The Thirteen Blades of East Anam
Chapter 23, 24, and 25
Chain of Command
Soonyoung mounted his horse the moment the Shadows were out of sight. They were packed enough. They needed to move. Now.
Forget the carts. Forget the Pilgrims. They were safe enough. They could come back for them.
All he could think about was Seokmin. The way his already lame arm hung limp at his side. The way his shoulder slumped at that odd angle.
Crushed. The whole arm had been demolished.
And FiadhâŠ
There was a trail of splattered blood still cooling in the snow at his horseâs hooves.
He shouldnât care. He shouldnât feel this pit of hollow dread in his stomach. Sheâs no one, a Pilgrim. Sheâs supposed to be dead in a week.

Chapter 22: The Last Bastion
Wonwoo urged his horse onward through the dark. Jun was far ahead, and he kept the other two Shadows in his sights as their horses thundered over the road.
Vernon whistled to his hawk and Wonwoo found himself counting his heartbeats until the hawk called back. Two calls returned to his ears and his shoulders relaxed.
Two meant she could still see Jun.
Seokmin faded in and out of consciousness on the back of Minghaoâs horse as they rode on, trying his best not to cry out with each lurch of their canter. Wonwoo could only imagine the pain that shot through him each time the horseâs hooves collided with the packed earth. Still, they rode onward.
Wonwoo tried to stay focused on the task at hand, tried to keep his torch arm held high as they rode through the dark. But his mind kept pulling back to that strange creature, to the way the Elfâs magic had wrapped fire around its Rotted body and destroyed it.

Chapter 21: Feldir
Seungkwan and Jihoon made to accompany Fiadh that evening when they broke for camp to forage for their evening meal. She watched in fascination as her bare feet found pathways through the snow-covered ground between the trees. She didnât even flinch.
âAre you not cold?â He asked as they had stopped to gather some still-ripe berries from a bush.
Fiadh shook her head.
âAre you? Do you need to go back?â
Seungkwan glanced down at his thick woolen cloak, heavy leather boots, and breeches then at her tattered gray shift and threadbare hood.
âIâm fine itâs just. I know itâs freezing.â
Fiadh laughed.
âAye, it is. But I am not cold. Worry not, mortal youngling. I shall not perish because of a bit of snow.â
Jihoon snorted.

Chapter 20: Once Known
Chan swung himself onto his horse that morning and carefully reached down to help Fiadh into the saddle behind him.
âAre you ready, my lady?â
She huffed and felt the air around her for his hand, finally grasping his fingers and swinging herself up. He was always shocked at how she moved, like wind over long grass.
âAgain with âmy ladyâ, youngling?â Her voice was amused and a little annoyed as she settled in behind him.
âI- thatâs how a man should speak to a woman, is it not?â
Fiadh hummed.
âMortal customs arenât as familiar to me. My time among you has not been spent with nobility but in small hovels and villages. Even in Ceapach I spent time in the lower city.â
Chan thought about this. In his mind Elves were like cold royalty. Or thatâs how the stories always made them seem. Not Fiadh, though. She was more real. Human. Well, almost human.

Chapter 19: Foothills
Minghao rode in the cart for the next week, his leg constantly throbbing beneath the bandages. When Chan had suggested he let the Elf heal him he had nearly rolled out of the pile of sacks they had lay him upon.
He had seen the unnatural darkness from behind the canvas of the cart. Had heart the horrible sounds of the Rotted, their voices speaking that cursed tongue sending a wave of dread through his heart.
Rotted were corrupted by some sort of cursed disease. This they knew. Few Rotted had the ability to wield magic. So how had these creatures summoned the dark that they traveled under? Where had they come from?
And the lightâŠ
That had frightened him more than anything else.
