..and the Oscar goes to
Documentaries really can change the world.
The beautifully disturbing The Act of Killing has sparked a debate about the mass killings in Indonesia like nothing before. When the film got Oscar nominated it forced the Indonesian regime to deny and publicly discuss it's bloody history. Hopefully the film will also make the US reveal their role in Indonesia's history more transparently. The groundbreaking narrative - a film about gangsters making a film about their killings - also tweaked the rules of documentary filmmaking.
Congrats to The Act of Killing for changing the world, despite missing out on yesterday's Oscar.
