went to a new optometrist today wearing my squid facts ‘save our freaks’ shirt from @sarahmackattack that has a strawberry squid on it. and i wasn’t even thinking about it but the optometrist walked in and he was like ‘oh what does your shirt say’ so i showed him and he was like ‘oh that’s neat!’ and then i thought he might like to know about strawberry squid eyes since they have weird eyes and he is an optometrist and all. so i was like ‘yeah it’s actually a real kind of squid called a strawberry squid, their eyes are really cool because they have one big yellow-green one and one small blue one’ and he kind of gasped and went ‘oh my god that’s so interesting i wonder why they have that. do you know what their retina composition is like?’ and i watched as he minimized my chart on the computer and started looking up images of strawberry squid and then he googled ‘strawberry squid retina composition’ and he was like ‘sorry we’ll get to your eye exam in a moment i just really want to find out’ LMAO 10/10 optometrist experience will be returning

okay already i desperately need u.s. americans to practice the phrase, "not where i'm from, but maybe in other parts of the u.s."

because it's genuinely insane the things i've heard americans say 'america doesn't have' when it's just factually incorrect.

for some perspective: during my longest move i did by-car in the u.s., i drove ~3,000 miles. That's ~4,800 km. It took nearly 50 hours drive-times alone. Meaning, if I could have driven without stopping once, it would have taken nearly 50 hours. Of course I split that up over several days.

Driving that same distance here, If there's a ferry+road from Rabat (in Morocco) to Kyiv (Ukraine), I could take it and keep on going another several hours.

So you can understand how silly it is for someone from the u.s. to be asked to answer a question on behalf of the entirety of the u.s.—geographically, culturally, etc.

So now that we've said all that, I need you to know that I listened to a guy from Idaho tell an Irish person today, "yeah, we just don't really get snails much in America."

Tablet weaving with brocade

Is actually easier and more satisfying than I thought it would be? Having 2 different shuttles may sound daunting, and when I heard I'd have to create a second shed with my hand for the brocade I well near fainted. But...

You turn all the tablets forward at once and then you're done. No realizing you missed one or - worse - that your diagram had an error 💀 - ten rows after the fact.

You gotta make sure you're alternating the threading of the cards (S-Z-S-Z) so the whole thing doesn't start curling in a spiral when you're done. This one doesn't have different threading for the side cards either.

My 10-yr-old saw this and her shiny colours crow brain decided she wanted to do it, and I was surprised that she actually did - no mistakes on the hand-picked shed or anything. So if you're hesitating, I'd say go for it.

Some tips:

Pick your brocade thread with care. We group-ordered ours from a website in Holland, but basically what you need is a nice, tightly twisted 3-ply thread which you then double on your shuttle so the two threads lie flat next to each other and make the brocade look somewhat uniform. You can use shiny embroidery thread but it will look a bit messier.

When you've passed your brocade through the hand-picked shed, before you let it go, pass your shuttle (or a ruler) back through and press the threads down flat. They'll have a tendency to ride up and this helps.

Pick your colours so they contrast well with each other.

Be really careful when pulling your main weft through, it can dislodge the brocade.
