Aaron Walter and Designing for Emotion

I read Walter’s article “Why designing for delight is no longer enough” today and greatly appreciated what he had to say. He points out that delight isn’t always appropriate, and sometimes empathy, honesty, or compassion are better additions to online experiences. “Design is getting more complicated and rightfully so. We are complicated beings with shifting emotions that shape our experience. “

I sent some feedback to the UX team at Pinterest today...

I’ve been finding a few pain points and was compelled to make suggestions.

Hello Pinterest UX team,

I've been very frustrated with the elimination fo the feature that   used to allow me to edit the caption of my pins  from the browser extension. I used to even be able to highlight the text  I wanted  to be the caption of the pin, and the extension would automatically include that in the caption. Why has this been changed?

The number of clicks and time it takes to edit the caption now is such a labor. Once I click  "save" in order to create the pin, the process goes like this: Click "See it now." Click "Edit" button. Click into the text field. Adjust the text. Click "Save."

It's very important to me to be able to easily edit the text associated with my pins, because I mainly use Pinterest as a personal inspiration board. This means that having pins easily searchable is a priority, otherwise my own pins become worthless to me, because I wouldn't be able to reference my pins in the future.

Could you please consider bringing back this capability I'm referring to? I'm also highly interested in the rationale for the change away from this capability.

As a side note, I'm also quite frustrated with the removal of the user's /boards pages. Because I use Pinterest as a catalog, I used my /boards page as my home page,  and having the /boards page automatically redirect to the /saved page takes away usability, reliability, and structure, because it  continually changes based on what boards I've recently created. Would it be possible to make the /boards permalink available again for those who depended on it?

I’m feeling accomplished after sending over interaction annotations for my first real-life product last week! howbigishell.com will be getting a major facelift soon.

Earlier this week, co-workers pulled me into usability tests, which made me realize I needed to add a hover state and clicked state to some of thebuttons. Looks like the “UI Cheatsheet for Buttons” article I read in July is sticking!

Simple can be deceiving because even the simplest interfaces house conflicts underneath. Integrative thinking  leads us to not oversimplify our options but to respect the complexities of both the problem and potential solutions, which offers a broader understanding.

Integrative Thinking definition:

“The ability to face constructively the tension of opposing ideas and, instead of choosing one at  the expense or the other, generate a creative resolution of the tension in the form of a new idea that contains elements of the opposing ideas, but is superior to each.”

I hadn’t heard about Integrative Thinking yet, and I’m excited to dig into it more.

Fun fact: a data-driven decision would have led the CDC to close the Ebola room, which had been unused for 10 years. A data-informed decision led them to keep it  open and active, which allowed  them to act quickly when it was needed.

Our goal should be to make data-informed decisions.

While learning the field, it’s hard to not feel overwhelmed by all there is to catch up on. Instead of trying to learn everything at once, I’m sticking with the material at my level and a step or two ahead and I’m sticking first to what excites and motivates me.
