✎ 11.04.2019 // brain food from my study session yesterday and some autumn vibes!!
The category is: black women in ethereal moments.
the smell of rain on wet stone. a cool wind ruffling your hair, the evening like a damp kiss on your cheek, the tote bag of newly-discovered secondhand books heavy in your elbow. the light is rose and gold, and inside waiting for you there is tea, and warmth, and freshly baked lavender and lemon cake.
You know what
People really actually say “Oh Hamilton is on par with nazi propaganda because it glorifies racist men uwu” when the entire point of the musical was to paint the racist America with an ALL POC CAST in a MUSIC STYLE THAT WAS INVENTED BY POC created by a GODDAMN LATINO MAN WHO REGULARLY PERFORMS SAID MUSIC STYLE LITERALLY FOR A LIVING.
Why the HELL do you think the recurring message of immigrants being the lifeblood of the nation was so prominent? Why do you think they consistently brought up racism and being against slavery, why do you think every single racist white founding father was played by a person of color?
Like seriously, the entire reason the musical was made was for POC to see themselves on stage and to see THEMSELVES in the place of old racist white guys. The message was that America was built by immigrants and people of color.
Both fans and people who hate this musical just completely missed the entire point, and that is a goddamn shame because it really is a good musical if you have the audacity to *gasp* understand that things are not Exactly What is On The Package? Perhaps?
Or even perhaps actually listen to the musical instead of parroting some white person trying to grab at woke points? Maybe?
(white people please reblog this but if you clown in the tags I will fucking steal your knees. Not your kneecaps, your knees)
i know literally nobody who follows me gives a shit abt this but im going to give my opinions on some of the criticisms i’ve seen abt love, victor:: aside from a great amount of positivity, it’s getting some of the same negative reaction that love, simon got, which was that it’s too cliche and predictable and has too many tropes and blah blah blah. but bro. we are like... adults. this show was Not Made For Us. not every piece of LGBTQ content can be moonlight or portrait of a lady on fire or brokeback mountain or whatever other beautiful and nuanced LGBTQ media you can think of... it’s very obviously a show for younger people and thats perfectly okay!!! this show is abt high school SOPHOMORES!!! so if i see one more 20 something complaining abt how it was too cliche or whatever im gonna throw a fit!! did you want EUPHORIA??? bc Personally i was delighted to see a show abt a hispanic gay kid that wasn’t sexualized and wasn’t perfect but was crafted exactly like the kind of stuff i liked to watch when i was younger... and i am so glad it’s exactly the way it is for the sake of all the young (especially hispanic) LGBTQ kids out there who are seeing some rep, even if it’s not perfect or a cinematic masterpiece. happy mildly-flawed cliche media is so important to have for LGBTQ kids. the straights get to have it so im glad we’re starting to as well. a big part of the reason i Loved love, simon was bc it was lighthearted and fun while still being real and relatable. love, victor took on that same tone and it was just very nice to watch something that made me smile.
Pride was always a protest.
anyway it is the year two thousand and twenty and in my country alone 100,000+ are dead and over 40 million people (myself included) are unemployed due to a pandemic that has had a negligent-at-best-cruel-at-worst government response, black people are being murdered by police at horrific rates, trans people have the highest murder rate of any group, hate crimes (especially against immigrants) have spiked globally, and the president called for the military to shoot people protesting violent systemic injustice
if you will not use any platform at your disposal to call out injustice and bigotry then you have chosen your side
neutrality is not an option when one side is calling for the death of the other
