The drop light was designed as part of a UNIDO funded project to revitalize the local economy in Luxor. I was one of the designers that worked with craftsmen hands-on to develop products using soft alabaster or as it is known locally "mar-mar". Workshops in Luxor that work with the storied material have been suffering from the economic impact of low tourism in Egypt. We hope this project and products will help revitalize these workshops and bring vital income to the families that have dedicated themselves to this craft for generations.

SUN-RA mirror

Sun-Ra is a wall mirror with integrated shelf and hanging prongs (or fingers). The design references Ancient Egyptian design in its simplification of forms to basic geometries. The form is first laser-cut and then shaped. The prongs and shelf are designed to hold the many accruements of daily life to help organize the disorganized.

“Shadow” table takes advantage of translucent properties of alabaster. The blackened brass frame is a series of lines that seem to be projected from the alabaster surface to the ground.

The idea is to rethink traditional materials, alabaster, and present new ways of representing Egyptian design.
