's earth that means-"
"Hajime"
Bingo, you could answer his questions. You were Oikawa's little sister and when you finished high school you followed your brother steps to Argentina, being a tad bit more fluent than him even mastering the accent
"Is TĆru making fun of you again?" You giggled as you pushed your brothers face out of his bicep
Yeah, you were sweeter but still an Oikawa. A tease, a menace and the source of pain of his heart
Fuck the cliché of falling for your best friend's sibling. Iwaizumi swore to every deity it wasn't funny, might as well make him fall for a celebrity that studied in the same school, at least his delusions wouldn't be fed everyday
You teased the living lights out of him, but most of your shenanigans were directed at Oikawa so it was a weird alliance between the two of you.
And he couldn't help but hope. You didn't give home made meals to the whole team, just him.... And Oikawa, sometimes the whole Seijoh four.... Yeah that crosses it out
Or when you let him rest his head on your lap--Ah shit you did that with Kyotani once, mostly because his dog had died but nothing else
Hugs? You were physically affectionate with everyone and that just doubled when you went abroad
Special attention? You were basically the non official manager for them and the president of your class, you gave attention to everyone
Third year Iwaizumi concluded his attraction for you was a cruel destiny's game
At least he had your friendship
"I just need you to translate something your idiotic brother has been saying to me"
"Iwa-chan rude!"
"Ah the magic word Hajime"
Seriously?
"Ple-"
"No Hajime, how I taught you"
He just rolled his eyes but a smirk set on his lips
"Por favor"
Oikawa looked like that meme/gif cat who's in shock moving their face around as he hear the soft not so foreign words
"You little traitor you've been teaching him stuff!? IDIOTA!"
Iwaizumi lost your focus as you started bickering with Oikawa, until a tiny eeny secret was dropped
"Why do you care so much TĆru!?"
"I just told him you liked him!"
What. In Iwaizumi's voice
What. In your voice
Mierda. In Oikawa's voice
I'm kind of a sucker for this trope, when it's reciprocated is super cute (ïŸÂŽăź`) (tho I feel my writing in this is wack)
Iwa's it's a bit of crack but like, it just flowed jsjs
Hope you're still there anon and that you like this huhu

Flashback: Shinjuku Opera City (a week after the jubilee gala)
Click. Beep. beep. beep Your wristwatch mimicked a ticking time bomb right now. You breathe once to make sure you were still, for all intents and purposes, alive. The smell of the Sauvignon blanc laid in front of you was so heavenly, its grape-like aroma tempting you to take a sip but you couldnât, afraid that your body will just reject it in its current state of shock. You must have had a few too many earlier, your commoner palette not exactly used to the refreshing and crisp taste of white wine directly sourced from the rolling hills of Pouilly-Fume, and you must be hallucinating all this in your drunken stupor. Yes, all this was a hallucination, some sick naive dream you conjured after sharing a passing glance with the prince of the nation. It had to be, otherwise, why does it feel that your body has shut down? You were unable to move. Unable to speak. Unable to think.
And you were adamantly sure that you had also been rendered unable to breathe.
ââŠHuh?â That probably sounded stupid to your unlikely companions, well, normally it isnât that stupid if you havenât said that every five minutes or so during this fateful encounter. âThis is a mistake. You really want me to-?â
â-Yes,â he said immediately, his mother nodding alongside him. His finger glided across the rim of his scotch glass. He took it neat, of course, the Crown Prince is a man of good taste. âI can ask my people to help you move your belongings to a more dignified residence tomorrow morning.â
The empress frowned at Satoruâs backhanded comment about your way of life. âSatoru, youâre scaring her,â she whispered worriedly to her son.
âIf sheâs smart, sure,â Satoru hisseed under his breath. If he was going to propose to you and consequently marry you under his parentsâ orders, he was going to do it his way. âLook, MsâŠ?â he trails off, your name escaping him.
â(Y/N),â you provided. âMy name is (Y/N).â
He makes a soft âtchâ sound which goes unnoticed since you were too preoccupied in shaking away the haze of thoughts in your mind dimming your ability to think. He continues, âAs I was saying. Ms. (Y/N),â he puts emphasis on your name, etching the loathsome sound of it into his mind. âI havenât been completely honest with you.â
What did he mean by that? âExcuse me?â
âI know I said that I was just a fan when I sent you those flowers after your performance tonight but, I guess you could say Iâve become an admirer of yours.â
This was all scripted, and Satoru, despite having had a memory good enough to memorize has a good his entire family tree including the collateral branches before he even graduated from primary school, found the words getting stuck in his throat and he trailed off, his mind was filled to the brim with nothing but the face of the woman he is unwillingly betraying in the name of protecting his status.
But wasnât this what she wanted when she threw herself at the emperorâs feet that night? She was selflessly allowing him to go through with this despite knowing that every false tender word that he says to you would be a dagger to her heart, that every moment spent with you instead of her would make her cry a river of tears.
It feels as if this entire thing was a circus he had been forced into because his crown was hanging dangerously off the edge of the tightrope above him. Forced to perform, forced to act, forced to smile so that he wouldnât feel the sting of the whip his father, the ringleader, had in his hand. Wasnât that something Satoru has always done? How was this any different from all the elaborate ruses heâs been ordered to perform? Gojo involuntarily looks behind his seat, craning his head back, hoping to see the familiar figure of the love of his life standing exactly a meter away from him, just as sheâs always faithfully done, but that was all wishful thinking; Himiko had been removed from the duty of accompanying him tonight.
âI donât think Iâm just a fan,â he continues, turning his attention back to you, the words confessing his so-called love being uttered stoically. You stop him right there, the amount of bewilderment in your heart at a fatal maximum. His hand finds his pocket, searching for the godforsaken ring he is about to present to you. âAnd Iââ
ââYouâre just curious, Your Royal Highness,â you dismissed his so-called feelings with a shake of your head. âYouâve never been with someone outside your circle, and youâre curious about what it would be like to be involved with a commoner like me.â
When the words leave your lips, a stretch of panic washes over your face. Did you just disrespect the prince and the empress by doubting the sincerity of his words? Or did they disrespect you by treating you like a moron? Were you just supposed to believe that Prince Satoru had feelings for you? Your mind was spinning, and you were feeling a migraine aura beginning to form at your peripheral vision. You had to get out of there. Quickly moving the chair back so that you could stand up, you bow contritely to excuse yourself from the room. âMs. (Y/N), please wait!â the empress sighs exasperatedly when you leave the private dining room of the high-class restaurant, your heels clicking against the marble floor as you hurriedly see yourself out.
Perhaps, they were being too hasty for you to say âyesâ, too secretive about their true intentions. If they were to even have a chance of convincing you to marry Satoru, they have to let you in on the truth. Luckily, despite her age, the empress catches up to you just as you are about to hail a cab which was proving to be difficult since it was now past eleven oâclock and even the busy skyscraper district of Shinjuku was starting to look deserted.
âMs. (Y/N),â she breathes, stopping just a few feet from you. âPlease hear me out. Iâm sorry, this was a mistakeâŠâ
âIt's fine, Your Royal Highness, I know the Crown Prince doesnât like me the way he says he does. I may not be as highly educated as you but Iâm not an idiot.â
The empress looks on sadly. âWell,â she sighs, standing next to you. âI knew you would figure it out sooner or later. Still, Iâm really sorry for what happened back there.â
You donât respond for a long while, contemplating what to say; the air between you is one of awkwardness and somethingâs gotta give, otherwise, you and the empress would be standing in the middle of the empty street like total fools. You are the first to break, âYour Highness. Why me? And whatâs this really about?â
Why on earth were you chosen over so many other women in Tokyoâs most affluent families to become Prince Satoruâs wife? You expected that this so-called dinner would be nothing more than a courtesy call to thank the prince and the empress for visiting the last night of your show. One could only imagine the emotional whiplash you felt when the prince suddenly offered for you to become his wife which was totally unexpected considering you have never spoken a word to one another before. Just what kind of a messed up Shakespearean romantic tragedy did you wind up in? This entire thing felt like a work by some deranged author whoâs had one too many to drink while writing this poisoned manuscript of a love story.
âItâs exactly as the prince said,â she says succinctly. âThe prince isnât getting any younger and heâs in need of a wife. Thatâs what I would have told you if you were one of those shallow high society women Iâve had the displeasure of meeting.â The empress bitterly thinks about one specific girl that is so loathsome and vile that she has forcibly brought Satoru on the brink of total destruction. Last weekâs fiasco with the emperor was a warning shot, and knowing her husband, there wonât be a second time.
You frown, not liking it when people are purposefully brought down to compliment another. âIâm sure thatâs not true,â you mumbled, not really knowing what to say.
âBut it is,â the empress insists. âPeople who are born with everything have this tendency to think they are above everyone else. Maybe that was what caused the prince to become this way, because his own mother was born from nothing,â she chuckled.
Knowing that the prince was the only son she will ever be blessed with, having had him at the age of forty-one, she overindulged Satoru by giving him everything, and bending to his every will. So, Satoru grew up confident that heâd only have to point at a storefront window and his mother would get it for him, otherwise heâd throw a tantrum. Maybe thatâs whatâs going on â all the scandals, all the controversies â was this another one of Satoruâs tantrums because they refused to allow him to have a relationship with, much less marry, his chief-of-staff?
âNothing? I thought Your Highness, well before you married His Majesty, was an heiress to a car company. I donât think you should lump yourself in with us.â Those who were truly born from nothing, you thought to yourself.
The empress puts a hand over her mouth as her shoulders begin to shake as she giggles. âIs that so?â she laughs, reaching into her coat pocket, in search of something. Finally, she feels the familiar feel of the trinket she keeps with her day and night.
You expected her to pull out something more valuable than a five yen coin, and it looked like itâs an old one, judging by its rough and rust-stained edges. âSee this?â She carefully places the coin in her hand as if it were a precious item. âThis was the first ever money I ever had to my name at only eighteen years old. I couldnât bring myself to get rid of it even now,â she smiles wistfully as memories of her youth, albeit a simpler time away from the intrigue of the imperial court. She gently places the memento in your hand.
It was so light, it barely weighed a few grams yet it held so much of the empressâs heart in it, like a personal diary that has kept her company throughout the years, or perhaps it was a compass that led her to the path that resonated with her true self- the girl of only eighteen that had the look of a dreamer in her eyes, or maybe it was an anchor that served to keep her feet firmly planted on the humble ground in spite of her exalted status as the emperorâs consort.
You studied the coin. âOnly five yen?â Even you, a musician whose finances are scattered to the wind, could make more than five yen in less than an hour. You were confused. Was this another one of their tricks to get you to say yes? No, it couldnât be, seeing as how the empress seemed so genuine now, almost like the conversation you were having was like a mother and daughter having a heartfelt chat.
The empress nods. âI was a store clerk at a music shop when I was young. It was the only way I could save up and go to college. Of course, this was all before my father invented that powerhouse of an automobile when he was tinkering around with a few of the customerâs cars in the mechanic shop he ran.â
Listening intently to the empressâs story, a sense of solidarity seemed to grow between you and her. âAnd this was your first salary? Hard to believe music shops pay so little back then.â
âNo, no. That was a tip I received from a customer when I returned her wallet. She left it in the shop and I ran after her. Of course if I were a thief, I would have taken off with it, but it was completely empty.â That caused you to laugh. Who knew that the empress who always carried herself with poise and dignity had such a deadpan sense of humor? âSo, she gave me the only coin in the wallet to thank me. A five yen coin. Since then, Iâve kept this with me at all times. Call it an old ladyâs sentimental ramblings, but this is what keeps me from letting all this get to my head.â
You nod in understanding. But what did this beautiful story have to do with marrying Satoru? The empress senses the question before you could even form words to ask it.
âWhat Iâm saying is that Satoru was my outlet,â she sulked. âMy second chance. So I gave him everything his little heart could ever want. And as a mother I know it was wrong of me to raise him to think heâs above everything and everyone.â She didnât actively do that, though. Satoru just developed that toxic kind of thinking somewhere down the line. âIâm sure youâve heard the nasty things they say about my son.â
The atmosphere suddenly turns sullen. You remembered how you watched in horror when Prince Satoru appeared on your TV screen the morning after the jubilee gala. You normally saw the prince attending royal functions such as groundbreaking and ribbon-cutting ceremonies, and while you are aware, just like everyone else in the country, that Satoru had his own share of misfits, you dismissed it as the actions of a rebellious young adult. You never thought for one second that you would see the prince battering a man until he was closer to death than a rat caught in a mousetrap outside of a shady gambling den in an unsavory district in Tokyo.
âIâm pretty sure the press is stretching the truth at times.â That was the right thing to say, you didnât want to badmouth her son in front of her.
She scoffs humorlessly. âIâm not asking you to defend him. What Iâm asking of you is to help him.â She takes your hand in hers. âMs. (Y/N), this marriage may start out as a publicity stunt, but you could turn into something better than that.â
Maybe youâd fall in love with the prince, and maybe he could open his heart to love another again, someone who was healthier for him than Himiko. While the disbelief in your face was clear, the empressâs words give you a sense of hope but again, being excused from this narrative was what you wanted more than anything. âI think you overestimate my power, Your Highness. What you are asking of me will only end badly, Iâm sure of it. Itâll be a disaster for everyone.â
Looks like there was no convincing you. A lot seems to be going on inside the empressâs head and you sympathized with her anxiety, but this was something you couldnât do. You have been what people call a âpushoverâ your entire life, but the subject of your marriage is critically non-negotiable.
âI understand,â the empress is now resigned to her sonâs fate. It seems, after all that song and dance in front of the emperor, it was all futile in the end. At this rate, this time tomorrow, the son of the empressâs unwilling mistress would probably be declared heir apparent and she would be powerless to stop it.
âIâm sorry, itâs just my mother taught me that marriage is sacred and that I should never mess around with it. You could have asked me for anything, Your Highness, and I would have said âyesâ in a heartbeat.â
âYour mother seems like a very wise woman,â the empress smiles softly. âAnd sheâs very lucky to have you as her daughter.â
You stiffened at that. âIâŠI wouldnât know if she feels that way, really.â
A wave of confusion crashes over the empress. What did you mean? âSorry?â she clarifies. You hesitate to let her in on your own pain and you feel a slight prick of guilt poking your heart. She had been so vulnerable tonight, so open with you about her grief while you guarded yours in a titanium safe. She decides not to push the subject further and instead places a hand over yours comfortingly before turning to leave.
A thought occurs in your head and everything seems to slow down. The cars passing by the main avenue of Nishi-Shinjuku seemed to be running at 10 mph instead of the roadâs minimum 20 mph. The billboards towering over you have momentarily lagged like some fatal error occurred in the LCD screen.
âŠThis was wrong, you shouldnât even be thinking of this.
...What would make you any different from a bloodsucking gold-digger?
âŠDonât run after her.
She wouldnât want you to do this. It would kill her if you did this. But havenât you killed her many times before? What would make this time any different? Absolutely nothing. Your mind is made up.
âŠ
âYour Highness, please wait.â
6:12 AM.
You didnât know that the smell of flowers could be so vile and revolting.
Sat in the middle of a room with about a hundred bouquets of flowers from a multitude of well-wishers, at six in the morning on the day of your wedding, you gaze up at the huge mural of your new residence in the imperial palace. The pupils of your eyes followed each image on the vast painted ceiling which, compared to your tiny Tokyo apartment, felt like the entire sky altogether. Your eyes follow the image painted by Kanà Eitoku depicting life in the old seat of the imperial system, Kyoto, each blink of your eyes, you hone in on a new aspect of the mural: the mountain of Ryëgatake, the old imperial palace which you were told still existed today, the grasslands surrounding the ancient capital, and the people of Kyoto as they go about their daily lives.
If only those people could speak and were not just plastered images on a lifeless cement canvas to keep you company, maybe you wonât feel as lonely having had to wait for your wedding day to roll by without your husband-to-be by your side.
Sighing, you fall against the carpeted floor, your hands clutching a greeting card from one of your friends who gushed about how you had suddenly become a princess-to-be overnight and how you must be so happy to be engaged to such a handsome man that is prince Satoru Gojo. You hold back your tears, your fingernails digging into the vellum card.
Youâve given up calling the Imperial Household Agency to connect the line to Satoru, they come up with a different ruse each time. âPlease, I need to speak to the Crown Prince,â you would sniffle into the lineâs speaker desperately.
âHis Royal Highness is busy right now in his office.â
âMy apologies, Ms. (Y/N), but Prince Satoru is unavailable right now due to [insert name of engagement which is perfectly-timed with the wedding consultations heâs supposed to attend with you here].â
âPrince Satoru is currently away to inaugurate the new building for [insert any imperial charity foundation here].â
But you know all those so-called reasons for his absence were lies, excuses to keep their future consort from overthinking where her distant fiancĂ© could be. Come to think of it, you havenât seen Himiko around either, that alone should be enough to answer the lingering questions in your head about Satoruâs whereabouts. It wasnât as if you could suddenly act like some jealous spouse when 1.) You arenât married yet. 2.) You are the trespasser in their relationship. 3.) You are simply a bandage solution to clean up the princeâs image, someone who had unknowingly been at the right place at the right time. You are well aware of where you stand in the grand scheme of things; that kiss as you drove out of the palace compound that day should have been a good enough reminder that you will never truly be your future husbandâs better half.
That title, the one you unwittingly stole from a woman youâve never even met before, is something you can never truly call your own. You were no different than the typical other woman who would wear the legal wifeâs wedding dress like some thief.
Yet how is it that you know all of these things like scripture but you still spent the entire night crying over a man who finds it physically impossible to be in the same room as you? Why did it hurt so much when you saw your fiancé shield his girlfriend from the autumn chill the same way you hoped he would shield you from the many challenging questions during that press conference? Why does it feel like a dagger had been plunged into your chest when you saw Himiko kiss Satoru so tenderly, and your husband-to-be returning the gesture with equal fervor?
You lay on your side, the velvet texture of the carpet somehow providing you some semblance of comfort. What would your retainers say when they come into this room and see the crumpled form of their future empress on the floor, her knees hugged to her chest as she tries to make sense of everything that has happened these past few days? You imagined that theyâd probably think you were crazy, and Satoru would probably jeer at the thought of having a simpleton as a wife.
You were only a girl of twenty-three summers, you should be enjoying your twenties by doing the things that you love with the people you love. These sunny days of youth pass by in the blink of an eye, but in your case, you have been totally robbed of it, now being primed to become not just a princess but a wife too. While the former is certainly an intimidating role, the latter is just downright petrifying for someone as young as yourself.
Not a single soul save for the empress went to check up on you last night, the only people you were expecting to keep you company today are the hairdressers and makeup artists to prepare you for the wedding. Of course, the austere members of the Imperial Household Agency are also set to make an appearance in your chambers today probably to make you sit through another briefing session on court etiquette. You glance out the window, it was barely light out due to the winter equinox when nights are longer than daytime, and somehow that made you even more sad than you already were laying down on the floor of your room, desolately alone.
A knock at the door awakens you from your trance and you sit up, arranging your hair neatly and pulling on your shoes. Sighing, you make your way towards the door and see someone who you do not quite expect. He momentarily shifts his attenton to the battalion of attendants behind him, nodding to them. âLeave us alone.â
âYour Majesty, good morning,â your breath hitches in your throat as you hastily bow your head before the emperor who seemed to be more anxious about this day more than you, seeing as he is already dressed in his three piece suit and slacks ensemble with the Collar of the Supreme Order of the Chrysanthemum hanging between his lapels.
The emperor was an enigmatic figure who mostly kept to himself, his chamberlain and main staff often joking amongst themselves how the emperor was really a recluse who had only been born to become the sovereign ruler of a nation by an unfortunate stroke of fate. Your future father-in-law hums in acknowledgement and you are left to wonder if this is where Satoru gets his aloof nature from. âGood morning, (Y/N). May I come in?â he asks as if this entire compound wasnât his.
âOf course, Your Majesty.â
He eyes the many bouquets in the room, sighing heavily as he does, the guilt of putting you in this impossible position weighing on him. He admits that he jumped the gun when the empress offered to have Satoru marry someone who could brighten up his public image from the many blemishes it incurred during the night of the jubilee when he and Himiko were seen together, causing trouble in the casinos of the infamous KabukichĆ red light district.. To have you bear the weight of becoming a lamb to the slaughter with this marriage was just downright cruel, knowing that his son will certainly make it his lifeâs purpose to destroy you, but what choice did he have?
It is the crown that makes the choice for him, heâs been told by his own father.
âListen, do you have the slightest idea of what youâre about to go through?â the man whom you would call your father-in-law in just a few hours asks flatly.
Of course you do, Satoru has already given you a taste of what your marriage is going to be like. You solemnly nod âI think so,â murmuring softly, crestfallenness is evident in your voice. âSatoru has made it clear.â
The emperor purses his lips as he fumbles with a tulip that had been nestled in one of the bouquets in your chambers, âWell, itâs good that you know. I know my son and I am not here to tell you that everything youâve seen these past couple of days will get better,â he eyes the telephone, one you havenât even placed the phone back onto the handset in hopes that Satoru would call you. âIn fact, itâs only going to get worse from here.â
You frown, crestfallen. âHow so?â you asked, your hand gripping the fabric of your dress. âAre you saying that this is just the beginning?â Truthfully, you were fine with this being the beginning, only if you could have the reassurance that all this will come to an eventual end. But it seems now that this was going to be life as you know it, with a husband who gags at the sight of you and has the innate ability to treat you like you were his personal bedwarmer and doormat.
âYes,â the emperor says gravely, a dark look crossing his features. âSo if youâd like to back out now, now is your only chance. Satoru has made enough messes, a canceled wedding will barely do anything to his reputation at this point.â
Heâs right; these past days have only proved that Satoru is probably granting you a way out, maybe thatâs why he has done nothing else but to ignore you as a final act of mercy if you ever decide to bail. One tiny kiss on the cheek is nothing when he starts to go missing in the middle of the night to attend to his mistressâs beck and call, when he starts to bring home his mistress for dinner to actively spite you with their relationship, or when he, god forbid, starts fucking in her in your marital bed while youâre away on some royal function.
You could live a full life without him, having barely even known him save for his proclivity to emotionally torment you, but it feels wrong to justâŠup and leave after all that song and dance in the press opportunity.l Shaking your head, the emperorâs offer is refused insistently.
âIâm not going to give up on him, I wonât give up on our marriage before it even begins,â your eyes bore into the emperorâs own. Youâve promised yourself and the empress that youâll see this through, if Satoru is going to make your life a living hell, then, youâll just have to take all his blows like a champ.
âI donât doubt your willpower, (Y/N). Iâm just saying that this might be even more difficult for you than you think,â the emperor warns. âSatoru doesnât just push back, heâll run over people who get in his way.â
âYour Majesty, itâe alright. Iâll manage somehow.â you mumbled. âThe empress and I made an agreement that if I marry Satoru, IâŠâ you trail off, not really wanting to reveal more than you should, the emperor waits for you to continue, his eyebrows furrowed together.
What would you get if you married Satoru if not unnecessary suffering? And even then, that didnât sound like a good deal, the emperor thinks to himself. You could have gone on happily with your life, blissfully unaware of the trials of being married to the white-haired prince, you probably would have continued climbing the career ladder before finding someone to settle down with, maybe youâll have a few kids along the way, and Satoru would also be blissfully unaware of a certain (Y/N) (L/N) existing on this plane of reality with him.
Why were you so committed to marrying him?
âIâd be able toâŠâ you stutter. There was no use hiding it now but maybe you could conceal the truth a little longer, if not for your sake, but for the empress â no, a grieving mother â who met you in a hotel cafĂ© that night with the weight of the world on her shoulders and asked you to keep the details of this transactional union a secret. âI wouldâŠâ
The emperor raises a hand to stop you, though he is mildly perturbed at your hesitance to open up to him, he decides that whatever you and his wife were keeping from him does not concern him or the throne and that it is simply a thing that should be left unsaid. He really didnât want to pry into the details of the contract you agreed to, and since you seem to have already made up your mind, all he could do now is hope that you do not give up so easily on his son the same way he did, and that this choice to marry Satoru would not backfire on you or the imperial system in the long run.
âStop. I understand,â the emperor nods, his shoulders seemingly slumping in defeat as he is unable to convince you to cut it and run from the horrible fate you were speeding towards at a hundred miles an hour. Maybe Satoru was right to make you out to be an idiot, the emperor frowns. âButâŠdonât say I didnât warn you, and from the bottom of my heart, I wish you all the best.â
And just like that, the wedding pushes through as scheduled, having declared before the father of the groom that you werenât one to give up so easily, orâŠmaybe itâs just your blind optimism talking.
âThank you, Your Majesty,â you settle into an ornate curtsy, your foot gracefully tucked behind the other, your hand postured in a cordial handshake with His Majesty. The emperorâs pupils dilate, his mouth runs dry and he feels like something in his body had momentarily stopped working or had broken entirely â he knows that trademark act of obeisance so well â youâve perfectly captured the image of a younger version of his wife who had perfected royal protocol in just under a year when they got married. She must have sought to teach you everything she knew or rather she was forced to learn by herself when she was in your position in an act of true esprit de corps. And for a moment, he finds himself surrendering to your doe-eyed but unmistakably poised charm, and he starts to become more convinced that you were a worthy future daughter-in-law.
He shakes his head, swiftly snapping him out of his trance, now was not the time for these things. The emperor nods back to return the gesture before turning to leave, just as your attendants are about to arrive to get you ready for the ceremony. âWeâll see you in the cathedral, then, (Y/N).â
But as soon as he is halfway out the door, he turns back to look at you one last time as (Y/N) (L/N), for the next time he will see you, you will then be (Y/N) Gojo, his first daughter-in-law, the first royal bride in centuries who neither hails from a family of politicians nor influential persons alike, the icon of a new chapter for the imperial family.
He sighs, turning back around to face you, having almost forgotten the task heâd been entrusted with by his wife. âI almost forgot. Ijichi,â he calls to his faithful grand steward who is waiting outside your chambers to bring forth a rather special gift he and the empress intended to present to you after the ceremony but he figured now might be a good time. The tall, lanky and sickly-looking spectacled man known as Ijichi bows before you which leaves a strange feeling festering within you, he was carrying a navy blue felt case that seemed so valuable that he had been compelled to wear gloves to prevent his bare hands from touching the fine fabric.
The emperor motions to open the case and your face pales when you see what is inside. âThis is intended to be worn by the Princess Royal on her wedding day but since I donât have a daughter to give that title to, the title will now belong to you.â
The tiara in his hands is a hefty thing, molded entirely from the most of valuable of silvers, it resembled the Queen Mary Fringe Tiara that had been worn by Her Majesty Queen Elizabeth II on her wedding day, with an abundance of baton diamonds dotting every conceivable nook and cranny. It takes some time for you to adjust when it is placed upon your head, it only weighed a modest 1.7 kilograms, it was much lighter than the many tiaras the family keeps hidden away in the imperial vaults but for someone like you, it is an awfully heavy thing not just in the literal sense but also in the figurative side of things.
As of this moment, you werenât just an ordinarily forgettable face in a crowd anymore.
âCarry the weight.â The emperorâs voice is commandeering. He steps back, scanning how the tiara looks on you from afar and though it looked awkwardly placed on your head with how you are struggling to balance its weight, you still managed to carry it adequately. âNowâŠyouâre one of us.â
8:55 AM.
âNeed some help?â
Satoru looks up to inspect the reflection on the mirror and a sad smile crosses his face when he sees the familiar figure of Himiko leaning against the doorframe, her arms crossed over her chest as she gazes at her beloved getting ready for his wedding day. âYou donât have to be here.â He begrudgingly fumbles with his collar, unable to meet her eyes. âI donât want you to get hurt,â he professes, despite having immeasurably hurt you these past couple of days instead.
Himiko shakes her head. There was no use in grumbling about it now when just on the other side of the palace, Satoruâs unworthy bride-to-be was being pampered by her many ladies with manicures, foot massages, and practically anything to make you happy while she, the princeâs true love, was condemned to watch him be cruelly given away to someone else. There was a sense of finality with how hundreds of palace staff rushed through the hallways carrying all sorts of wedding paraphernalia to decorate the Chowaden reception hall and the courtyard to welcome the wedding guests.
Satoru frowns when her hands find his collar, she skillfully untangles the ribbon medal and readjusts the silver emerald-studded necklace that came with it.
PleaseâŠjust one more minuteâŠone more minute with you, Satoru closes his eyes as Himikoâs thumbs tentatively rub his chiseled cheek as if she were memorizing every bump and every curve of his skin before someone else tries to claim that they know every bit of Satoru inside and out. She knows it will never be true, no one can ever know Satoru the way she intimately knows him, not even if he was going to marry another woman. It may be possible for you steal everything from her â the emperor and empressâs favor, the publicâs warm approval, the ring that had been fitted to accommodate the size of her finger before it was given to you â it may have been easy for you to pull the rug from underneath her, but it would be difficult â no, impossible â for you to ever claim ownership of Satoru.
He was hers and she was his, Satoru leans against Himikoâs touch, sighing woefully. âIâll make her pay, I promise. Iâll break her, destroy her again. And again. And again until nothingâs left of her,â he recites the promise, punctuating the words with a kiss every time, as if they were having an illicit wedding of their own, and his words were a marriage vow â the only one that he will honor with every fiber of his being. Himiko bites her lower lip before she slowly nods, appeased.
âBut Satoru, marrying her is the only way for you to be restored as heir apparent. Either way, we canât win without doing this your fatherâs way.â Her hands leave his collar and she sadly gazes out the window, her narrow eyes glazing over the ancient ginkgo tree at the center of the palaceâs vast atrium which was now shedding their green leaves to take on the tell-tale yellow hue as autumn draws near. She always loved the view of the palace courtyard from above, especially in this room where she and Satoru spent many nights proving their love for one another.
Gojo frowns at her melancholia, he comes up from behind her, wrapping his arms around her waist. âIâll think of something, I promise this wonât last longer than it needs to,â he kisses her cheek, nuzzling it with his nose tenderly.
âI donât mind waiting, Satoru, Iâd wait for you forever, and as much as we both hate her, we need (Y/N),â she spits out your name as if it were rat poison in her mouth. âSo, letâs just play along. Itâs not like weâre not used to meeting in deserted parking lots at midnight, right?â She offers him a half-smile, reminding Satoru that their entire affair has always been illicit in nature.
Itâs not like she was accepted by his parents to be their sonâs future consort. Theyâve been through this before, hundreds of times rather, even before you came along. Theyâve had to deal with so many forces ripping them apart over the past three years from the oh-so-omnipotent emperor who hardly wields any political power to his neurotic wife whom she has called, on several occasions, a bitch.
And yet, together they remained as it has always been, with Satoru cradling Himiko in his arms as he peppers kisses up her neck, sucking at the soft flesh, his hips flush against hers. He does this in front of the window for any unfortunate passerby to see. Hell, Satoru was hoping youâd walk by and see this heartbreaking display and maybe youâll just run home in your wedding dress with your tail between your legs.
âWe donât have to get used to it, Himiko,â he mumbles into her neck, inhaling her sweet perfume, the one he liked the most. âOne day, we wonât have to hide anymore,â he kisses her cheek tenderly, caressing the bone of her wrists which still bore faint marks from the handcuffs that had been wrongfully placed on her with his thumb. âAnd people can say whatever they want about us, and it wouldnât matter because I will have been the emperor by then and you, my empress.â He presses their foreheads together, the tips of their noses barely touching in a moment of silence.
After a long while, Satoru lets go of Himiko, his eyes scanning hers as if he were searching for answers hidden deep within her soul. âWhat is it?â
âI just wish you hadnât stepped in back there.â It was a thought that kept him awake these past agonizing nights. âMaybe if you just stayed out of my fatherâs office, this wouldnât have happened. I was alright with you visiting me in my jail cell, you know.â
âAs if Iâd ever let that happen,â she sighs when he pulls away to fasten his cufflinks, suddenly feeling a bit disheartened at the loss of his touch. She kisses his cheek, looking at his reflection through the mirror, her eyes alight with adoration. âI promised Iâd always be your ally, didnât I?â
When she and Satoru first met three years ago in the selection for his chief-of-staff, Himiko Zenin, despite coming from the affluent Zenin clan, lagged behind compared to her contenders who aced the exams that tested their knowledge on the law, constitution, history of the imperial system, royal protocol, foreign languages and other aspects that may prove useful for the princeâs right hand. But there was one thing that she had that all the other applicants didnât have, and she demonstrated that perfectly when Satoru unexpectedly dropped by during the final interviews to speak to each of the candidates himself.
Satoru stared at Himiko with a bored expression that day, his being devoid of any emotion. âMs. Zenin, it seems you did poorly in all of the exams,â he glances at her file which should have been tossed in the bin by the time she placed last in the jurisprudence exam. âAnd youâre affiliated with one of the more morally ambiguous families in the country. Looks like todayâs just not your day, huh?â
It was true. Having Himiko Zenin as his chief of staff was dangerous from the get-go. The Zenin clanâs head back then during the time of the selection was on trial for graft and corruption. But, there was something Himiko had that all the other applicants did not. At the time, he couldnât quite put a finger on it but now, after years of selfless service to him, Satoru realizes that it was the ferocious loyalty that hid underneath her then perfectly ordinary shell which he personally refined into the gem of a woman she is now, and she never swore allegiance to the crown but rather to him, Satoru Gojo.
âBut, Iâll indulge you,â he reclined against his chair that day, his arms crossed. âWhy should I even consider you as my chief of staff? What can you offer me that the others before you cannot?â
Her answer to that question instantly won him over and in that instant, Himikoâs life had changed forever. âWhatever you ask of me, Your Royal Highness, Iâd give my very life for you.â
Satoru turns away from the mirror, his lips instantly on hers. His hand dangerously hovered over the hem of her dress. âS-Satoru, what are you doing?â she moans into his mouth as Satoru moves both of them to the bed, he climbs atop of her as she lay on the mattress, her locks splayed over the silk sheets. She knows what heâs doing, this was almost like a film she has seen many times before; this was how tense conversations with Gojo go with him impatiently parting her legs, their hands desperately discarding their clothes until they are left utterly bare before one another.
He wanted to destroy you the same way you destroyed what he had with Himiko. This anger translated into his rough pace. He roughly jostles his hips against Himikoâs, her arms wrapping around him as he buries his cock inside her, his lips covering her milky flesh with dark-purplish bruises, marking her as his.
Call him a sadist but he hopes that Himiko would change into a dress that could flaunt her marked skin so that when you fearfully look around the cathedral, warily searching for her, your heart would break at the sight of the countless hickeys on her neck and collar. He wanted to see you cry the first of the many tears you will shed for the crime of marrying him.
âSatoruâŠ!â she cries out as the luscious feeling of his girth pistoning in and out of her. He grunts as he feels him inch closer and closer to his high. âMmphââToru,â she whines when he reangles his hips, plunging deeper into her, his arms locking behind hers as he violently chases his release. Heâs so close. âI love you, I love youâŠ-a-ah!â
A symphony of pleasured groans falls from his lips, his very being uncoiling as he cums. His hips involuntarily keep thrusting as hot spurts of his cum drips down Himikoâs entrance, mixing with her own release. Himiko frowns as Satoru clicks his tongue at the soiled sheets beneath their connected forms. He groans as he pulls out, sinking into the warmth of her embrace, his still hardened cock poking her inner thigh. âPromise me youâll only love me?â she whispers as her fingers absentmindedly play with his white hair.
âI promise,â Gojo murmurs into the crook of her neck as he lulled to sleep by her soft, even breaths. âI promise itâs only youâŠno one else.â
11:45 AM.
Only half an hour left. A crowd of, from what you have heard, 70,000 have gathered on the strip of the main road that the bridal car will pass en route to the cathedral.
âItâs true,â your maid of honor who people refer to as Ieiri says, showing you her phone which showed the many tweets from news agencies, famous personalities and normal people alike about how excited they were to witness your wedding day. There were countless social media posts consisting of yours and Satoruâs official engagement picture and many have taken to hosting their own live-streaming sessions of this monumental day.
âEveryoneâs so excited. I wish my wedding would be this big,â one of your bridesmaids sighs dreamily. You manage a small chuckle at her, maybe if she knew of your plight right now, she would probably be eating those words alongside the many petit fours sheâs been munching on this past hour. âLook at all those people,â she continues scrolling through her phone.
âItâs the first televised imperial wedding so obviously, itâs a big deal, Riko,â Utahime laughs. âNot to mention, itâs the first time a member of the imperial family would be married in a Western-themed ceremony.â For everyone to see.
One of your newly appointed helpers enters the room, and jogs over to you as quickly as she can in her heels, she has a small jewelry box delicately decorated in an ecru gift wrapper in her hand. âMs. (Y/N), this is from the prince. His butler told me to give this to you.â Youâve been sad all day and your ladies-in-waiting heave a sigh of relief when they see a hint of a smile on your face, even if it did hold a bit of apprehension.
âReally? For me?â You stand up to accept the small token, careful not to ruffle your wedding dress too much as per the dressmakerâs instructions since the fabric used to construct the piece was susceptible to crumpling. Momentarily setting your phone down on the vanity table mid-text, you graciously accept the wedding gift. Maybe Satoru was starting to warm up to you and that he is now chipping away at the wall he built between the two of you. You hoped that by sending you this gift, this would be the start of something new and better with your husband.
But given how things are, that would be impossible. This was probably just a gift he sent to appease you after many days of effectively acting like you donât exist.
You open the box and your ladies chatter around you excitedly. âItâs so pretty!â the youngest of your bridesmaids, the daughter of the Japanese ambassador to France apparently, marvels at the pair of earrings. Briefly smiling at her, you then turn your attention to the small letter that was neatly slotted between the groove of the boxâs padded interior that held the earrings in place. His handwriting was so conscientiously beautiful that it almost looked like a computer-generated font, there wasnât a hint of clumsiness in each stroke.
âTo (Y/N),
Iâm sorry about these past few days. This wonât make up for it, but, Iâd like to join you in wishing for a successful marriage together.
â HRH Satoru Gojoâ
Your heart slows at the cold closing. He had omitted the words âloveâ and âsincerelyâ before his name, but you expected that. If scraps of affection are all you could ever hope to get out of him, you have to learn to deal with it sooner or later; this was your life now, you will always be second to the love of his life. It must have taken everything out of him, and it must have caused an argument to erupt between him and Himiko, to send you this and you understand that heâs also having a difficult time with how things are now but it mattered so much to you to see him try. Regardless if this gift was given to you freely or not, you couldnât refuse it, even if every voice in your head was screaming at you, reminding you of the horrific scene you saw that day when you caught your fiancĂ© kissing another woman out in the open immediately after you announced your engagement.
âWould you like me to put it on you?â Riko asks. âIâm sure the prince will be happy to see you wear these.â
âYou really think so?â you wince when your helper struggles to find your earlobe piercing. âI didnât know he could be so sweet.â Thatâs obviously a lie; you know full well Satoru could be sweet, it just pained you to remember that heâs capable being sweet to another deliberately causing you immense grief. Your helper stiffens slightly. She has seen him become sweet before, albeit to another, but she didnât have to divulge any details and accidentally ruin your wedding day.
She nods shyly, succeeding with the first diamond earring and then the other. She steps away from the mirror. You looked radiant. âY-yes.â
Noticing her discomfort, you expertly steer the conversation elsewhere. âI see. Well I should probably return the favor.â
Youâve gotten Satoru a wristwatch you and the empress had personally had commissioned by a famed watchmaker that could rival the craftsmanship of a Rolex. It just arrived last night and well, given your current mental state then having taken the brunt of Satoruâs ire the past few days, you couldnât bring yourself to wrap it. Momentarily deciding if you still had time to have one of your helpers buy some wrapping paper, you realized it would be cutting it too close so you hastily scribbled on a blank dedication card you randomly plucked from one of the bouquets you received. Luckily, some of them had extra cards.
âTo Your Royal Highness,
Please donât apologize, Iâm sorry too for being pushy lately. Thank you for the gift, Iâll be sure to take good care of it. Happy wedding day, and Iâm looking forward to better days together!
Wholeheartedly yours,
(Y/N) (L/N)â
Reading through it one last time, you affix your name at the end. âYou guys are so sweet,â your youngest bridesmaid gushes as she presses a button on the roomâs telephone to request for a butler. âIâm sure the prince will love it.â
âWhatever âsweetâ means.â You grimace, your unease getting the better of you. A few moments later, a butler peeks into the room. You bound over to him, placing the present in his hands. âCould you please give this to Prince Satoru?â you asked him and the butler looks slightly bewildered at your choice of words. If it was an order, you could have just said so. Perhaps you were still getting used to the idea of having people waiting to attend to your every beck and call.
âRight away, maâam,â the butler replies obediently nonetheless. âAlso I ran into His Majestyâs chamberlain just a while back and he asked me to remind you of the time. Everythingâs ready,â he informs you just as he turns to leave in the direction of the palaceâs east wing where Satoru's private chambers are. Upon hearing that, the bridal entourage starts to get ready to leave ahead of you, theyâll be going to the venue with a separate convoy from the brideâs since youâll be driving through some of Tokyoâs major avenues en route to the cathedral.
You watch as they file out of the room in their cream dresses, each one of them, despite having known you for only a little less than half a day, pull you into a bone-crushing hug wishing you well. âCongratulations, (Y/N).â
âThank you,â you kindly smiled at each one of them as they left.
When you are left alone to your devices, you take one last look at (though you could hardly recognize yourself) the mirror, swallowing harshly, your hand absentmindedly playing with the locket which you continued to wear, ignoring the gracious advice of the Imperial Household Agencyâs grand steward to set it aside for todayâs festivities as it was uncustomary for royal brides to wear articles of clothing and accessories that did not hold any relation to the imperial family.
Only thirty minutes to go âtill everything changes. Wait no, that was grossly inaccurate. Everything changed the split second you laid your eyes on him. Since then, everything seems to be a jumbled haze like some sort of psychedelic trance that just wonât end. Reaching for your phone one last time, you hastily search for a particular contact number, your finger hovering over the call button. No, thereâs no point, you sniffle softly. Calling her would only make things harder than it already is and backing out of this now is out of the question.
Another knock is heard on the door, but it isnât as insistent as the first few ones as everyone was starting to get a bit frustrated at you. Did they think you were stalling for time? âJust a minute,â your voice wavers. You just received a new text message from the number you were planning to call.
âWeâll be moving her in a few hours. Will send you her new room number when we get there.â
Bringing the phone to your lips, your heart makes somersaults in your chest when you receive the news. The sacrifice you were still yet to make has already paid off and your ledger of personal favors crossed out with a red marker effectively completing your transaction with the empress. Without even giving you time to text a quick âthank youâ, another urgent knock is heard on the door. âMs. (Y/N), Iâm very sorry to interrupt but, we should get going now.â
âIâll be right there,â you said again, quickly typing another message on your phone: âI wish I was there with her. Please hold her hand for me.â The second it goes through, you quickly shuffled towards the door, your head bowed in apology. You hold your breath as you balance the tiara on your head hoping that it wonât fall as it hangs precariously off-center on the crown of your head, your eyes trained on the ground as the door slides open. âSorry about that.â
âNo worries, Iâm pretty patient. Ijichi, on the other hand? Not so much.â
His voice is feather-soft and melodious like a harp string being plucked delicately so that it produces a clear and deep bell-like sound, the very language he chooses to speak with is devoid of neither a shrill nor sharp word unlike the fusillade of orders youâve been mercilessly bombarded with this entire day. Walk like this, speak like that, donât do this, and most certainly never do that, you must have gone through a decadeâs worth of rules and regulations to follow during the ceremony and even after youâve said your âI doââs. Still, you found solace knowing that Satoru is slowly warming up to the idea of cooperating with you, and has even found it in his heart to give you an olive branch of sorts which was now hooped through your earlobes, sparkling under the light like a clear drop of water from the sky.
At first, you naively think itâs him. Did Satoru really come over to see you? While that seemed uncharacteristic of him, the very thought of him voluntarily visiting you planted a sense of relief in you regardless. Maybe he wanted to settle things before the ceremony, to be upfront with you about his intentions in this marriage, how the two of you will be towards one another going forward, and if your luck holds out, maybe heâd finally let you in on his acts of impropriety with Himiko.
But, you would recognize Satoruâs indifferent timbre anywhere, this voice was far too different and seemed much kinder and softer than your fiancĂ©âs.
You slowly open the door to greet your guest, confirming your suspicions as you meet the gaze of a man you havenât met before. He seems severely unfamiliar.
No, wait. That canât be it, he may seem unfamiliar but heâs definitely recognizable. In fact, youâve seen him a few times before, standing feebly next to your fiance during the emperorâs birthday broadcast. Then, it clicks. Wasn't thisâŠ?
âCrown Prince Suguru?â you blinked. Heâs the only senior member of the imperial family that youâve never been officially introduced to. Of course, you are on speaking terms with the emperor, the empress and of course, Satoru, but never the prince that idly lingered in their large shadows.
The raven-haired man chuckles deeply at your shocked expression. Clearly, you didnât expect to meet him under these circumstances, and that caused you to accidentally refer to him as the Crown Prince when that title only belonged to Gojo. He looks at you endearingly, finding you intriguing.
So this was the woman his younger brother is to be married to. Suguru has heard a lot about Satoruâs docile bride-to-be, in fact, he received news of the engagement while he was in Rome, the last leg of his first solo tour in Europe. People were so quick to label it as a pivotal point in the history of the Japanese monarchy and that you are the symbol of change, specifically, they likened you to a camellia blooming in a sea of chrysanths, a breath of spring in the imperial familyâs everwinter â alluring in every sense of the word. But, alluring isnât exactly a word heâd use to describe you seeing as youâve only just met but, right now, he found you to be so adorably cute that he might just start to believe the things they say about you on the news.
âItâs just Prince Suguru. Satoruâs the Crown Prince.â The gentle correction makes you so flustered that you feel blood rush up to your ears, a tell-tale sign of your abasement. âBut you could just call me Suguru.â
âOh, right, my mistake,â you rub your eyelid, growing embarrassed. âPrince Suguru,â you stressed his correct title, remedying your earlier mishap. Despite you being in heels, you canât see past him, given that he towered over you so easily so you stand on your tallest tiptoes, trying to peek over his shoulder. âYou havenât happened to see Mr. Ijichi, have you? He was right outside the door a few minutes ago.â
Suguru buries his hands in his pockets. âHe just left, youâre welcome,â he winks at you, having sent Ijichi on his way when he accidentally stumbled across him furiously tapping on your door as he was making his way to his car.
Ijichi wasâŠdifficult to get along with â heâs short-fused, demanding at some times, and he is what people could call a stickler for the rules â Suguru isnât doesnât really want to say nasty words about his fatherâs grand steward and heâd give credit where itâs due since Ijichi is not just efficient when it comes to running the imperial household but he is also fiercely dedicated to every member of the imperial family.
Still, he couldnât count the many times Ijichi had to scold him for all the mischief he caused while he was growing up even if his life depended on it. The worst scolding he got from the older man was when Suguru went missing on his fifth birthday, having snuck out of the banquet hall with at least ten pieces of bread stuffed in his pockets with every intention to feed them to the many ducks in the imperial gardenâs ponds.
âWhat?â your eyes nearly pop out of their sockets, you were going to get an earful later. âYou mean he went ahead without me?â
âItâs alright. Youâll see him later, sure heâs probably going to talk your ear off but he means well, trust me,â Suguru flashes you a reassuring smile.
You look at him, your lip curled into an uneasy grin. âThat doesnât sound like fun,â you bemoaned, having had enough reprimands to last you until your next life. âSo, with Mr. Ijichi gone, forgive my bluntness, but am I right to assume that Your Highness will be the one to bring me to the cathedral?â
Suguru accommodatingly holds out his arm for you to hold onto. âYou assume correctly,â he says warmly. You expect him to hurriedly lead you down the steps leading to the palaceâs main driveway, but he does something entirely different. âAre you ready to go or do you still need more time?â
That was the first time anyone in a kilometer-wide radius has asked you what you want to do instead of telling you what to do.
Suguru watches every small change in your expression. He figured that you must be pretty tired of people treating you like some robot, training you to blindly obey every order perfectly. The jet black-haired prince has only known you for two minutes and his heart is already disintegrating for your current predicament of feeling completely and entirely alone. If he could alleviate your troubles even with just a small act of kindness by engaging in polite conversation with you and actually listening to what you have to say instead of talking over you like most of your etiquette coaches have done all day, then, heâll gladly tune in to listen to you even as you read through an entire book of sonnets if you ever felt up to it.
Being validated comes a long way, and if anyone understands your plight, it was him and even if he didnât understand, heâll do everything he can to try regardless.
âI-Iâm ready,â you nodded hesitantly and Suguru doesnât walk ahead right away and allows you to set the pace as you walk past the line of attendants that bowed to you and the prince as you made your way to the imperial familyâs very own Toyota Century convertible which had been custom-made for you.
The open top roof gave onlookers access to see their future empress as the motorcade departs from the KĆkyo Imperial Palace and follows a 4.6-kilometer route that will travel to the St. Maryâs Cathedral, the seat of the Roman Catholic archdiocese of Tokyo. Neither you nor Satoru were practicing Catholics yet, the imperial family has decided that a Christian-themed wedding rather than the ancient Buddhist matrimonial ceremony that is usually done away from public view would make the imperial system appear more accessible to the people.
Suguru helps you into the car, gently arranging the train of your gown so that it doesnât get all wrinkled. âThank you, Your Highnessâ you whisper to Suguru who squeezes your free hand as if to say âyouâre welcomeâ. The carâs engine hums to life the minute the two of you are settled in the backseat. âW-what am I supposed to do now?â you asked, readjusting your grip on your bridal bouquet.
The prince lets out a humored snort, having forgotten that this was your first official function. Showing you the correct way to wave and the right angle to face and bow to the crowd, he watches you closely, allowing you to struggle for a bit before stepping in to help with some encouraging words. âJust keep smiling and waving. Itâs just like being onstage, you know.â At the center of the motorcade, six police cars patrol every side of the convertible forming a ring of protection just in case someone in the crowd with ill-intentions would try to harm either you or the monarch next to you.
Countless people erupt in happy cheers at the sight of you and Suguru, some are simply content with waving while others are holding up flowers and tossing them to the front of the crowd barriers in jubilation. âIt feels a little more intense than just being onstage,â you mumbled, your eyes landing on a little girl sitting in her motherâs arms as she waves a little Japanese flag in her hand which looked like she made it in her arts and craft class. You awkwardly wave at her, chuckling when she happily waves back, delighted to see you directly looking at her.
âWell, youâre doing great.â He inches closer to you, wrapping a steadying arm around your waist while the other guides your hand, gently angling it in a more prominent position so that you look a little more assertive. âLike this,â Suguru helps you wave in a more continuous manner, teaching you to center the motion by keeping your elbow mostly stationary and allowing only your wrist to subtly move from side to side. âAnd keep doing what youâre doing. Make eye contact with them; make them understand that you see each and every one of them.â
Suguru watches you bow and wave to the spectators with a proud smile on his face; the motorcade has now reached the Shinjuku area and is nearing its destination of Bunkyo-ku where the cathedral is and even still, the crowd doesnât appear to thin out. Suguru feels like heâs watching history unfold before his very eyes. He wonders if Satoru had purposefully chosen a commoner to conjure up a classic âlove conquers allâ romance of his own wedding day, if he did, then Suguru must congratulate him for a job well done. No one has ever come out to see a member of the imperial family in this sheer number, he daresay, not even the empress on her wedding day or His Majesty on his coronation day.
But with you, this day is nothing short of a revolution.
âYour Highness, youâre staring.â Suguru hums, confused, before realizing that heâs been looking at you funny. âYouâre still staring,â you said succinctly.
âOh, sorry.â Suguru says awkwardly and you couldnât help but let out a slight snort. âWhat?â he cocks his head in your direction. You were laughing, though brief, the very sound of it brings a smile to his face. âIt was about time though. Weâve been in this car for more than fifteen minutes now and that right there is the first genuine act of happiness Iâve seen you make,â he remarks. He was starting to think that you were incapable of smiling which he found a little unsettling since brides arenât exactly despondent during their wedding day. Of course, what would he know? His little brother had gotten married ahead of him.
You crinkle your nose in mock displeasure. âThatâs kinda mean and probably the last thing Iâd say to someone I just metâŠwith all due respect, Your Highness.â
Suguru grins at your tiny jab at his character, and to think that he nearly bought into the whole âas demure as a butterflyâ thing they said about you in the papers. Make no mistake though, he sees how elegantly ladylike you are, but he also sees how you are so effortlessly spellbinding with your wit translated into a few short but sweet words. No wonder Satoru fell for you and even gave up his vice-like romance with his chief-of-staff to marry you, he thinks to himself. âAlright, alright, Iâm sorry that was a bit uncalled for.â
âOhâ Your Highness, I was just joking.â You waved to the crowd of people on Suguruâs side of the car, grimacing when you see a few schoolboys, probably university students with how tall and mature they looked, pretend to blow you kisses. Indulging them, you subtly return the gesture flustered beyond all measure. Everything feels so public now, and you are left wondering about how you could survive the rest of your life like this.
ââŠI knew that.â Choosing momentary silence, Suguru finally decides to chip away at the facade you were putting up. He could see it in your eyes, you were a cross between scared and unhappy which is clearly normal for someone who is marrying into the oldest monarchy in the world. You werenât at all what the members of the Imperial Household Agency said of you when you were out of earshot: a sorry excuse of a future empress who is privileged in every way but canât find it within herself to stop her endless complaining. âJust trying to make you smile, thatâs all.â
Shouldnât your future husband be doing that? You sighed. Oh right, he was probably busy comforting Himiko. She probably needed him now more than ever after everything youâve done to torment her. âThank you, Your Highness.â
âSuguru,â he corrects kindly. âIf youâre going to marry my little brother, you could, at least, drop the troublesome title when youâre talking to me.â
Little brother? How have you never heard of this before? You knew Satoru had a brother, but you never thought Suguru would be the older one out of the two of them. If that was the case, then, why didnât he get the title of âCrown Princeâ?
âWeird, huh?â He breaks you out of your trance, as if he heard the question swirling around in your head. âWhy is Satoru the Crown Prince and not me?â
âAre you psychic or something?â you playfully teased, slowly growing more comfortable with the jet black-haired prince that sported an Apollo-like smile - warm, and inviting. âWhereâd you learn to do that?â
Suguru shrugs. âWhy? Whose mind do you want to read?â
Satoruâs, you smiled sadly. Maybe by unraveling the inner machinations of your soon-to-be husbandâs mind, you could learn to meet him halfway by understanding him a little better; no person is born inherently cruel and while you had your doubts, you know, in your heart, that Satoru is no exception to that rule. âNo one in particular.â
âAh, well, I expected that.â He grinned at how guarded you are, reclining against the plush seat of the car to rest his stiffening back for a minute. The convoy is about ten minutes away from the cathedral now.
You offered him some consolation though, grateful for this light-hearted chat. âLetâs just trade answers next time.â
âIâll hold you to it.â
Himiko thought this day would be horrible but it turns out it isnât as bad as she pessimistically thought. If she only knew that this was how the love of her lifeâs wedding would go with him still inviting her to his bed before he gets hitched off, then, maybe she shouldnât have been so awful towards you who never stood a chance against her. Competing with you would be like making a rival of a rat; it would be unnecessary trouble. Still, even if she had all but won against you (as if you were worthy enough to even become her opponent), that didnât stop the Zenin clanâs little darling from causing a little trouble today.
Her eyes flutter open to reveal Gojoâs handsome slumbering face, utterly spent from their lovemaking session, their naked forms still entangled together under the cotton-percale sheets. She stretches her supple body luxuriously, and pulls away from Satoruâs embrace earning a small âmmphâ of disapproval from her lover. Giggling, she plants a soft kiss on his chiseled cheek.
âYour Highness?â Someone says from behind the door. Taking one last look at Satoruâs sleeping form, she walks leisurely to answer it, clad only in the princeâs shirt which ran above her knee.
Leaning against the door, she answers for the prince, a detestable act similar to a cardinal sin. It was forbidden for a mere servant to speak for any member of the imperial family. In the past, in the Japanese empireâs golden age, a servant who took the words out of their masterâs mouth would have their tongue swiftly sliced off. But Himiko is not a servant, nor is she subject to the rules as long as the prince was around. âHis Highness is asleep.â
On his wedding day? The butler nods stiffly. âI see. Ms. Zenin, can I trouble you with this? The princeâs fiancĂ© has sent him a wedding gift.â
Himiko doesnât answer for a long while and a tense silence fills the room. âFine, but have you done what I asked?â she relents opening the door, the butlerâs face turns red at the sight of her lack of modesty. âHaving you run my errands isnât cheap, you know.â
The attendant bows his head, âYes. Sheâs currently wearing it right now, last I saw.â
âGood. Iâll be taking this then.â She shakes the box to get a feel of whatâs inside, not that it would be anything of high value though given its cheap sender.
Curiosity gets the better of her and she succinctly opens the gift, her eyebrow quirked. A watch. Very typical. She notes how itâs made out of silver and she scoffs harshly. Even if she didnât chuck it into the trash, Satoru would have done it himself since he prefers gold pieces over silver and he most certainly wouldnât want to touch anything that was from you given how he loathed the very idea of you.
The attendant gulps when he sees Himiko harshly discard your gift. âMs. Zenin, donât you think that giving her that would be taking it too far? You know how the Crown Prince feels about those earrings. If he ever were to find out that it had gone missingâŠâ
She turns her head in the direction of the bed where Gojo was currently tossing and turning in his sleep. âThen, Iâll tell His Highness that his chief butler,â her eyes were aglow with cunning as the butler trembled slightly at her murderous gaze. âIs a thief who stole from the imperial vaults, and if you ever decide to rat me out, who do you think the prince will believe? A nameless no account like you or me?â
It slowly registers in the attendantâs mind that he had been utterly played when Himiko asked him to give those earrings to you via an under the table agreement, itâs not like Satoru prepared a wedding gift for you anyway thinking that showing up to the accursed wedding in itself is a generous gift already. ââŠYou used meâŠ!â he whispers angrily, not wanting to rouse the prince.
Himiko shrugs nonchalantly. âAnd you were stupid enough to be used for a few banknotes. Now get lost, Iâll just inform His Highness of your voluntary resignation tomorrow morning.â
She closes the door on the rattled servant and saunters back over to the bed, slipping back under the sheets. Satoru sleepily notices the bed dip with her weight, and unconsciously snuggles closer to her, his arms wrapped around her form. She lovingly strokes his disheveled hair alternating between twirling his locks in her index finger and massaging his scalp as if she hadnât just ruined a manâs life two minutes ago. Her hands reach for the phone on the nightstand and she scrolls through her feed watching a video of the bridal car pulling up to the cathedral.
She boredly watches you step out of the car with your hand looped through Suguruâs arm shyly waving to the thousands happily anticipating this glorious day while your bridesmaids help you with your wedding gownâs train so it doesnât snag across the concrete steps. It takes about five minutes for the cathedralâs towering doors to open and she smirks when she sees you slowly make your way inside, completely oblivious to the fact that your groom is not at the end of the aisle where you expected him to be and is instead still soundly asleep next to her.
The silence that follows is indicative of the horrific scene that greeted you and Himiko switches off her phone, settling back into the pillows contentedly. Serves you right, (Y/N), she smirks.
12:30 PM.
Funny how you think that youâre immune to awful things that happen to other peopleâŠbefore it happens to you. Thereâve been hundreds of stories like this before, but you never thought that youâd find yourself in the long list of unfortunate jilted brides. Your hands tremble as you hold your bouquet of white calla lilies and babyâs breaths. Surely you must have gone blind or something or this was all some sick dream, you desperately search the cathedral room with abject horror in your eyes. It couldnât beâŠyou take an uneasy step toward the witness as your wedding guests whisper amongst themselves, their hearts filled to the brim with condolences for you.
Something in you jeeringly mocks you as if to chide you for living too long in the forest of your fantasy, dodging every pocket of realityâs sunlight as it shines through the many trees youâve cultivated with your delusions that thisâŠwhatever the hell this isâŠcould miraculously work out in the end. That you stood a chance against all the cards that were catastrophically stacked against you, and that he could give you even just a scintilla of respect if it was truly impossible for him to ever learn to love you.
âSuguru,â you instinctively clutch his hand as if by him squeezing your hand back, you could miraculously be put together again. You were so heartbroken that you didn't even realize that you just called him by his name, forgoing the mention of his venerable title. ââŠI-IâŠâ you gulp as you feel the dreaded words lodge deep in your throat, clogging your airways with uncried sobs.
âOh, (Y/N), Iâm so sorryâŠâ
ââŠWhereâs Satoru?â
