Of course, the real reason the makeover plot was scrapped was because they realized it’s patently silly for anyone to give Stede Bonnet fashion advice.

There’s something about Ed and Stede’s final reunion in Mermen being them running TOWARD each other, when so much of the series is them running AFTER each other.

They physically chase after each other throughout. Ed starts by pursuing Stede to meet him. Later, he follows Stede to the beach to talk to him. Then Stede, having realized they love each other, pursues Ed across the Caribbean. He follows him to Anne and Mary’s. Ed follows Stede to his cabin on the night of Calypso’s Birthday. Stede searches for Ed during Man on Fire. Ed searches for Stede during Mermen.

But the beach scene is them finally running towards each other. Both of them, secure in the knowledge of their love AND in the knowledge of the other man’s love, running across the beach and meeting in the middle. They’re not chasing after each other anymore.

This moment is also framed with them in total balance. There’s an equal amount of negative space on both sides of them, with them as the focal in the center. Ed ran from the direction of the sea, Stede ran from the direction of the land, and they meet in the center in harmony.

This is something I've thought about so much over the past few days. We know. We've always known. We see him and his supporters and we have to admit, fully and finally, that this country is divided between us and them. They are more than willing to crawl on their bellies and lick fascism's boots. They are fascists, whether they know or admit to it or not. And they are our neighbors, our families, even friends.

The rest of us need to know that and understand it, if we didn't before. This is a big part of America, and we've been told that over and over and over again and none of us can deny it anymore. Denying it just gives them greater power.

As Hunter S. Thompson said, I piss down the throats of these Nazis and I'm too old to care whether they like it or not.
