askgwencooper:
Gwen had passed judgement too quickly. She’d seen confidence and optimism that were almost annoyingly remniscent of the sort of woman she’d been herself maybe five years ago and it had been far too easy to assume she wasn’t facing much more than company and yet another inconvenience. Gwen put on her best business smile. It was friendly and reassuring if not entirely genuine and she opened her mouth to express thanks, grab their room keys from the clerk, and just get on with the evening but the conclusion of Leona’s statement made her freeze in place.
“Oh?” She couldn’t jump to conclusions. Jack’s friends were a mixed bunch: Martha Jones was lovely and John Hart- well, they still had a proverbial hatchet buried somewhere, but, then again, knowing who Gwen and Jack were and what they did was not quite as uncommon as it had been before the Miracle. There was a slim chance Leona was only a curious civilian but Gwen quickly dismissed that possibility. “You get a new friend, you said?” She challenged, hating how paranoid it made her look.
Leona matched Gwen’s smile with just as fake and enthusiastic. It seemed that Jack had a certain type with women; calculating and proud. Of course, with Gwen, things were far different than they were with herself. Gwen came later, and thus Gwen was not what Jack had been taught by or truly loved by. Waiting, Leona raised a careful brow when it seemed to show recognition onto Gwen that the two had more in common than sharing a room.
“Of course,” she gave a slight incline of her head, never allowing her smile to drop. “I’ve known him for many, many years, it’s only fair and right I get to meet and befriend the woman he’s come to care so greatly for.” Turning her gaze towards the clerk, Leona gave him her card to charge before accepting the room keys and passing one over to Gwen. “You, my Dear, have many things to learn about Jack Harkness, many things he’d never want you to know.”
askgwencooper:
“’Too close’,” Gwen repeated under her breath, hoping Jack wouldn’t feel the need to elaborate as he’d already judged her actions unfavourably, but still unable to suppress a scoff. She wasn’t nearly close enough. She still needed to learn how this glove differed from Suzie’s and why the Weevils were willing to kill for it before she could manage an experiement or bring it anywhere near an actual corpse. Gwen was certain she could win over their support but she couldn’t risk losing Torchwood’s help and resources in the meantime and so had to comply.
One of the glove’s metallic fingers twitched on its own in a way Gwen told herself was only a trick of the light. Tempted as she was to ask for Jack’s imagined worst case scenario, Gwen just sorted the device into a lockbox as instructed. “I should clean this up,” she unabashedly displayed her injured forearm. The bite marks had stopped bleeding so they’d become a secondary concern until now- battle scars as far as Gwen was concerned, having rescued what she needed, no thanks to the teammates who hadn’t provided more than the location. “I’m not the best at first aid even when I’ve got both hands,” she admitted unhappily, wondering if Jack might have some sympathy after all. “Can I borrow Owen?”
“Yes, too close.” Jack repeated back, giving Gwen a sharper eye than he had before. What was she up to? “Hm,” he replied, moving around to start shuffling things around and to show that she really didn’t need to clean up anything. “I’ll help you.” He wasn’t about to let her do anything involving those gloves on her own.
Sighing, the Captain reached forward and wrapped his hand around her arm, just above the bite marks. “You’re lucky it was a Weevil, it could have been worse; a lot worse.” He frowned disapprovingly, as he began to assess the injuries himself. Still, Gwen was sharp enough to see that he was worried about her. Pausing when she asked about Owen, Jack raised a brow and looked up to meet her eye. Slowly he let go of her arm and placed both his hands up. “What? Am I not good enough to help? I mean, I know Owen has this whole ‘doctor degree’ thing going for him, but I think I know a thing or two on injuries.” He was largely teasing; even if he really wasn’t wanting her to get out of his sight.
Christmas Dinner
The Christmas dinner was always a big deal for the Holmes family. They usually never had dinners or family time, the only moments they had to meet each other was when their Mother told them to. Even though Mycroft had a file about his Mother, he always did what she asked if he could do so. Despite all, the Holmes brothers had very good parents.
Mycroft knew that he had to pick up his little brother, even just to make sure that Sherlock was at least presentable. You never knew with him. Mycroft wished that Sherlock would be more reliable, he was a Holmes after all and Mycroft didn’t want to have a loose-one in the family. But, Sherlock was that and even more. The elder brother knew that dealing with it was the only option left.
However, Mycroft always tried to fix what he could and this time Sherlock had to be fixable. There were no other options. It was about their Mother and her dinner. So, he arrived at Sherlock’s door and straightened the knocker without even noticing then he opened the door with his own pair of keys and entered the building “Oh, Mrs Hudson” Mycroft remembered to smile politely “Merry Christmas” he added afterwards “Thank you” she smiled knowing why Mycroft was there “He is upstairs, be nice, mh?” after saying this she left and Mycroft went upstairs, using his umbrella to push the door open that led to the living room “Sherlock?” he called his brother “Are you ready? We have to go”
@lionessmuses
Sherlock sat curiously in his favourite arm chair, not even bothering to use the sides of the chair, nor would he allow his feet to touch the floor. No, he sat wrapped under himself and almost like a human pretzel.
It was in this moment that he found himself lost within the day-time telly trash that seemed to always preoccupy his mind when he found that the rest of the world was just so boring.
“No, no, no!” He shouted, pulling a face and waving his arm exasperatingly at the screen. “He isn’t the father! Just look at him, the genetics and mannerisms are all wrong.” Sighing, irritably, Sherlock sat back up and readjusted himself when he heard the door to his flat open.
Sure steps, heavy steps... gained weight? No, third object used in walking... cane? No. Umbrella.
It didn’t take Sherlock much longer to know exactly who it was that had walked in, nor did it take his insufferable brother to open his mouth for him to know. Closing his eyes to prevent Mycroft from seeing him roll his, Sherlock spoke quickly in reply. “Yes, of course it’s Sherlock, who else would you expect to be in?” Opening one eye, he peered up at his elder brother. “Ready? Where are we going?” He went through his mind; mentally trying to search for any reason or promise he might have made for going anywhere with Mycroft that day.
askgwencooper:
Money seemed to be the only thing that spoke to people and got results faster than the sort of posture and manner of speaking that implied you were important. As the other woman already had both in her effortless sort of charm that made Gwen feel certain that both the accent and the resources offered were genuine, Gwen was forced to shut her mouth and think for a beat.
Her suitemate for the evening- it did seem official now -was striking and nearly intimidating. Distantly, Gwen regretted not bothering to brush her hair that morning. “We’ll make the most of it,” she resolved, her natural Welsh coming through as she couldn’t possibly keep playing posh for the whole night and now seemed as good a time as any to stop. “Gwen,” she added, wondering what harm it could do. “But- sorry, in what way is that a deal? What do you get?”
Leona watched Gwen carefully, observing her every move and wondering what was going on within the other woman’s mind. Slowly, a polite but tight smile spread across her lips. “Wonderful to meet you, Gwen.” She gave her newly found friend a nod before glancing down and keeping a secret smile to herself.
“Yes, very true.” She stated more to herself than to Gwen before raising her gaze back up and meeting the other’s. “My part of the deal is I get a new friend...” she paused and narrowed her eyes for a moment, tilting her head; deciding if she should reveal anything yet. Ultimately, she decided to seal the deal with just a small, but vital bit of information. Staring Gwen down with an unyielding gaze, Leona spoke crisply and at a low volume. “And I get to know the woman who has spent a good portion of her adult life with a certain Captain.”
askgwencooper:
“I like having it, I do. I like knowing where it is.” That sounded pathetic but it was the truth and she owed Jack that much. Suzie had died because she kept too many secrets and believed she could change the world all on her own. Rhys was dead because Gwen had been so desperate to protect him, she’d missed the obvious danger. So while she’d been drawn to the glove initially, she craved more than just the two minutes it would allow for a final goodbye and that would take research she didn’t presently have time for.
Unhappily sliding it off, she began preparing the device to be locked up for safe keeping, then paused, rubbing at the Weevil bites on her forearm and trying to meet her boss’ eyes, wondering just how much he understood. “You’re not surprised.”
Placing his hands on his hips, the Captain gave Gwen an appraising look. Turning away and clenching his jaw; he knew she was too close to the artifacts, something he should have prevented, but there wasn’t any point in going back and changing that. “I think you’re too close,” he voiced his thoughts momentarily before placing his lips into a tight, thin line.
He could feel her watching him, and though he wanted to let some of his walls down, he knew it was for the best to remain distant. “No, I’m not,” he replied, finally turning to face her while answering her question. “But you need to put it away before you... well, before something happens.” Mentioning Suzie might not be the best thing for him to do. Not yet.

😉 a starter based on the first thing in my wanted plots tag
“You’re telling me there is one hotel room left in this entire town?” Exasperated, Gwen knew the next best thing to making it home in time for Christmas would be spending it in a space with the privacy that would allow her to drop that fake English accent, apologise to her family via Skype, and finally examine the alien artefact she’d come all this way for.
Ignoring the useless desk clerk’s answer, she turned to face the woman who’d come into the lobby just after she did. “I’m not good at sharing, really not good at sharing,” she summarised, forgoing politeness and introductions. “Could I bribe you?”
Leona listened in silence as she watched the woman before her argue relentlessly with the desk clerk. She kept a thin, tight smile on her lips as she waited, figuring that the woman would turn around and speak to her. Stepping forward, Leona raised a brow and met the other’s gaze straight on.
“Bribe me? Oh dear.” An amused smirk appeared all too quickly before she brushed aside her and moved to speak with the clerk. “Switch our room with that of someone who is holding a larger and double bedded suite. Whatever the fee is, I will cover it. Any complaints and I shall cover it.” Her crisp English accent rang through before she turned to look back at the woman. “Leona, by the way. You’ll have your own bed, but I’m afraid we’ll have to share a room. Deal?”

💀 for a dark starter
“Could have saved so much time if you’d just told me where the other glove was.”
“And yet... you still would have complained. I don’t see how I’d win either way.” He watched her carefully before crossing his arms over his chest. “Why did you want to know where it was, anyway?”

The Interview [Closed]
rovingtimelord:
“All over the place,” James said, leaning against the counter and fiddling with the knickknacks. “Europe, Asia, Australia, Africa, the Americas… I just spent the last six months in Patagonia, actually. There was a thing. Well, three things. Well, three things and a lizard. Were you originally from across the pond? What brought you here?”
Scratching at the back of his neck as Jack asked him about himself, he considered answers. “I was born in London,” he said, “Spent quite a bit of time up in Glasgow when I was young, which is why my accent is all wonky. Studied physics, did terribly, ran off to go see the world when I was 21. Travelled - worked odd jobs. Loads of time cleaning dishes and working in the kitchen - picked up some cooking skills, if you ever need someone who knows his way around the stove. Baking too. Just don’t make me make pear tarts. I can fix most electronics, electrical systems and vehicles, I know about 1,000 varieties of tea… I spent some time in China and India actually. Studying tea. Fascinating subject.”
Jack leaned over onto the counter and nodded, placing his head in his hand as he listened. James was a world traveller, much like himself, which meant the man clearly enjoyed a vast variety of things. It also meant he might need time off.
“Okay, you are so going to have to tell me about the story with the ‘three things and a lizard’.” He sighed and pulled back, watching as Clara moved to take an order from a new customer. “Here, let’s go find an empty table to continue this...” he guided James over and sat down, before nodding to the seat in front of him.
“Born and raised in America, just decided it was time for me to travel; been around a few times myself. But ah, the UK has always captured my heart.” He smiled brightly at James. He listened intently to James’ upbringing and about all the odd jobs he had.
“Well James, one question more: are there any trips you have planned coming up in the next six months? I don’t have to ask about how comfortable you are around strangers, nor do I think I have to ask how you’ll be on a register. Otherwise,” Jack leaned back and held out his hand. “Are you willing to start tomorrow?”

James handed over two somewhat battered notes that looked like they had seen better days, before making a face at the paperwork. “Pleasure’s all mine, Jack,” he replied, shaking Jack’s hand vigorously. “Owner, hm? I have to say it’s a very nice place. I popped by here a year or so back, but I’ve been travelling.”
Glancing down at the form, he scribbled down his personal details. “So. What kind of things do you need to know about me? I hope lack of coffee type experience… thing… isn’t going to be an issue, because I’m usually more invested in my tea.”
“Travelling? Where to?” Jack’s brow rose as he moved over to begin making James’ coffee. “I’m a bit of a traveller myself, as you can tell by the accent. But I came here and fell in love with the place and just decided to start a cafe.”
He gave a shrug before handing the completed drink over. “Well, I’d like to get to know you a bit more before I decide to hire, so... tell me more about yourself, James.” He gave a solid nod before smiling. “Knowledge of tea really helps, but don’t worry about the coffee, I can teach you in no time.”

The barista nearly got that glazed over look that they all tended to get whenever James gave out his - perfectly simple - orders, but to James’ unending surprise, he rallied magnificently and managed to get it all down.
And get it all correct too. James felt slightly impressed. And extra sugar bits. He broke out in a bright grin. “Ohhh free shots too? If I didn’t know better, I’d say you were flirting with me,” he chuckled, blissfully and completely unaware that that was perhaps exactly what was going on. “I’m James. James Smith. And who are you?”
Jack let out a laugh, of course he was flirting with the man, but the man seemed to take it in gentle strides so at least it wasn’t a rejection. “James Smith, huh? Good name.” He winked before writing it on the cup.
“Alright James, here’s your total and...” Jack raised a brow, as he bent down to retrieve all the new hire stuff from under the counter. “Here’s all the things I’d like you to fill out while I interview you.” He smiled at him, “I’ll have your drink at the end of the bar and I’m Jack, Jack Harkness. Barista and Owner of this very fine establishment. Pleased to meet you.”

@lionessmuses
“Could I have…”
James paused and squinted at the board.
“A very-very large - largest size you have - coffee, six shots of expresso, with hazelnut, mocha and peppermint, make it a skinny, yes whipped cream, with those little crunchy bits on top that taste like sugar and are probably actually sugar, but prettier than sugar?”
He paused.
“And I’m also here to interview. Saw your sign on the door about hiring barristers.”
Jack’s optimistic grin quickly turned to one of quiet contemplation that soon turned into staring at the man before him.
Honestly.
Why did people always have to give their orders in the most difficult way? Smiling brightly again (because the guy was pretty good looking), Jack repeated the order back as he began to write on the cup. “Okay so a large peppermint mocha with hazelnut, skinny, with six shots, and whipped cream.” He paused and gave the man his most flirtatious smile. “and extra crystallized sugar bits.”
Since he was the owner he could get away with discounts from time to time. “two shots are on the house, and can I get a name before I consider hiring you?” He waited as he punched in the order onto the register.
“Alright, can anyone direct me to the person I need to talk to about a part time job?” Donna asked, directing her question to no one in general in the shop. She was new in town, and desperate for a job and while a barista wasn’t near her first choice, she figured it would be a good place to start until she found something more her cup of tea.
“That...” Jack walked around the counter and smiled politely at the red head. “Would be me, hello.” Sticking out his hand, Jack gave the woman a once over. “This would be my coffee shop and you’re in luck, we’re looking for seasonal hire. Have you been here before? You look new.”
