COMPULSARY QUESTION 2

Manifesto is able to help me to strengthen my design communication by giving me a clear headspace and aspiration to guide every creative decision I make.  With manifesto, I feel my communication is able to get stronger as I get to design with purpose rather than guesswork. It helps me justify my choices in colour, layout, typography and storytelling. Ensuring that every element aligns with my artistic vision. Instead of me creating  designs randomly, I create with intention, confidence and consistency. Using manifesto allows me to keep my focus when I’m feeling lost , reminding me of the bigger goals I am working towards as a designer  

A manifesto that I feel I can relate to is the artistic manifesto. As a designer, my artistic manifesto defines my creative identity and it guides the majority of the decisions I make throughout my work. It helps me to understand the emotions I want to convey and it reminds me of the aesthetic values I uphold, especially when I am unsure of which direction I am taking. By shaping a clear point of view, my manifesto allows me to stand out and express what makes my style unique. It also enables me to reflect on my growth, showing how the challenges and inspirations have shaped the way I design today. This allows me to design with a purpose, creating works that not only look visually appealing but also provides depth in my overall portfolio.

My artistic manifesto helps shape my design process in a real and practical way. Whenever I struggle with choosing a colour palette or a font for my designs, it reminded me to follow my emotions and values I want my designs to convey. For example, When I was doing my assignment for Branding, I originally wanted to use red for my packaging background, but after getting feedback from my teacher, he said I should try and alternate two different colours and I agreed, my manifesto helped me to stay open minded, experimental and confident in trying new directions. It also helps me to make decisions quiker because I already knew the principles I stand by such as a clean and meaningful visual.  Even during moments of doubt, my manifesto pushes me to stay aligned with my identity.  It guides me through challenges shaping my overall design thinking process.

In conclusion, exploiting the concept of manifesto has became an essential part of how I approach design. It not only sharpens the way I express my ideas but it also provides a s steady foundation that helps my creative thinking. Through my manifesto, I have a clearer understanding of what my style and direction is, it allows me to develop with clarity and intention. It keeps me grounded when I face uncertainty and it encourages me to trust my instinct while being open minded to different ideas.

COMPULSARY QUESTION 1: MANIFESTO

Based on my learnings about manifesto, it’s a form of expression for artist to showcase their emotions and true intent. Manifesto is an ongoing event, especially showcased innovatively in the modern era (digital platforms). Through examining how manifestos have impacted both society and art, we can see that the transformation goes beyond pen and paper. Its global impact is prominent and ever growing, reflecting how artistic expression can adapt to new technologies while continuing to communicate the artist message effectively.

The above summarises the high level overview of the manifesto. Now I shall dive deeper into Manifestos development and impact. In the modern era, manifestos have evolved from pen and paper to digital platforms. Currently, with the rise of digital platforms, this has allowed manifestos to create new forms, voices, and purposes.  For example, a current era manifesto would be the Digital Creator’s Promise. Digital Creator’s Promise represents authenticity, mental health awareness and constant evolution. Current manifestos are gentler, reflective, and personal as they focus on healthy digital practice rather than societal revolution. While for Traditional Manifestos,  it is loud, aggressive and revolutionary. In 1909, an itailian poet published The Futurist Manifesto in a newspaper, and it launched the futurism art movement,  celebrating speed, machines. The target audience are a broad range of people from political thinkers, intellectuals and artists. While Digital Creator’s Promise on the other hand is targeted towards digital content creators and social media influencers.

The Futurist manifesto is loud, aggressive spreading through printed media to thinkers and artists. It celebrated innovation, disruption and technological dominance. While Digital Creators’ Promise is gentle, thoughtful and is shared across social platforms to creators. It emphasises authenticity, mental wellbeing and mindful use of technology, which encourages healthier and more meaningful digital interactions. While the futurist manifesto pushed for revolution and destruction of the past, Digital Creator’s Promise focuses more on growth, community and responsible creativity, highlighting the change from focusing on industrial progress to caring about responsible digital use.

Understanding manifesto allows me as a digital artist to develop my own principles, aesthetic direction  and most importantly improve on my art directive. Manifesto allows me to build a recognizable identity  for myself and  improve my decision making in typography, storytelling and visual style. In short, understanding manifesto helps me to grow creatively, ethically and confidently as a digital artist. Additionally, understanding manifestos enhances my confidence, allowing me to take bold risks while staying true to my vision.

WEEK 3 – This Is How You Connect Practice with Society

In week 3, we were tasked to film a 1.5 minute video to address any local issue by using a phone. My groupmates and I chose to highlight one of the most common issues, both locally and globally, which is often overlooked. Many people will frequently encounter a unhygienic toilet that has tissues scattered all around, and unflushed toilets. We acted out the issue through acting by showing a group of friends entering the toilet, being shocked at how unhygienic it is and how frustrating that made us feel. Our visual storytelling made our message easy to understand for everyone.

At the end of the video, we pulled out papers that reads “ Keep the toilet clean” to remind others that small acts like flushing properly and disposing of tissues correctly can make a big difference not only for us but the cleaners as well. The video is simple but it conveys a strong message encouraging people to be responsible when it comes to public spaces.

While doing this project, I learned the importance of connecting creative works to real life events. This process showed me that no matter how simple an idea is, communicating with others effectively can create a positive change.

For my future assignments, I will apply this by identifying the problems that matters to the community. Afterwards, creating designs that conveys the message in an engaging and accessible way. By doing this, it not only helps me complete a task but it allows me to create a work that is meaningful and relevant.

WEEK 6 – How Do I Think About My Thinking Processes?

In week 6, I was tasked to go to Sim Lim Square with my groupmates. I had to scan my surroundings to look at all the different logos and see which stood out to me. The logo that caught our eyes was Zepplin & Co, This cafe incorporates coffee and desserts with music and headphones. While the concept is unique, I did notice that the typography of the logo design was narrow, spacing felt cramped, and the colour used was not memorable enough to catch our attention. The logo didn’t match the cafe’s ambience as it looked similar to PC gaming cafes.

This made me question myself on how I could redesign the logo to make sure it properly reflects the brand’s identity. I started by analysing and brainstorming for solutions. Each of us sketched one design as we all had different ideas, but I was mainly playing around with typefaces and colours that I feel could make the logo more approachable. By us sketching out different versions of it, I thought to myself that design thinking is not about finding the perfect idea immediately, but about trying different designs, refining it to make it better, and reflecting on it.

This exercise taught me that the thinking process is very repetitive as I have to figure out the problem, and from there, I have to slowly think of an idea that is better and stronger. There would be trial and error throughout the process for it to be perfect

For my future assignments, I will definitely apply the same thinking process by first observing all the details, questioning myself on how I could improve the design and lastly experimenting with different solutions to see which is better. By doing it this way, I can create designs that are thoughtful, practical and last but not least creative.

WEEK 2- This Is How You Connect Theory and Practice

In week 2, we were tasked to explore theory and practice by doing self reflection on ourselves. The five words that best describes me would be introvert, bubbly, blur, noisy and awkward. Each and every word describes my different type of personality and all of those were able to give me a good start when it comes to creative exploration.

On the logical side of things, I think about the words and its meaning of it and try to figure out how I could express in just shapes and forms. For Example, “noisy” could be bold, bright and energetic features. “Introvert” could be quiet tones and minimal forms. “Bubbly” could be playful shapes and pastel colours. “Blur” could be hazy textures, unclear lines and softness in shapes. Lastly, for “awkward” it could be unusual details and imbalance.

During the exercise, I did different sketches to see how all these different traits of mine could translate to a visual identity. This process has multiple failed attempts, as not every idea worked or matched my personality traits. The logo I created combines all of my personality traits into one visual design. The logo shows my personality traits in a well balanced design while having applied technical skills like composition and proportion

I am going to apply the same method in all of my future assignments in order to help ease my design process and give my work a strong concept.I will be doing it by starting with reflection and theory, and afterwards using practical skills and design software to bring all my ideas to life.

WOII Compulsary: in summary

At first, I thought WOII was those lessons that wasted my time and I wouldn’t really care about it but after a while, I would say my experience in WOII has the biggest impact out of all the other classes as this is the only subject that opens my eyes as they teach about different ways of viewing designs and types of designs I have never heard of.  How WOII helped me is actually when it comes to branding. I am someone who loves making logos and aesthetics plays a part in my design as it is important to look at something that is visually appealing and can have a significant influence on the overall product to make it stand out and attract an audience. Recently, My partner and I wanted to start a shoe business, all he said was that he wanted it to have a vintage look, I did plenty of research on it and created a list of what I wanted in the design. It was hard at first but ever since we had a session talking about aesthetics, it helped me in terms of my design as it allows me to stretch my visual boundaries, being curious, and embrace experimentation.

WOII: WEEK 12- Art Ecosystems

I really had a blast in this session as we were looking at year 3 diploma and BA graphic design students’ work. It was incredibly inspiring to see the range of ideas, concepts, and visual outcomes they were exploring. I learned a lot from them especially from the BA students as they had amazing ideas despite them not completing it and I could never think of ideas like they do, I love how their research is detailed even to the smallest things. I’m more interested in branding, and while that remains my passion, I have to say that I learned a lot from the BA students and I am planning to start thinking the way they do.

During this session, it really made me think about who I am as a designer, I am planning to start thinking the way they do and especially doing a deep analytical driven research as I think that research is always the starting point of creating the design and also a key point in making my designs better and stronger overall. This session was extremely eye-opening and motivating and slightly demotivating as their works are amazing and it made me doubt my creativity ever since I saw all the graduating year works.

In terms of making an impact as a designer, I want to deeply understand people’s needs and desires. I would want my design to create amazing works that allows my audience to resonate with it and hope it could make an impact on them positively.

WOII: WEEK 11 - Postmodernism

Postmodernism in design embraces playfulness, non-traditional aesthetics, and wide varieties. It introduces irony, complexity, and contradiction into the design itself. It also often blends historical references. I did some research and I realised that majority of the design uses bold colours and shapes, playfulness, humor, complexity, modern and historical references. These are some designers that I searched who is known for using postmodernism in their work, Robert Venturi, Michael Graves, and Philip Johnson. It was my first time learning about it as I have only seen designs that are in current trends on my Pinterest board. I am intrigued by the design as I didn’t know modern and historical references could actually go well with each other. In the future, in any of my designs, I would love to add it into my design as it helps me to challenge myself and also help me get out of my comfort zone as I am always stuck in a specific theme.

For my studio assignment, I had to do something similar as I was researching and designing for my artist Reid Miles. I would say his designs were already modern during the 90s. I decided to incorporate his style into my design but with a little twist from the modern trend. I played with strong colours like orange, green in the designs and I love how it turned out as it still has this vintage vibe to the designs. In summary, I personally think  incorporating vintage into a modern design is unique as you don’t really see it as much in the current trend and I would continue to find ways to make it better

WOII Compulsary: week 5 & 6 - Design Analysis and Field Trip

What are some notable ideas from today’s session?

For week 5, we learned about “How to Analyze a Work of Design” in this lesson I learned that analyzing involves examining various elements and principles to understand how they work together to achieve a specific purpose or communicate a message. While the teacher was showing the slides, I was amazed by the way the designers managed to create such amazing hand-crafted work that not only looked stylish but also functional. What I loved about this lesson was the way some designers tried to show awareness for the environment by creating things from recycled materials and turning them into something fashionable.

For the activity, we had to bring our well-crafted objects. I brought my phone case and my own crafted figurines. The only functional thing was my phone case as it was designed only for my lip-gloss as I need it everywhere I go and for my figurings, it wasn’t functional, but it was the most memorable thing, it was during Christmas when we decided to challenge who created the cutest figuring. My groupmates and I had to categorize our objects by material and theme. It was easy for us as what we brought was mostly objects that were functional to us. It was fun hearing their reasons on why these objects were meaningful and about how their items work.

For week 6, we went to Golden Landmark Shopping Complex. We were tasked to walk around and take pictures of things that were connected to the object that we brought, and I chose a crochet flower as it is meaningful, especially if your partner gives it to you. For the other part of the assignment, we had to take pictures of a theme, and I chose to go for “Memory” While I was walking around haji lane, I came across this shop that sells figurings, and I saw a lot of cartoon characters from my favourite childhood shows and the memory came flooding back in. I am someone who loves meaningful things. Hence, that’s why I decided to go for memory.

WOII: WEEK 1 - Phenomenology

What are some notable ideas from today’s session?

For week 1, we learned about “Phenomenology”. From what I understand, a phenomenon is an observable fact, feature, or event. In design, phenomenology helps to emphasize the understanding and interpretation of the human experience. It showcases the human interaction with objects, spaces, or systems related to design. Phenomenology focuses on human experience and understanding how people can relate to the objects and spaces around them. It encourages designers like myself, to think outside the box, understanding the key aspects of human senses and perception. I would want to incorporate Phenomenology in design as it focuses on user experience, perception, and emotions. I will Incorporate it by prioritizing sensory interaction, empathy, and context in designs and I would think it would definitely help me improve in the way I think.

In the activity we did in class, we had to either draw out shadow or time. I decided to focus on time (the time students usually arrive in class) as it is an observable fact. I tend to reach school an hour earlier and based on my observation, most students arrive within the timeframe of three to thirty minutes before class starts. We had to present our work to the class, and I loved all the different perspectives of time from the rest of my classmates. Looking at some of my friend’s work I realised that time is minimal because one day we will all perish and that is why you should spend your time wisely with your loved ones. In the past, I would never think about the future but thanks to this activity I am extremely grateful and open-minded to things like this.

WOII: WEEK 2 - Aesthetics

What are some notable ideas from today’s session?

What I learnt from this lesson is that aesthetics in design, is about creating something that is functional but also visually appealing at the same time. Aesthetics is about choosing the right colour schemes, fonts, and layout. In my eyes, aesthetics is just not about how nice it looks but it is about the form of the shapes (it could be organic or geometric), the type of texture (if it is rough or smooth), colours (if the colours compliment each other). I did some research and found this quote from Oscar Wilde that talks about aesthetic “Ethics, like natural selection, make existence possible. Aesthetics, likes sensual selection, make life lovely and wonderful, fill it with new forms, and give it progress, and variety and change”. This quote made me start thinking deeper into why aesthetics is so important in design as looking at something that is visually appealing can have a significant influence on overall product to make it stand out and attract audience.

For week 2 activity, we were tasked to go to Sim Lim Square and take some pictures of signages that we think are interesting. Once we were done, we had to think of a back story analysis just by looking at the signage we chose. Back story analysis adds depth, context, and meaning to the design process. Doing this activity really provided me with a different perspective because I have never done such thorough analysis on a design before. In the future, I would learn to do deep analysis when it comes to my assignments as it helps me to understand and best of all make my artwork more interesting.

COMPULSAY QUESTION 2

The principles of critical thinking can be applied to all other modules, depending on the specific task at hand.

The interpretation and analytical skills that I have attained from critical thinking allowed me to master the subject area studio. Having done elaborate research in critical thinking, this has allowed me to utilise the same methodology for my research framework. Another concept I incorporated from critical thinking would be segmentation. Specifically, the use of hierarchical segmentation to arrange objects from home.  To further elaborate on the analytical skill. During my Typo Sensory class, heavy interpretation and analysis was required during branding management.

For the craft module, I would say that growth mindset and decision-making plays a major role. For growth mindset is because it allows us to step out of our comfort zone and try something new (Example, a new medium). Growth mindset helps us in terms of embracing failure and trying again and again till we are satisfied with the outcome. For decision making, is figuring out how we want to interpret it. Decision making is the stage of the process where a design is put down on paper by drawing out all the different elements, possibly adding labels and notes where necessary.

For photography and digital skills module, analysing and interpreting plays a big role when it comes to photography as it helps in composing shots and understanding the perspectives. It really depends on the task but majority of the time we would need to analyse our environment to see which angle shots are nice. Lastly for digital skills, The creative thinking aspect to craft responses in critical thinking can be incorporated in the process of completing my digital art piece.

What kinds of collaborative projects would you like to do?

I would love to collaborate with Faculty of Contemporary Music as I love to sing and listen to music. Creating an album cover and rotoscope music video was always a dream of mine. It plays a big role in terms of visual representation of the artist and their music. My passion for music started at a very young age, given the tools I would love to utilise this medium of expression.

What kind of final project would you like to do?

I would like to do my own branding and packaging for cosmetics and food. I have found an interest doing it when I was in ITE as it is fun and it shows who I am as a designer. The whole process of it is memorable as you get to see how your design gets better throughout the whole process of the making. Upon completion of the branding and packaging, i felt a sense of satisfaction and completion.

Considering projects for community organizations that you might want to work with?

I would want to work with Singapore Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals(SPCA) due to my love and care for animals. I would love to create posters and rotoscope videos to promote the organization in hopes of achieving an emotional impact with the public . One of my main objectives from this campaign is to prevent animal cruelty globally.

How might CTS A help you professionally?

As a designer, critical thinking allows me to analyse cliental, evaluate design options, and improve creative thinking. It helps me to assess user feedback, identify faults, providing effective solutions. Design thinking allows an individual to innovate and make intuitive decisions, ultimately leading to wholistic masterpiece. The process of evaluating and brainstorming critical thinking questions would be incorporated in my daily design thinking process.

Q1. Describe your understanding of critical thinking that you had before the class, and reflect on what you may have learned.

-At first I thought critical thinking was about using your brain but on a deeper level. But after week 1 lesson on critical thinking I learned that it isn't something that you can master straight away as it takes time. Critical thinking is about problem solving and knowing how to handle a certain project. Critical thinking is about knowing how to question, analyse, evaluate and make a judgement about what you read, hear, say, or write and the end result is to have good beliefs

Q2. What have you learned about Mindfulness?How might you integrate this into your learning environment?

-What I have learned about mindfulness is that I need to be careful and pay attention to my present moment. I also learned that I need to be open, accepting and discerning attention to everything I do. Lastly, I need to accept and love myself as I am always looking down on myself and having negative thoughts about my appearance.

- How I will integrate this into my learning environment is to be accepting and open whenever I have negative feedback as those words are able to help me grow as a person. 

-I need to start being positive and start accepting my imperfections as no one is perfect.

Q3. Describe an eventful moment you have experienced in this class.

-I would say the most eventful moment I have experienced is making new friends with local students and international students. I am glad that I made friends with international students as they taught me new words in their native language and I am able to learn about their cultures which is really fascinating to me as I am someone who loves to learn new things.

CTS Question 1

How do you understand the Critical Thinking Skills module?

After attending 13 weeks of critical thinking, I realize that it plays a major role in our daily lives helping us through logical reasoning, problem-solving, evaluation techniques and effective communication. It provides training to discipline ourselves and make better decisions in the future. Teamwork is another key concept that we benefit from extensively in this class.

I would usually take charge whenever it comes giving out responsibilities as i know what my group mates would want to do. Whenever my group mates do not have an answer to the question i would help them out by starting the sentence and finding articles for them.

As a whole CTS has provided me with the ability to collaborate with my class and improve my leadership skills.

Which was your favorite activity or session? Do you personally have an alternative visual metaphor?

Personally, my favorite activity is building monument for well renowned athletes. As designer myself, I would use an illustrative method to design a visual representation such as posters and creating tribute jerseys. Every athlete has their own well-known attribute, my illustrative methods would showcase this in an artistic manner.

Which was your favorite activity or session? Which aspects of it were memorable to you?

In class, my group and I built a monument for famous athletes who passed. We had a great time collaborating and using different materials. There were no conflicts as everyone participated and shared amazing ideas. This positive teamwork made the project enjoyable and also boost our understanding of the athlete’s contributions and legacies. It was a fun experience.

What is the value of working in a group?

Working in a group allows me to understand different views and effectively enables me to communicate with my group mates.  Shared activity can reduce stress, while boosting motivation. Working in a group can help spark the creativity in everybody as we all have different ideas which leads to original ideas. In summary working in a group can enhance learning and can lead to satisfying outcomes such as developing stronger communication skills and sharing diverse perspectives.

What do you wish you did more of, or better?

There wasn’t sufficient time given to build the monument. Given a time extension to redesign our work, I would have chosen to utilize clay as my medium. This allows me to sculp different athletes in detail engraving their names on each piece.

CTS WEEK 3

Q1. We talked about “Self-management”, “Self-awareness”, “Empathy” and “Relationship management”. Which aspect do you think you are the strongest at, and which is something you should try to improve? Discuss with reference to today’s activities, and even your studio collaboration.

Personally, I would say “Empathy” is my strongest as I can easily relate to other people as i didn’t really have the best childhood experience, I tend to learn from my childhood traumas and help other people if they are ever going through something similar to me or be a listening ear to someone be it a stranger or my friends.

I would love to improve on “Self-awareness” as I tend to not be aware of my surroundings which can be extremely dangerous, lacking appropriate planning for the future as I tend to make irrational decisions based on emotional desire. Therefore,  bringing about  consequences in the long term. How i would improve on my self awareness is by writing down my goals as it can help provide some direction in my life, talking to my friends as they can evaluate you honestly and i am accept their comments constructively and keeping a daily journal as doing journaling each day can help me better understand my emotions and encourage regular reflection.

CTS WEEK 2

Q1. Describe your strengths and weaknesses as a collaborator. What did you do well, and what are some areas to improve? Discuss with reference to today’s activities.

Strength / do well: 

-Open minded to ideas, organised, able to take ownership of the project and lead the team whenever they are lacking, this implies that I am able to be both a leader and a teammate.

Weaknesses / areas to improve :

-Get distracted easily, time management, impatient. I should definitely improve on all of my weaknesses as it might be a problem in the future especially in the working world.

Q2. If you had more time and an unlimited budget, how would you design the monument differently? Include pictures of the group work, and your personal redesign.

-I would personally add texture on the monument, any logo that is related to the theme, the colour of the monument would be silvers as well
