This is Magister Raelee Svala, my OC from the long-running MUD, Gemstone IV. In short, she's a mage who likes fire and books... though not combined. I've been working with this character for 14 years of my life, though I hadn't drawn her since 2006. (See here: Damaged Eyes - I'd like to think I've upped my game a bit since then.) I actually did the initial sketch for this in September of last year. I agonized over the details on this one, as it was pretty important to me on a personal level. Though after nearly 11 months of on and off work, she's done and I'm pretty happy with the result.
This is the cover art for the debut novel by David Fleming, The Prometheus Effect... with cover art by me! Photoshop + Illustrator + Wacom
“Jack is a ferociously independent man with a mind that comes along once in a generation, but even geniuses make mistakes. The City, a secret organization with a mission to secure peace for mankind, works toward a solution to save the world from a century of bad decisions. A few countries have discovered that the Age of Oil is coming to an end and are playing a deadly game of deception to ensure they possess the final reserves. The United States, no longer the prime superpower, is targeted by a destructive force to end its remaining might. While the world plays its lethal schemes, one child, rescued by the City, refuses to be just a pawn after he is included in the game. Just like the mythical Prometheus, he has the power to save humanity... or burn it into extinction.”
The Prometheus effect is available now on Amazon: https://www.amazon.com/dp/1973769646/ref=sr_1_1?s=books&ie=UTF8&qid=1501181398&sr=1-1
I just saw Wonder Woman
Warning: I just got home from seeing Wonder Woman, and I have a lot to say.
I love good stories and good characters, those tend to illicit more passion in me than just about anything else. On top of that, I love a bombastic, action-packed story... the kind with lots of explosions and punching. Thus, when I was about eleven, I fell in love with super heroes.
Being a super hero and sci-fi fan as a young girl left me without too many peers to share those loves with. It was that way too as a young(er) woman, though the internet sure helped. (Though that has changed massively in the past 10 years. As noted Wonder Woman writer Gail Simone once mentioned, you can tell something's changed. There's a line for the women's restroom at comic conventions now.) As I grew older myself and was able to look at things critically, the intersection of feminism and super heroes became an oddly-specific passion topic of mine.
I've always been more of a Marvel fangirl over DC, likely due to my early indoctrination being with the X-Men. That ludicrous universe gave me no shortage of heroines to look up to, and that I still admire today. Captain Marvel, Rogue, Mockingbird, etc. That doesn't mean I don't appreciate Wonder Woman, though. She is THE one, the only one who I would call a true cultural icon. What she stands for matters to me. She matters to me.
Thus, I've been excited and worried about this movie ever since it was announced. There's been a long lasting resistance from the Hollywood suits when it came to making a superhero movie starring a woman. And, I haven't had a lot of faith in WB's handling of the DCU. I knew that this movie both needed to be GOOD and also perform well for there to be a real future for more of these stories to be told on this big of a stage. If Wonder Woman, THE most iconic woman to ever take up the spandex can't sell it, who can?
And yet they did it. She did it. We probably won't see weekend box office numbers for another two days... but the critics have loved it, and so have I. For that, I am so heartened and happy. The movie wasn't perfect, but it was very good. Dare I say... wonderful? I adored it. They showed us a Wonder Woman that was exactly what she's supposed to be. She is strong, powerful, and truly truly good amongst a sea of brooding anti-heroes... and on top of that, they told her story well.
Maybe it's a little odd for an adult woman like myself to still be starry-eyed over a superhero. But Diana of Themyscira (and yes, I can spell that without looking it up) brings with her this message of hope and love being the true great power that I think the whole world needs to hear right now. I hope everybody gives it a chance. Even if they don't, I'm still feeling good things tonight.
I just hope that the next big one, Captain Marvel (my all-time favorite) in 2019 can do the same.
Yeah... feeling all the feels tonight. Thanks for reading.
"Death is looking to retire. Yes, retire. When Hunter Green dies in a car accident and lands himself in Hell, the Grim Reaper decides to see how far up the underworld’s corporate ladder the young man will climb. Now it’s up to the sarcastic persona of Death to recruit his replacement, because he can’t really die trying." Here is the cover illustration and design I did for "The Death of Me", a new short story by author Brandon Schnabel.
”The Death of Me” is now available on Amazon.
This is the commission I brought home from NYCC2016. It’s a beautiful watercolor of Bobbi “Mockingbird” Morse by Jeff Dekal (@jeffdekal). I worry that I didn’t adequately express how much I loved it, but I do. It’s an instant favorite amongst all of the commissions I’ve brought home over the years. (And my first that isn’t Carol Danvers!)
... now I have to rearrange my living room walls.
Thanks, Jeff. Made my weekend worth it!
This is how a new project starts. Now taking bets on how many weeks before it ends. #pencildrawing #gs4
Gypsy Vanner by lilyinblue (That’s me!)
I was digging through a bunch of unfinished art, thinking I'd complete one of those pieces. I had lots of incomplete super heroes - my usual subject. There was Black Widow, Captain Marvel, Psylocke, Mockingbird and even Dazzler in various states of completion. Seized with indecision, I did the only logical thing...
... and I drew a fuzzy pony instead! So here's a Gypsy Vanner, always a gorgeous breed. It's sort of fun to draw horses again - when I was a kid, they were the only thing I ever drew. (The superheroes didn't happen until I was an adult, oddly...)
I haven’t produced any new art in almost a year and a half. I’m not proud of this. I’m not happy about this.
Thus, I’m trying to start again. Since superhero pinups are my comfort zone, it seemed like a good place to warm up and shake off my rustiness. I figured I would try an old favorite... my very first favorite superhero: Rogue.
Here’s hoping there’s more to come soon.
This was my entry to the Red Sonja cover contest run by Dynamite Comics and ArtofDrawingg on Instagram. Alas, it did not get picked as one of the four finalists (a lot of fantastic art was submitted) but I'm still super thrilled with how it came out. Adobe Photoshop 5.5 with a Wacom Intuos 3 over about 4-5 days. (Red Sonja is currently the property of Dynamite comics.)

I'm on Instagram now!
I just got myself set up on Instragram, since it seemed like the thing to do! http://instagram.com/sharlow_art Unfortunately, someone took my usual name. (I really need to figure out this personal branding thing.)
Time for Marvelous Cake!
Our weekly Agents of SHIELD viewing party is getting turned into a "Happy Captain Marvel Movie Announcement" party tonight!
Only 1347 days until Captain Marvel hits theaters!
I'm back from #NYCC and again, I had the most amazing time. It was fantastic seeing the Carol Corps out in force!
I brought home these two awesome sketches of Carol! The first is by Valerio Schiti. (I love the extra earrings. Her ears sort of look like mine now!) and the second by the current artist on her book, Marcio Takara. I love them both.
Walkar, The Abomination by lilyinblue This was a submission to the "Cross into Shadows" art contest run by Gemstone IV. (One of the longest-running MUDs currently online.) This is the NPC Walkar Wellington, former mayor of Wehnimer's Landing, in his Abomination form, after having finally lost his soul and self to the shadows. Photoshop 5.5 with a Wacom Intuos 3
Queen Elsa - Frozen by lilyinblue (That’s me!)
It’s been awhile since I’ve finished anything, so I’m happy to be producing art again. I started this over the winter after first seeing Frozen. Like most people and semi-intelligent creatures, I’m very attracted to shiny things. I was really enchanted with how everything in that movie sparkled and shone in the light… and I wanted to attempt to recreate some of that. (Also, Elsa is just pretty awesome too. And the detail on that gown…)
Photoshop CS5.5 + Wacom Intuos 3
Some Captain Marvel love from my LCS
This is what the front window of my local comic shop has looked like since last week’s release of Captain Marvel!
What shop is that? I want to send them a thank you.
That is the front window of New England Comics in Brookline, MA. It's a shop run by some awesome people, and I'm sure they'd be thrilled to hear from you!
