Ellie was surprised when he used her full name, ignoring the way it made her feel important. He was saying a lot of things everyone else, including Ben, had been saying, so she knew it was the truth. “I’m just so scared. I feel like if I hope for it—or expect things to go well—then they will go horribly wrong. Does that make sense?”

Kieran kept patting the baby’s back, waiting for her to burp. “If I’m there with you, you won’t feel so scared. If they do get angry, they’ll get angry with me. I would rather that happen than have them angry at you alone.” Noreen finally burped and she seemed to settle down.

Ellie nodded. “All of my siblings know now, and they’re all fine.” She knew that probably should have made her feel better about all of this, but it hadn’t. Ellie took a deep breath in, watching as Noreen finished her bottle. “I’m still worried about it… What if they react worse than I expected? Or they hate me?”

“That’s good.” Kieran had hoped that this would mean that she would feel more comfortable telling her parents, but that didn’t seem to be the case. “Elizabeth, listen.” He took Noreen, placing her on his shoulder as he burped her. “Don’t worry about it. Your siblings were fine, so I’m sure your parents will be too. You should give them more credit.”

“Yes, then they had Janey and we both were pretty spoiled. And we did practically everything together.” Ellie had loved growing up with a sister so close in age to her, and so even and soft in temperament. “Kier, I don’t think you understand. What am I supposed to say to them?”

“Did you tell your sister about you being pregnant?” He asked, figuring that if they were that close, then Jane was sure to know. “You just tell them the truth. That’s all. It won’t be as hard or awful as you expect it to be. I could go back home with you and help you tell them.”

Ellie looked down at the baby, knowing she hadn’t thought of it like that. “I’m sorry. I should have realized that.” It made sense, especially with what she knew of his family. She smiled, nodding her head. “They definitely did. They said I was spoiled being the first girl.” When he mentioned them still loving her, she sighed. “You’re still on that, aren’t you?”

“It’s all right.” Kieran didn’t want her to feel bad about making that mistake. He had been loved as a child, and now, so that was all he needed to know. He chuckled when she explained how they had loved her. “That also doesn’t surprise me. But then they had your sister.” He sat down next to her, putting a hand on her knee. “You need to talk to them.”

“You can’t just not know. No one else told you stories about you as a baby?” Ellie asked, unable to believe that he didn’t know what he had been like. “They said I was a pretty fussy baby, but only sometimes. When I didn’t get my way. Which, I guess is not uncommon. But they also said I was really happy.”

“There were a lot of us, El. We weren’t all as individually focused on.” Kieran figured it was different for Ellie, especially since she had such a smaller family than he did. “I can see that, all of it. And I’m sure they loved you a lot despite your fussiness,” he replied teasingly. “I’m sure they love you now.”

Ellie attempted to feed Noreen again, and this time the baby latched onto the bottle. “You might be right…” That’s what she was worried about. How was she supposed to handle a baby if she couldn’t handle this one. “Were you bad as a baby?”

Kieran started cleaning up the mess from changing the diaper, shrugging. “I don’t really know. I guess I never asked my parents about what I was like as a baby.” He went and washed his hands, coming back. “What about you?”

The baby stopped fussing as much once the dry diaper was on, making Ellie calm down a little more. “Okay, let me try feeding her again.” She figured it would go better this time. “Don’t you think our baby will be better behaved?”

Kieran handed Noreen back to Ellie, hoping she would be able to feed her in peace now. “Who knows, honestly. Our baby could end up being even worse behaved. I don’t want you to get your hopes up.”

Ellie knew that he was making a good point. She just wondered why they were given such a difficult baby. “I guess so. I just don’t know how to take care of babies. You have younger cousins and siblings. My sister is only a year younger than me, so I never had to worry about her as a baby.”

“Well, it’s not like I was giving them baths or changing them or anything. I just played with them.” He checked Noreen’s diaper and she was, in fact, dirty. He cleaned her up and changed her diaper, putting on a fresh one. “See? Much better already.”

“Of course I did,” Ellie replied, knowing that she did not. “Maybe you should check it and I can go lie down.”

Kieran sighed, picking up the baby and setting her down on the bed. Noreen cried a little, fussy as he undid her onesie. “Don’t you think you should be taking advantage of this opportunity?”

“She isn’t wanting to take her bottle even though I swear she’s hungry.”

Kieran shrugged, looking down at the two of them. “Maybe she’s not hungry. Did you check her diaper?”

Ellie smiled softly as he kissed her, leaning into him. “What made you change your mind about all of this?” She asked, not wanting to just accept all of this without some sort of clarification. “When I left you seemed so distant. I’m glad you’re not anymore, but I just want to know.”

Kieran pulled away, knowing she needed an answer. He took a deep breath in before letting it out. “I guess it just gave me time to realize what i would be losing if I didn’t give you something to make you want to stay. You’re pretty much the only reason I’m here now. I don’t care about my cousins or what they’re doing, and I don’t think I realized that when you were here.”

Ellie chuckled softly when he told her, again, that he was glad she was back. “You didn’t miss me that much, did you?” She asked, leaning her head against his chest. “Or were you just nervous about asking me to live with you?” She figured that either way, it was sweet. She hadn’t had anyone act sweet like this to her in…she couldn’t even remember how long it had been. Too long.

“I did,” Kieran replied, moving down to kiss the skin under her earlobe. It had surprised him at first how much he had missed her, but he couldn’t help it. He figured that the saying “distance makes the heart grow fonder” was really true. He chuckled against her skin, nodding. “I guess I was also nervous about that.” He kissed her neck gently, slowly.

Ellie kissed him back, feeling the warm feelings from a few months ago come flooding back. After the way he had reacted to her being pregnant, those feelings had quieted. But now, they were back and she wanted to hold onto them. “I think it would be best if you moved in with me. I’ve already started a little nursery, anyway. I wouldn’t want to move everything over.”

“All right, then that’s what we will do.” Kieran was glad to be moving in with Ellie. He knew things might still be weird or rocky, but he was willing to work past those things. He hugged her, wrapping his arms around her tightly. “I’m glad you’re back,” he said softly, his face buried in her hair.

Ellie smiled softly, a warm feeling filling her when he put his hand over her belly. “But I want to know that this is more than just for the baby. If it’s not about me, then we shouldn’t do this.” If he was just wanting to be with her for the baby’s sake, then they could figure something else out. She didn’t want him feeling compelled to be with her.

Kieran wrapped his arms around her, pulling her close. “It’s about you, Ellie. I promise. First and foremost, I want you.” He pressed his forehead against hers, pecking her lips quickly. “So you’ll move in with me? Or I can move in with you. I know you’ve had your room for longer, so it would probably be easier that way.”

Ellie felt him pull away even though she wanted to keep kissing him. “Of course it’s a yes,” she replied with a laugh, her whole body buzzing with excitement and relief. “I’ve been wanting you to do something to show me that you’re here for me and that you want to be here. I thought you were going to disappear while I was away.” But instead, he had finally decided that he wanted to stay with her.

It broke his heart a little to hear her say that she thought he would disappear on her, but he couldn’t blame her. A couple of months ago, he might have tried to run off. But now, seeing her there, he wanted nothing more than to stay. “I care about you, El. I couldn’t just leave you alone.” His hand moved to her belly, feeling the slight bump. “You’re carrying our child.”

Ellie listened intently, not wanting to miss any of his words. And when he finally got to the part where he asked her for them to move in together, she couldn’t help smiling. It felt like a weight lifted off her chest. He could have said anything and she would have been relieved. She just wanted to know what direction he wanted to go in. “I want to be closer to you too,” she said before closing the gap between them, kissing his lips passionately.

Before he could say anything more, she was kissing him and he was kissing her back. He let go of her hand and wrapped his arms around her. He kept his lips pressed to hers for a few more moments, just to enjoy the feeling. They hadn’t kissed like this in weeks, and he had missed all of it. Finally, he pulled away, keeping her close. “So I’m taking that as a yes? You want to move in together?”

Ellie moved towards him, feeling that there was a shift in his attitude. This was the Kieran that she had met during the murder mystery game and the one she had ended up sleeping with in the first place. He didn’t feel like he was holding back from her anymore. “All right, what is it?” There could be a million important things he could ask her at the moment.

Kieran had been trying to come up with the perfect way to ask her, but it seemed like going the simple route was the best idea. “When I got your letter, I wasn’t sure how to go about taking our relationship to the next level. But with you gone, I kept thinking about you and missing you. So I figured that you could move in with me. Or I could move in with you. I want to be closer to you.”
