I was babysitting for some kids once. Good kids, for being kids. We ate junk food and watched mind-numbing television until it was time for them to go to bed. I put the older twins to bed first, knowing they would cooperate a little more than the littlest girl. That took several minutes as I read stories and answered the deep questions in life. Then I went to her room. She was already in bed, which surprised me. "Wow," I said. "Thanks for not fighting me this time."

She smiled sheepishly at me. "Can you check under the bed?" she asked.

"What, are you scared of monsters?" I asked. "I thought you were a big girl now."

She didn't say anything; she just looked at me hopefully. I sighed and got down on the floor, dramatically lifting the bed curtain.

Then my stomach turned over.

Underneath the bed was what remained of the little girl. Her throat had been ripped out and her mouth was open in a silent scream. Blood poured from her wounds and soaked into the carpet. 

I heard a giggle from overhead. My blood froze as I slowly sat up and looked at the girl on the bed. She grinned at me. "Don't you dare tell," she said. "Or you'll be ne
