To say that James was in a mood, well that was one way to put it. He was in quite the mood, really. He was still pissed off that Slytherin had won and now he had to patrol. It was one of the nights that he and Lily actually patrolled together, and he had been relatively quiet most of the time, far too lost in his own self-pity. Finally, he spoke. âHave you even noticed that I am quiet?âÂ
Lily had thought it was best to leave James alone. There was no point bothering him when he was in such a mood, and she had kept her mouth shut the entire time that they were walking round the school on their nightly patrol. It was one of the rare times that they did so together, and only when he piped up did she decide that she should reply. âOf course I noticed. But what good would it do, me asking why youâre upset? I know why. I canât do anything about what happened.â

âWell thank you.â  He then smiled at her. âBoring isnât safe. You need to be adventurous. Youâre hotter than hell and you need to live a little. Snog boys, drink, hell even smoke. Iâll even get you to swear.âÂ
âI swear, Potter.â Lily scoffed a little, turning around so that her back was against the fencing behind her around the roof. âI kiss boys too, I just donât make a big scene of it.â

âI do try to be at least semi-tolerable, you know.â  He then watched her take a drink and he smiled at her. âNo problem. You know, youâre not as boring as some people like to say you are.âÂ
âYouâre not bad.â Lily laughed, and she then rubbed at her cheek a little at his comment. âI am boring. But I like being boring. Boring is safe and happy and where I belong.â
âYou know you are witch right? And a very skilled one if one believes the gossip. Why not just use a spell?â
âBecause that just wouldnât be fulfilling now Amelia, would it?â
âWatch your step. I canât make any promises that Iâll be able to catch you if you fall.â
âCome on now Marls, I only climbed up here because I thought that you would probably save me if I fell. Donât say you wonât be my safety net now!â
âAnd if you fall down you are going to break every bone in your bodyâŚ.â Alice sighed and shook her head. âJust be careful, okay?â
âMe? Fall? Alice, please, I have the reflexes of a--â Gasping a little as her hand slipped, Lily regained her balance and then looked down at Alice. âThe bird needs to be saved.â
âIf I can just-- just make it-- to the next branch, Iâll be able to reach that little trapped bird.â

âCan you honestly say you really want to throw me off the roof? That seems a little violent for you.â He smiled at her, handing her a bottle. âYou go first..âÂ
âI suppose not -- you havenât been such bad company today.â Lily gave a small smile as she took the bottle into her hands and took a swig, never once dropping eye contact with James. âThank you.â She then offered it back to him.
âWell, I⌠could bring you back toi the castle, if you want?â Alice suggested with a small, helpless shrug. âLike - they cannot exactly force us to stay here the whole time, can they?â
âI donât think theyâll let u, Alice. They wonât let us -- or me -- go somewhere safe, and weâll be stuck out here. Please, just... I just want to sit here.â
Emmaâs small lips curled to a smirk as she observed the way that Lily reacted to her comment. âOf course, whatever you say. Go on a ride then, if youâre not scared.â
âI donât wish to, Emma I donât think you realise, but I donât have the same sort of blood as you. I think the rides may not be tailored to someone of my status.â Lily snapped back with sarcasm in her voice.
â I donât careâŚmy bruises are already healed anyway.â she wrapped an arm around her friend. â Youâll be fine, weââll figure something out.â
Leaning her head on Marleneâs shoulder, Lily let her eyes close for a moment, taking in the comfort that one of her best friendâs provided. âI donât like this.â
âPerhaps you should let someone give you a tail, show your peers how itâs done. Thereâs a lot of unnecessary screaming at the minute.â
âAh yes, because I shall willingly stand in a booth and let people try and stab something sharp into my body. Great suggestion, Carrow. Thank you.â

âIâm more than alright. Iâm so damn smart, but anyway, letâs no make you want to throw yourself off the roof.  Do you want a drink?âÂ
âNo, itâll be you that I throw of of the roof. Lily joked, before then nodding her head. âSure, why not.â
âYes, thatâs the talk we have often.â  He then sighed, trying to decide if he should go or not, but then an owl he hadnât seen before appeared out of nowhere, with something in his mouth. âWhat the..â Taking it, he opened it and he sighed. âSomeoneâs trying to play a riddle but Iâm thinking it may make sense? What do you think?â He went to hand it to her.Â
Lily wanted James to go away. She didnât want to have anyone around her because this fete was a nightmare that she wanted to forget about. However, James didnât seem to want to leave, being the relentless man that he always was, and he moved to hand her a piece of parchment that had been delivered to him, which she took with a sigh. Sometimes, it was better to just go along with what he wanted than it was to defy him. âWhatâs this?â
âLily? Hey⌠Lily, itâs me, Alice,â the Gryffindor slowly approched and then crouched down next to the redhead. âI donât want to be either, but, hey - are you alright? Or did anyone do something to you?â
âAlice... Alice Iâm fine, I just...â Lily shook her head a little, keeping her eyes cast downwards. âI donât want to be here. Itâs horrible.â
âYou know now I truly am curiousâ he said looking up in disbelief, âwhy did they let you keep your position? You have no power over usâ he stated matter of factly, âso then whatâs the pointâŚâ
âSomeone has to be in control of the muggleborns, donât they Someone who can talk to them, and make them see reason, to fall into line so that we donât get harmed for something we canât control.â
