File clerks working at their electric elevator desks in Prague, 1937, former Czechoslovakia. The Central Social Institution in Prague housed the world’s largest vertical file cabinet, consisting of 3,000 drawers that stood 10 feet high, stretching from floor to ceiling and covering approximately 4,000 square feet. Each drawer was equipped with roller bearings to ensure smooth operation. Special desks were designed for the clerks managing these files, functioning as electrically operated elevators. Controlled by the touch of a button, these desks could rise or descend, move horizontally and stop precisely at the desired drawer, making the system remarkably efficient for its time.
