SMILE Vinyl installation in the U of M restroom mirrors Spring 2014

How many seconds, minutes, hours do we spend looking in the mirror to enhance, improve, correct our perspective of beauty? Are we even aware of the time we spend looking at ourselves, inspecting our flaws, emphasizing our "good side", criticizing our image?

Let's lay back a bit. Have fun. Be silly.

Scenic Patriotic, Spring 2014 Acrylic ink, screenprint 4x6”

Resembling the United States flag, Patriotic tells the story of the Secret War, where the Hmong families residing in Laos aided the U.S CIA during the Vietnam War. When the U.S pulled out, the Hmong had to flee across the country, hiding in the thick jungles, dodge flying bullets, swim through the Mekong River, live in Thailand’s refugee camps, and fly to America to be known as the refugees from the Vietnam War.

Sorry for the lack of posts! I’ve been busy with this new amazing internship I’ve gotten over the summer! This is one of the outcomes from my internship: Harry Potter from colored construction paper made by me! :D the design & illustration is all crafted by me and, of course, the character rightfully belongs to J.K Rowling. :) This shall be hanged in the children’s library of the school I’m working at. The school is the best!!! :) can't wait to hang these up!

"My Mother's Journey" Fall 2012 Gao Hli Yang

This piece was done on the embroidery machine! Finally had a scanner big enough to scan this in! :) There's still a few thing I need to hand sew in (such as the wheels to the yellow car, yikes!), but it's about complete. I posted up a digital version of this special piece here.

"My Father's Journey" Linoleum Relief Print Spring 2013 Gao Hli Yang The Vietnam War consists of silent stories waiting to be heard. Throughout my life, I've only known my mother's side of her journey through the Vietnam War, how her father was drafted to the front lines in the army, her unexpected journeys village to village in the middle of the night with her mother to escape the random bombings as a young child, seeing crying orphaned infants in the arms of their deceased parents, crossing the unforgettable Mekong River for salvation, enclosed in suffocating Thailand refugee camps surrounded by barbed wires, and flying on a huge “silver bird” to a new world. My father's side of the story had stayed silent until this year, where he told his tragic and miraculous tale to me and my older sister while we were filling out applications on his background. It was an entire new revelation - it was a side I have only discovered by chance. As a young child of 7, my father was separated from his mother in the midst of running from the communists. Another Hmong family took him in under their care, but worked him like a servant: they had him do their laundry, babysit their young children, fed him only the tiny scraps of their already scarce dinner. At the tender age of 13, he enrolled himself to the army and fought against their communist opponents. When he reached 17, he miraculously reunited with his mother and family once again. Listening to my father's story made me realize how blessed our generation is to have our parents to survive the Vietnam War and bravely cross the rivers and oceans to a new world. In the midst of creating this piece, I realize that this artwork could easily help illustrate and universally tell the tale of many other Hmong refugees. Haha! :D I am so thankful to have such sweet and caring friends, it's such a treasure seeing them as cute little high school girlies into strong, brave, smart, and courageous women in college! I'll always treasure the memories we had in Chinese class! :)

"Two Worlds" Reductive Woodcut Spring 2013 Gao Hli Yang Moving from one land to another is not only a physical challenge, but a mental and psychological challenge as well... No matter where you are and what you've become, never forget your roots and where you've come from.

Late post, but this is my final reductive woodcut piece that was held up in the amazing Hmong Minnesota Leadership Conference [HMLC] of 2013 at the Mississippi Room at Coffman Memorial Union . Thank you HMSA for giving me an amazing opportunity to post up two of my works!

Hey everyone! Sorry for the extremely late post, but this is a few of the things I’ve been working on this semester! I’m taking an amazing printmaking class & my creative juices are overflowing! On the left is linoleum relief print on a scrap of newsprint (for testing out my print before printing it on nice BFK Rives paper). The right is a sketch of my next project on reductive woodcut on shina plywood! They both tell a story about my father’s journey through the Vietnam War, but they can universally tell any Hmong refugee’s tale. I can’t wait to show the final prints to you guys! Keep in touch!
