Liliana, we need to have a discussion.
-There wasn’t even a knock on the door, but Lily could hear the sternness of her adoptive mother’s voice and hesitantly went to the door, opening it and gesturing Rose inside.-
I… yes, mamma, but… but what’s the matter? Did… did something happen at your appointment?
Thank you.
-Rose walked into the apartment, turning after she was into the living room to face her daughter. An unreadable expression settled in Rose’s features, standing with her hand on her hip as she watched Lily.-
Adrian was filling in for my physician. I left before anything to drastic could occur but he did say something that I find extremely concerning, something I have noticed but failed to talk to you about.
Lily, are you hiding something from me in regards to your health?
-Lily swallowed, watching Rose with wary eyes. The moment she mentioned his name, the one she dreaded more than anything, a knot rose in her throat and she instinctively flinched, backing so hard against the door it slammed shut. Her chest tightened and her eyes stung, searching Rose’s green ones for any sign of kindness. Lily bit her lip and sniffed, wheezing as she tried to catch her breath.-
M-Mamma, I… I… Um… I d-didn’t w-want to tell you, I… I thought I c-could handle it w-with m-my job and… and…
-Tears spilled down her cheeks as she wrapped her arms around herself, her shoulders shaking, but… she knew she had to tell Rose. There was no alternative.-
I… I have… I have Cystic Fibrosis and… and mamma, I-I wanted to… to handle this, but I… I’m s-sorry.. I-I thought I c-could t-take care of it on my own.
-Rose immediately went toward Lily, pulling her into an embrace before kissing her forehead and shushing her softly. She hadn’t meant to make Lily cry.-
Lily, oh mon fleur, I am so sorry.
I’m not mad, I just want to help you. Come on, away from the door- sit down okay?
-Rose guided Lily to the couch in the living room before kneeling infront of her, wiping away the tears with her knuckles.-
When you are calmed down we can continue, all I want is to help you mon fleur. I love you. All I want is for you to be okay…
-Holding onto Rose, Lily shook, forcing herself not to cry anymore, but a few tears still came. She nodded, letting her adoptive mother lead her to the sofa.-
D-Don’t... don’t apologize, m-mamma, I... I s-should have t-told you.
-As she sat down, Rose wiping her tears away, Lily’s lower lip quivered. She opened and closed her mouth a few times to speak, trying to find the words.-
Wh-why was h-he there... H-He can’t... he can’t d-do anything, c-can he? I don’t... I don’t wanna g-go t-to that h-hospital anym-more, mamma. I-I c-can’t.
Liliana, we need to have a discussion.

Well, imagine that. Come in for a cup of coffee and I think I fell asleep. There's no way someone so gorgeous can be anything other than a dream. How ya doin' doll? Name's Riker.
Oh...? I...
-Lily turned, seeing a rather tall man with dark hair smiling at her, his dark green- or was it blue- eyes shining and he winked. Her face flashed scarlet and she tucked her face down.-
H-Hello... I-I'm Lily. It's nice to meet you, Riker. C-Can I... Can I get you anything to drink?
Hey mamma... you there? I managed to get out without Fox catching me... I wanted... I wanted you to... meet your future grandson. - Lotus
Lotus! I didn’t think I would get to see you- how is mon fleur? Is he doing alright? I can imagine you must be exhausted.
Oh but he is getting so big isn’t he? You are positively glowing!
-Lotus laughs quietly, tucking her head down before hugging Rose tightly, as much as her swollen stomach would allow.-
I’m… all right. We’re all okay, just trying to put things together little by little. I haven’t been able to get five minutes with Fox to get him to apologize. Stubborn ass. And people call me stubborn.
-She huffs and releases Rose, looking around curiously.-
Not much has changed, mamma. I’m glad. I really missed you. And yeah… Lukas… he’s definitely going to be bigger than me one day. Fuck, everyone’s bigger than me. Um… did you want to come with me and get a bite to eat? My treat.
-Rose happily returned the embrace, squeezing Lotus lightly as to not hurt her.-
Oh it’s alright- I…. It will work out. He is just…. opinionated.
-After Lotus pulled away, Rose patted her daughter’s head lovingly before smiling.-
Is he kicking yet? If he is anything like his father and you he will be a fighter.
And I would love to grab some food- where did you have in mind?
- Laughing, Lotus takes her adoptive mother’s hand and puts it to her stomach as Lukas starts kicking.-
He’s definitely started, and kicks like a mule. He’s his father’s son for sure.
Opinionated is definitely a good choice of words. Personally, I’d call him a raving dick, but then I hear his smartass mouth before I even get the words out.
-She smiles, her eyes shining brightly and takes her wallet from her pocket.-
There’s this new French restaurant in town that I wanted to take you to. ‘Authentic French cuisine’ is what the flyer said. What do you think?
-Pure joy lit up Rose’s face as she felt the baby moving under her hand. She gently moved her hand over Lotus’ large belly, feeling Lukas wiggle and kick. He certainly was strong. Rose’s eyes crinkled as a smile blossomed on her lips, laughing happily.-
Oh my! He is such a fighter, you are going to have your hands full~
-She pulled her hand away, standing up straight.-
Lotus, language! The restaurant sounds lovely- I guess we will have to see for ourselves if it lives up to the claims hmm?
-Rose watched Lotus for a moment, before the words came tumbling out of her mouth.-
You are going to be such a wonderful mother, I just know it.
-Another bright smile, feeling more content the more time Lotus spent with Rose. She would have to kick Fox’s ass into apologizing for sure. She needed this. She needed a mom. Nodding, Lotus rubbed her stomach and peered up at Rose, almost exhausted already.-
You don’t have to tell me twice. I think he’s trying to kill me from the inside.
-Lotus tucks her head down at her mother’s scolding, shuffling a bit before meeting her gaze.-
Sorry, mamma. But… I can’t help it. He didn’t have to be such a fucking asshole and- Oops! Sorry!
But… yeah, let’s check it out.
-Linking arms, her smile softens and she shakes her head.-
If I’m a wonderful mother, then I think the grandmother should be getting the credit, hmm?
-She playfully nudges Rose and squeezes her arm lovingly.-
-Rose was was suddenly solemn as Lotus spoke.-
No dear, I’m not…you are strong, feirce, independent. I know you will be a good mother but me? I’m just a woman who can’t even protect her loved ones. I only make mistakes and then try my best to fix it. There is nothing special about me….
-Realizing she had let her thoughts get the best of her, Rose fell silent as she walked with Lotus.-
…Forgive me- I said too much. No one…no one should have been privy to that.
-Biting her lip, Lotus peers over at Rose, eyebrows knitted in concern. There was a lot her adoptive mother kept buried, but sometimes… sometimes it slipped, and that was okay. She sighed and rubbed her arm lovingly.-
That isn’t true. You can protect your loved ones. You have before. Kit, Eliza, me, all of us. But we’re stubborn and pig-headed, we don’t listen to anyone until it’s too late. And I know you’ve shaken your head a few times at the way things have been.
-Lotus gave what she hoped was a reassuring smile and nudged Rose playfully once more.-
And besides, who is the one keeping us together? Who is the one who wipes our tears and comforts us when we need it most? It’s you, mamma. No one else. You.
-Rose opened her mouth to say something but swiftly shut it in fear her voice might waver and betray the sob that was trapped in her chest. After a moment in which she took a deep breath she responded.-
Thank you Lotus, so much. You are a blessing.
-Pausing their walk, Rose pressed a loving kiss to Lotus’ forehead.-
Je t'aime, ma fille.
-There was more beneath the surface. There always was. But Lotus was the type that if someone tried to dig too deep, she would snap. Not wanting that same type of treatment, she kept her mouth shut, walking to the car and opening the door for Rose.-
I think I was the one blessed, actually. You saved me.
-As Rose sat in the car, and before the passenger door could be shut, Lotus left a kiss on her cheek, giving her mother a teary smile.-
Jeg elsker deg også mamma.

[Lotus shakes furiously, wrapped in a towel over her swimsuit as she bangs on the door.] F-Fox... F-Fox, c-can you open th-the d-door? S-Something ha-happened. [She sniffs, wiping her eyes and waits.]
Sugar, the fuck - Lo, what’s wrong?
-Still shaking, she barely meets his eyes, closing her own tightly.-
I… I… W-Well, that, um… I g-got a-attacked, by um… something. It- it’s fucking weird, and I swear… Fox, I swear, I wouldn’t believe this shit if it didn’t happen and… c-can I come in?
-A tear slides down her cheek and she bites her lip, wiping the tear away with a strangled sigh.-
Get inside. Sit down. I’ll get you a blanket, then talk.
-Nodding, Lotus limps inside, stopping in the doorway. She knew he saw, so she stopped, squeezing the large, oversized towel around her.-
I c-can’t walk very f-far. Get… shit. Get the first aid kit, and some alcohol.
Can’t - The fuck happened?!
-Lotus drew in a shaking breath, her eyes stinging and she removed the towel. Claw marks and deep scratches marred her arms and legs, rivulets of blood trailing down.-
H-How much fucked up shit do you believe in? B-Because uhm... because this... this is beyond fucked up.
[Lotus shakes furiously, wrapped in a towel over her swimsuit as she bangs on the door.] F-Fox... F-Fox, c-can you open th-the d-door? S-Something ha-happened. [She sniffs, wiping her eyes and waits.]

Gone
They’ll be gone soon. That thought seemed ever present the more Lily looked in the mirror. Rose’s mirror. Clutching the porcelain sink with a grip tight enough to make her knuckles match in hue, the tears continued to fall as the faces flashed through her mind in rapid synchronicity. Rose. Kit. Fox. Gillian. Eros. Cossette. If they don’t die, they’ll leave you. Everyone leaves you, Lily. And do you know why? It’s because you have nothing to offer them. You’re only pregnant because Fox sees the two of you as separate entities. At least Lotus is stable. You can’t even go into a clinic without having a panic attack. You can’t-
“Lily dear,” Rose’s voice snapped Lily from her private war, causing her to sniff abruptly and whirl toward the door. Locked. Rose couldn’t enter. Small miracles. “Y-Yes mamma?” She tried her best to call back steadily to the woman who’d been taking care of her since the trauma in Dr. Mauro’s office, since her… break. “There’s tea ready and I left you a few cinnamon rolls, too. Is everything all right? You’ve been in there for some time.” “Yeah,” Lily replied, a definite lie. “Yeah, I’m all right. Really feeling Lukas move around, that’s all. I’ll be out in a few minutes.” With a murmur of consent, Lily listened to Rose’s retreating footsteps before looking at her reflection once more.
Broken. So broken. There was nothing there worth fixing, left for nothing more than the trash to be incinerated later. Why did it all turn out like this? Locked away in a private bathroom, sobbing in the corner as everyone she’d already lost came back to haunt her. Her best friend, before she came here, took her own life for reasons she wouldn’t give. No note, not a word. Just a few empty bottles and a loaded gun. Her grandmother, taken by cancer, eaten alive by what could have been cured had it been caught in time. Her new friends in school, just some time after earning that scholarship, turned foul and cold. Each one, turning their backs on her, one right after another. Without a reason why, just… gone.
Then after, with him… Adrian. Lily stared at her fingers, once broken, now slightly disfigured. Her legs bore scars of him cutting wherever he chose. Her head… how many times had she been strapped to that table? She shuddered, the scar on her scalp prickling from the memories. And his gift of reuniting her with the corpses of her parents in that rotting cellar, keeping her caged for days without food or water as she could do nothing but look into their cold faces and weep. Lily clamped a hand over her mouth, to muffle the strangled, screaming sob that threatened to rip from her throat. Adrian only took her from that cellar when she was too delirious to even speak, let alone see properly.
Lights hurt. Scars around her ankles and wrists from too tight restraints to keep her from leaving were prominent as ever, lightning bright against pale skin. Getting out of there was a mystery even to this day. Was he away? Did she sneak out? She couldn’t remember. A black period until she found he had family in the area. Family that she wasn’t aware of, that he might not be aware of either. Graves. Only two that she’d been aware of: Michael, or Kit, and Gabriel, otherwise known as Fox. She had to get a warning out, to stay away from Adrian. Finding herself at the steps of one Rosalin Alder, Lily was able to pass along a warning well enough, only meeting Kit at the time. But Kit… that sweet, sweet man, couldn’t stay away from family. It was her own fault, really. If she had never said a word, had never shown up at his door, he never would’ve been… It’s all my fault. Kit was poisoned and it’s all my fault. Why did I even come here?
Another black period. The embossed logo of one Dr. Psyche Mauro. Maybe Adrian could have found help, so she went inside. What she found was another thing altogether. Curiosity that broke her completely, left her screaming and shattered. Everything is my fault. Lotus was her strength, but even that was slipping from her grasp. No comfort, no concern, no one there. She was a burden, a weight that everyone else had been carrying, eager to remove the chains and be done with it. It wasn’t worth it.
Lily continued to sob on Rose’s bathroom floor, holding her swollen stomach as the tears fell like rain. A kick. Baby Lukas would be coming soon, but after that… after that, who would want her to stay? She was in the way, everything was her fault, a replacement at best on most days and an annoyance on others. “This is all I am now.” A soft, broken whisper. “This is it.” Once the baby came, once everything was in place, then no one would need her. Then they’d be gone.
((Work of fiction.))
[Lily rushed into the bakery, completely startled as she looked around. Michael wasn't out front, so she could only assume he was baking in the back. Leaning over the counter, she called for him.] Michael? Y-You there, sweetheart? S-Something happened and I... I'm a bit rattled. I... I think I need you to see this.
-Michael came out at the sound of her voice, brows drawn together in worry-
Lily? What’s wrong, what happened?
-He maneuvered around the counter and came to stand in front of her, a comforting hand placed on her shoulder-
What is it, honey?
-Safe. She was safe now, holding onto Michael as he tried his best to soothe her. Warmth, love, happiness. All the things she desperately needed, especially now.-
P-people are... people h-have g-gone m-missing and... it-
-Lily swallowed, her eyes stinging. God, she felt like such a child. But she was new, and people who'd been inherently cruel to her had gone missing. What would that look like to the police?-
It was th-those p-people b-bullying me in school. M-My ex t-too, he- he's gone too. M-Michael... Michael, what do I do? I'm s-so scared th-that it might be Adrian or that the police are gonna look at me. I'm s-sorry... I didn't know who else to go to.
Lo, can I like - forget it. Never mind.
Hold up! Fox, wait a second, would ya?
-Lotus catches up to him and steps in front of him.-
What’s going on? Can you what?
Lucas - I wanna…
You’re belly.
Is that it? Since when did this warrant asking permission? Yeah, fine.
Oi, look this shit is newti me. Fucking Kaiya was dumped on my doorstep, I never got to do this shit before.
It’s fine. Breathe, would you? Just… sit down on the couch with me.
You’re right… You’re right. Just -
He’s going to be so tiny.
Yeah… kids usually are.
Huh… made me think it was something important, walking off like that. Or something… nah, forget it.
