The more I read into Chie and Shuu’s relationship the more that I get the feeling that they are written to compliment each other. Not in a romantic sense, but more in a sense that Chie and Shuu are ’ doubles ‘, they are used to enhance each other’s characters.
They seem to be complete opposites, with the only thing they share with each other is the fact that they’re both passionate about one thing: Getting what they want. I’ve talked about this numerous times on this blog so I won’t go into it, but I will touch on one way they are different, the way they view life.
Shuu has once stated, while talking to Kaneki, that ‘“Isn’t it arrogant to put a price on whether life is ‘higher’ or ‘lower,’ Kaneki? We are just bags of meat. The weak bow down and the strong devour them. Rather, if you compared them to all living things, it’s humans who have shaved away the most lives. We are different than them.” ‘,Though he states that he doesn’t have a value system for human life, he still seems to view some people as lower than himself. Chie on the other hand, puts everyone on the same level, we are told that about her in the Light Novel Hibi ‘ No, for her, every living being existed on the same plane. It was a value system that surpassed ethics, that made her view them equally.' That is stunningly different from Shuu’s statement, but it doesn’t stop there, if we go further. When Shuu talks to Matsumae about Chie, she states that Shuu is an excellent student, and that he is an oddball ( not exactly her words, but it’s close ), and Chie is simply a mediocre student who isn’t much different from everyone else.
Another difference is how they handle stressful situation, with Shuu being very worried and getting hurt, like the church scene, compared to Chie being dangled off a building and still remaining calm.
Their friendship is also another way for them to be considered doubles, because they both ‘blackmail’ each other into being friends, Shuu with threatening her death, and Chie with threatening to expose him. It’s one of the few instances where someone stands up to Shuu by doing something that he would do to them. They mirror similar characteristics, but only if you read between the lines. For the most part, they complement each other, to make their personalities shine and to show the opposites make better friends than people who are exactly a like.
