Visual diary- week five

Before class this week I read through/skimmed through the slides on moodle. And started thinking about what to do for assessment 2 - make what will happen. There were so many interesting artists who have done so many cool things, and it made me inspired to do things with people in focus.

In class Emma, Amy and I exposed a roll of film and I’m exited to see how it turns out when we develop it in week 7, along with the film I will expose myself in week 6. I’m really interested to see if I will be able to expose the pictures properly or not. It takes a lot of practice getting the aperature and shutter speed right so the film doesn’t come out over- or underexposed.

Visual diary - week four

In this class, October 10th, we are presenting our body of work. I have done my written statement and have done the layout - this is how it ended up looking

In week 3 I made 12 photograms, but I decided to only keep 11 of them in there, because I liked it better.

Visual diary - week 3

For this weeks class, I figured out how I wanted to do assessment 1 - see what will happen. I want to make a story with my photograms to show how nature is being polluted by trash. I worked in an organized fashion to keep track of what I was doing and how I was doing it.

I ended up with 12 nice photograms.

Visual diary - week two

This week I experimented with leaves, flowers baking-paper with writing on it and trash.

On the first attempt the words written on the baking paper were not visible as the ink was not opaque enough. It worked better once I darkened the writing. I liked the leaves on the first attempt more than the others because they overlapped some places which gave it more dimension than just black and white.

I also figured out that the trash I used kind of ended up as just a blob, so I need to find trash that is more distinct. I also want to experiment with folding the paper to give it more dimension as well. I would also like to experiment with something that would spread the light out unevenly like a piece of glass or a prism. I would have som cardboard or paper and cut out a place for the prism to sit so that the light would be distributed underneath the light-blocker.

Artist I like and want to draw inspiration from:

Monica Donovan, a Norwegian artist who takes pictures of trash she finds on the streets and makes the picture look beautiful. This artist is not related to darkroom photography or photograms, but I like what she does with the pictures she takes to spread awareness on pollution.

I like the way Pablo Picasso has layered his photograms. And I want to layer mine more to get more dimension.

I have also decided that I want my assessment to be focused around organic materials such as flowers, leaves, sticks etc. in a combination with trash from the streets. I also think I want my different pictures to describe how pollution is taking over nature. So the first couple pictures will have little to no trash and then as the pictures progress more and more will become trash.

Visual Diary - week one

In the aftermath of the historical event that was the climate strike on September 20th 2019, I wanted to make art depicting littering, pollution, global warming and climate change. I have taken the strong, emotional words of the young climate activist Greta Thunberg at the United Nations General Assembly this week, and written them on recycled baking paper.

I’m excited to see if the words are opaque enough to be visible on the photogram or if I need to redo it with darker marker.

I will also be using trash for my photogram, and I’m interested in what types of trash will look best. Some forms will probably leave a stronger silhouette and some will be more gradient, but I’m not sure yet what will make the picture better.

I will not have the trash prepared beforehand, because I want to pick up the trash I find on my way to class, which will allow chance to do its’ work in how the photogram ultimately will look.
