Synopsis:
You thought the Head Housemaiden would know how to help you. Would know about Wish Craft. And would know to break it. That was dumb. You're dumb. You should know by now nobody can help you. Not your friends, not The King, not Head Housemaiden. So get up. The show's back on stage.
A rewrite of Acts 5 and 6, focusing on additional attempts to break the Wish or find a loophole (lmao) in it. Explore the House again, break into locked rooms and take people's things in the middle of the night. Befriend a cat and try to ignore how your friends are remembering things that never happened. At least not yet. I'm sure it's fine.
New Content:
> 2 - 5 hours of new scenes, replacing most of Acts 5 and 6
> 2 edited and 17 (20, if you count each "panel") new pictures
> A few new overworld sprites for items and characters (which I'm not sure how to count)
> A cat you can pet, name, feed, and introduce to your friends
> 3 new ways to die
> Getting frozen in time now brings back some... memories...
New items:
> Lockpicks - for breaking and entering
> Pesticide - contains arsenic
> Notebook - so you don't forget
> Beatrice - a stuffed toy for emotional support
> Axe - kill him dead
New areas:
> Music room
> The archive
> A forgotten room
New story beats (SPOILERS)
> Learn how to reflect the King's attack
> Start a fire. Two of them, in fact
> Remember what The Country was like
> Spend more time with Mal Du Pays against your will
> Fight through the House again, but this time your allies remember they've been here before
> Lose a tooth
Installation Guide:
- If you play the game through Steam, make sure you're not syncing up your files with the cloud. Please remember to backup your files.
- Unzip the mod files and drop them inside your game folder (The location will depend on your individual settings and the site from which you purchased the game.)
- Allow the mod files to replace those of the vanilla game where applicable.
- The mod was made on the game version 1.0.6.3. It is untested on any other ones.
- I strongly recommend starting a new game after installation. The mod gathers information about what extra content you've done through the loops (I recommend doing as much of it as possible before diving into Act 5), and installing it to a save file that takes place later on might cause a lot of issues.
Please let me know of any bugs or typos you encounter. It's just me, a sleep deprived non-native english speaker re-reading the thing at 2 in the morning, so there's surely a lot of these left despite my best efforts. No beta read we die like Siffrin etc.
This work of art was made without the use of AI at any point in its creation. I do NOT consent for any part of it to be used in training of any AI.
srdytuygi I had so much funnnn with once upon a wish <3 I loved all the memories but I think the 'Isa's gone' one with Odile was my favourite XD thank you so much for sharing your awesome work!!
sqghtaov awh thank you!!! It always makes me spin in a circle like an excited little dog when people tell me they've had fun with my thing teehee!!
I'm so so glad you enjoyed it, the memories were really fun to write and it makes me so happy people enjoy the gang being silly! And thank YOU so much for playing!
siffrin says "colors" instead of "shades" after looping back after reflecting the king's attack
didnt get a screenshot but the line was something about siffrin pressing their palms into their eyes until they saw colors
I'm actually surprised, I've had quite a few people comment on it as an oversight when I did put it in on purpose!
It's meant to be an exaggeration, a figure of speech if you will - when you press your eyes too hard for a bit too long you start seeing weird things that aren't really there and there's no way you're actually seeing them (don't try it though, it's probably bad for your eyes), in our reality it would be like seeing swirling stars, unicorns, or the hat man!
I suppose I could change it to 'seeing stars' but I think I already used that phrase somewhere else (plus the inclusion of stars gives it a bit more weight when it comes to Siffrin specifically) and also it's just more fun!
The idea was to read about him seeing colours and go "yeah ok buddy. you're unwell. and probably dehydrated."
Hello, I recently finished your mod and had a great time during my playthrough. While I think you did a wonderful job with the majority of the writing. I noticed a few moments that come across as culturally insensitive in a way I doubt you intended given the nature of what the forgotten island represents in isat.
To name a few moments that stand out in my mind. The blood craft room would be one. While I understand the intended reading was to show the desperation of a lover attempting to get back their lost love. The elements present in the room combined with the party's dialogue bare an unfortunate resemblance to the blood libel myth. A Foreigner to the land doing evil forbidden blood rituals in a hidden locked away room, the party calling Siffrin's language "scary"/ "cursed" and expressing an extra level of disturbance when interacting with the room. All together paints an uncomfortable picture.
Another lesser one I noticed was nearing the end during the party's last climb of the house. Siffrin mentions his country's military training children as young as elementary school in combat. I admit I am unsure of the intent here, I could have missed something. While there is nothing wrong with portraying the island with its own set of issues, but with the forgotten island representing colonized lands.I question the idea of making violence and a strong military force part of their culture. Especially when contrasted against the Vaugardian party members' reaction to this information as uncivilized compared to their country's treatment of children. This paints an image of the island as particularly dystopian compared to its more Western European-based counterpart while also playing on the idea of the child soldier idea often used to justify violence against these places.
Again, I don't think you meant any harm when writing any of this and I apologize if my wording comes across as accusing you of such. I did otherwise enjoy my time with the mod. But these small things did sour my experience with it.
Cut because it's going to be long, sorry!!
Okay I admit I'm completely unfamiliar with that myth! Huh, that's awkward.
I'll put some of my thought process behind these scenes, but the tl;dr is that it was taken from my personal experiences and the polish culture and mentality surrounding our history taken to logical extremes.
Well from my (incorrect) perspective the blood thing wasn't supposed to be something that's connected with the country at all. Rather a vaugardian trying to bring back their forgotten lover through any means necessary, the blood craft is just one thing they found for it and the fact that it just so happens to be a wish craft ritual was a coincidence I don't think even the book's authors realised. I think it would be an underground outlawed knowledge regardless of where you were.
I'll be honest - I don't know what was the original inspiration for the forgotten country or if it ever had one or just left it completely up to us, but to me the King especially feels like a lot of intense patriots I met through my life who view their country as their whole identity and feel an immense amount of pride for what their ancestors did and fought for. To the point of seeing their own country as one that can do no wrong and everyone else is an enemy. Even our allies. It's just us against the world. The unbridled love for the country and seething hatred for everyone else, the martyrdom, the constant feeling of being threatened by everyone around you. Check comments on any patriotic songs, you'll find them too!
As for the party's perspective... yeah it doesn't really come across it with that myth in mind, but my intent was to showcase stereotypes and how the vaugardians were taught to fear the forgotten country and its people as dangerous and associated its language with evil magic. An effect of centuries of conflict, guerilla warfare, and uprisings from the island's people. Also possibly century old propaganda that became too deeply rooted in collective consciousness. It's something that I took from my own experiences and stereotypes associated with the polish and slavic people as a whole. You'd be surprised how often people see cyrylic alphabet and immediately they get all jittery or how often its letters are used in english words to be edgy (Я, И, Ц, П are common offenders here).
They're supposed to be in the wrong for this - they assume the writing is evil magic but it's love letters! Sweet, innocent, mushy love letters.
As for the military thing. It was (once again) based on my own country and my own experiences, I imagine the forgotten country with that deep rooted generational trauma of being under constant threat of larger and more powerful nations. With it's history riddled with conflict for a right to exist, with their own culture and home being something that had to be fought for and the current generation being constantly reminded how their ancestors fought and died to make sure they can even speak their own language.
It's meant to showcase the desperation, rather than any form of 'barbarism' - that train of thought is something I grew up in! I don't know if you're familiar with polish history but lord do the schools here don't let you forget. We're taught about wars and death and country independence since kindergarten, we visit monuments and graves of military martyrs and sing songs about killing the germans for a good grade, which in retrospect IS pretty weird. This is what made the country disappear in the first place - the collective wish of it's inhabitants to be safe and not have to be constantly on edge! The tragedy of not wanting to lose something so bad that you're the only one who can ever enjoy it, you know? Sounds familiar?
And while Sif remembers it as fully being part of the military, it would've been just a few classes to get familiar with it, meet some soldiers, do some drills, march around the gym, get a sword. With such a small island I think military service was mandatory and kids were just made used to it. It was a part of life and being a grown-up.
Again, these are not excuses it's just my thoughts behind these things! I will look into the blood myth thing for sure, thank you for letting me know. You're being very kind about it as well!
And I'm really sorry for making you feel uncomfortable by this! I truly did not mean for it, and I'll try to reword it better. Maybe delete some parts too, if you think it's best. If you find or remember more moments that leave a bad taste in your mouth, please don't hesitate to let me know!
Good thing I can still update it. Now if you excuse me,
Hi, playing the once upon a wish mod right now , but I’m pretty sure im softlocked because for some reason the book i need to interact with in the library to get Mira’s CARROT method is uninteractable. Like, there’s no glittering or anything nor can I interact with it. Do you have ideas on how to fix it maybe? Or if I’m doing something wrong?
Great mod btw!
Hmm I've checked the code, and there really shouldn't be an option to lock it off from being interacted with entirely? There should always be some kind of text. So that's pretty odd to begin with...
Is it for learning the CARROT method in order to defeat the King for the first time or is it during Act 5? I suppose the game might be confused if it's the latter since both switches are active simultaneously, but during testing it seemed to work fine? Have you gotten the prompt to go read it when talking to her? Maybe reloading the game and trying to brute force it could work eventually if the stars align but hmm...
I'll try to compile all the code in one place, maybe the game will be less likely to get confused :0
In the meantime, try talking with Mira and Loop to see at what point the game thinks you should be and try to follow what it tells you, if you have an earlier save going back to it could also work to reroll the switches if any of them got lost in the sauce.
Version 1.07 is just a bunch of typo corrections!
Also the two hat ending fix and 3 more dreams where you hang out with your brother(s).
Also some clarification in the READ ME file about the progression, and extra clear warnings about vanilla save files. I realise me going "it's not recommended" was a bit of a weird way to say "you WILL get stuck and there's nothing we can do". Sorry.
But yeah, that's kind of it! Shoutout to everyone on typo duty, you guys can read SO WELL!
So I did a little soul searching and decided that I'd make a discord server ater all, since it's the most common and I don't want people to make an account and learn a completely new layout, I know it can be scary.
That being said, we hate discord. Here's the discord server! I put the dream transcripts in there if you want to look.

Could you please tell me how can we get Isa to kill siffrin?
Sure!
It's the ending to the event where you get stuck together in a hole. This event takes place after you've gone through the snack break before the 2nd Floor a few times, and then interacted with the switch hidden behind the pillar in the room with the Crest Sadness on that floor. The pillar is sparkly, you'll find it!
The event is already finished in the save file provided (since ideally it'd take place around act 2 or 3, where I think it fits best, but you could always do it later, I guess.) and Siffrin won't want to go through it again. If you want to just see the event without starting over, the whole thing is also in the walkthrough at around 5 minute mark, right at the start! Good luck, soldier.
Hello, It seemms i have been getting trouble inputting the save you made and im unsure if im doing something wrong.
Its in the save folder but its not appearing. Am i doing something wrong? (The mod downloaded succefully though)
Hmm that's so odd... I'm not an expert on save files, if you put the right thing in the right place then everything should be going right as well. In the READ ME file I put as detailed description about the save file as I could so let's do some troubleshooting?
I'd make a new save file on slot 5 (for our purpose it doesn't matter if it's from a new game or an extension from some other one), then close the game and check if it appeared in the save folder, and if so replace it with the modded save file. This could do the trick.
If not, then it could be that Steam or whatever other site you use might store save data elsewhere or just in the cloud. If it does, then the option to disable it from doing so should be in the settings.
These are the two things that come to mind for what might've happened, please let me know if it works :0
Have you considered making a discord server for Once Upon a Wish?
Hmm, actually no I haven't! It might be a good solution to put all the bugs and typos people find there and maybe help out with them, that's very true. I guess it just never crossed my mind there'd be enough people who care about it to make a server for this especially? It might also be a valid place to put all the transcripts of tear dreams, which is something I've been wondering about.
With the tomfoolery Discord is doing at the moment I'm not sure if it'll last, but would that be something you're interested in? I could totally make one
I cant tell if your mod did this but generally my game has been broken as hell like the zone out just not leaving and being used in battles its hilarious also allows movement in dialogue specifically when in the inbetween rooms of the floors and for some reason that sometimes moves the other family members
Yeah, the speed through bug thing does pop out every so often, I know of it and I try to catch and disable them whenever I can but they're so unpredictable! It's like whack a mole! If you remember what was the last line of dialogue before it appeared please let me know - I'm hunting them! But also yeah I agree it's quite silly. Siffrin has had enough they're zoning out constantly now, I understand.
As for the other things?? Might just be demons I have no other explanation. I combed through the code to try and find a lost switch somewhere but everything seems fine! There must be something but I just don't know what! What's happening here!! There's not even a coded way to move the other characters! Get a priest or something! /j
