Insanity. That's what all of this is. Rhett can't give it any other word because there isn't one. This whole thing, carrying bodies across land to burn because they'd been people trying to kill them is something straight out of some horror novel or movie. This wasn't supposed to happen in real life. This wasn't a cop show where some freak could get ideas on how to murder people. This was an illness that was spreading like proverbial wildfire.

The irony isn't lost on the cowboy as he watches the flames he'd struck to start grow more and more. Watch as each body began to be engulfed in red hot flames. He's grateful he always kept a handkerchief in his pocket because he tied it around his face. It does little to block the smell of burning flesh but at least he's not inhaling some of that in.

Rhett moved closer to Laurel after he couldn't handle watching it any longer. Friends being burned away to ash like this didn't sit well in his gut but it had to be done. "We'll douse it as soon as we're done here." he said, knowing their best option after all of this was to make it seem like they didn't fucking exist out here. Stay confined. Only go out for the horses.

He resigned himself then that he was going to have to go home at some point and deal with the cows. Maybe he could bring a few here. Or do what needed to be done so they could have some meat on his land so this one stayed clear. Laurel was right. They were going to have to start making a dent on anything that wasn't canned. It all looked so bleak and it's not even been 24 hours.

Rhett's head snapped towards the sound of her voice calling out to him and her mother. Her form closing in and he went to meet her half way. "Hey, whoa. Slow down, sweetheart what's wrong?" He pulled the cloth away from his face. "Did they say something on the radio?" It's all his mind goes to at first. Not thinking that burning these bodies was a problem. The smell was terrible sure, but they couldn't risk the soil when power was already slowly dying.

He calls her angel? Good grief she couldn't be that special. Iris remained all smiles though, happy to have a moment alone with this man that she's tried to pursue for some time now. In her eyes Patrick was everything she needed to finish out her image in the high society crowd she frequents. His chosen career made him invaluable in that circle. Not to mention their combined wealth would be stellar.

But there is the tiniest crack in her own polished veneer as he steps forward to slightly tower her even in her high heels. Expressing his displeasure in the way she addressed that woman that she refuses to acknowledge as the one he's chosen to spend his life with. No matter what that would never make sense to the blonde."I see." She finally says, straightening slightly but she doesn't back down. Not just yet. Despite what he may think she isn't one to cause a scene. She wants any press on her to spotless.

"I fear you have made a very grave error, Patrick dear." An idle threat or simple the words of a scorn woman she would let him decide. Her hand lifted, gently caressing her cheek before she gave it fell away. There is the hint of something in her ice blue eyes. Anger maybe? More determination? "Enjoy your evening with her then. But do not come crawling to me in a years time when you do finally get bored of her." Since for the love of God Emma had to be fucking boring. Easily she steps around him, hitting into his shoulder as she did for one last hint of how much of a mistake he truly made before Iris slipped back into the crowd of people.

You can judge a lot about a man by the way he shook your hand and Theo stuck by that logic. Owen met him halfway, firm just as he expected and maybe that's part of the reason he's voiced his approval of the councilman. Silly reason but Theo has been in the politics scene long enough to know when he's in front of a winner. He chuckled a little at the jab, taking it in stride because Owen had a point. He already had a drink in his hand that was almost gone.

"That Monroe kid?" Theo scoffed a bit. "Owen you need to drop him and get someone new. His behavior won't fly in office." He's one to talk. Theo's behavior isn't the greatest in office but he knows how much this means to Owen to keep a clean image. "l'll do some research for you, get you someone better alright? Harvard grad if that's what you really want."

Theo's brows raised. "No, no I didn't see that but I'm sure it's alright. Don't let it bother you." Clapping him on the shoulder same as Owen had. "Enjoy your night. As for what's cause all the missing guests?" He blew out some air. "Fuck, I hope it's not Covid part two. That was a fucking nightmare to deal with and I wasn't fresh in office. Wouldn't want that for you."

"You look like you could use this." Emma said softly, holding the champagne flute out to the woman with a smile. It was hard to say no. "It's my first time at something this big, nothing like a little liquid courage to get you through it." That right there is what put her on a better pedestal than Iris Vaughn. Emma is out here trying to engage in small talk with a stranger and maybe make a friend. "You're press?" She asked, taking a small sip from the glass in her hand once she noted the press badge attached to her. She'd grab another drink for Patrick later so they could toast to this night.

"Thank you ma'am." If he was wearing his signature black cowboy hat he would have tipped it to her for that compliment. In these moments its the nicest thing anyone could say to him. Glad Laurel also understand where he's coming from with her daughter. He can let it die for right now. Besides Jade didn't see him that way. He may be what Laurel thought was her type, older as she put it but that meant nothing really. A lot of people were older than her. He rolled his shoulders, tableing that discussion fully and focusing at last back on the bodies on the porch.

Rhett caught the gloves in one hand, easily sliding hands into each as Laurel weighed the options he threw out there. It was the obvious. If these bodies were corrupted beyond whatever sickness this was they were fucked if they put them in ground. They would have to burn them. In some ways, Rhett thought it a better send off for all of them to be cremated for lack of a kinder word. A breeze blew threw them both and made those sheets on Maisie and Jimmy dance but they remained covered.

This is where his reputation of a man of few words took over. They easily placed Maisie, Jimmy, and then Rhett placed Ranger in the wheelbarrow and they started a hike out past her back forty. He wondered if Jade had woken up yet, if she was still safely sleeping or if she was out with the horses by now. He didn't see movement at the house when he looked but that didn't mean anything. Half the windows were boarded over.

Digging holes would have been better than scrounging around for wood to start an inferno to handle this. Not only had they needed to gather up Jimmy, Maisie and Ranger. But then it Mike, Dave, Mr. Miller and Carlos. Daylight broke by the time they had gathered everyone. The sun helped chase the chill in the air away, but it could chase the reality of what he and Laurel were looking at. Six lives and an animal gone in the span of a handful of hours yesterday. Not to mention Jesse and his mother at his place. Eight people gone to something the world had no clue what to do with. Or what it was.

Rhett wants to speak, to say something that will make this not feel so fucking heavy on both of them but nothing comes. He can't make this better. What they both had to do will sit on their respective chests for a long time, if not forever. And Rhett will do what it takes to make sure Jade doesn't have to have any of this weight on her.

"Good to hear." Jade will be happy to hear the horses are alright. He knew that was going to eat at her. Rhett saw it immediately that Laurel was going to have something to say over it. And like the man his mother raised him to be he stood there and listened and took it. He's not mad, he understands where Laurel is coming from. But it also stings a bit to really know the depth of who Frank was to Jade. Her Captain? Jesus, and he thought he would be bad for her but being involved with a superior in a police department could have some serious consequences for her if anyone had found out. Only knows that from watching one too many tv shows with his mom. That thought just comes with another pang to his chest. He's never going to be alright again, he knows it for a fact.

"Laurel," he tried at one point but stopped himself and let her finish. Just a mother protecting her daughter is all this was. Rhett shoved hands into his pockets. "Laurel, that girl of yours means the world to me." He admitted it plainly, and much quicker than he ever thought he would to her of all people. "I won't apologize for it, but I'm certainly not going to take advantage of her when she's grieving." He would never. Right now he's truly just trying to give her somewhere to land so she can grieve properly. "I just wanted her to sleep is all. Thought I could have stayed up but yesterday put us all through the wringer."

He sighed then too, hand leaving his pocket to rub at the back of his neck. This is all so delicate. He would never want to disrespect Laurel either but Rhett won't apologize for his feelings. He couldn't help but fall in love with Jade. But here he is years in and still hasn't said a word. Had to mean something right? He pushed all of that to the side, deciding to focus on the biggest task of the day.

"Do you think maybe we should burn them out there instead? We don't know what this thing is. What if it fucks up the soil? If this is what the radio is making it seem--" End times. Power could go any minute. Grocery stores would cease. They'd have to grow food. "It came to me last night when I was out here. Too fucking quiet for my liking even then." Commenting on it like she had when she first walked over, he scanned the ranch over again. Grateful that for now there was no one crawling out of the trees. How long would that last? What happened when they ran out of ammo? Too many what if's.

Truth be told Rhett was no long for the world after Jade had fallen asleep. Her steady breathing helped lull him down as well, combined with the exhaustion of the day he was down for the count pretty quick. But it was all restless in the end. waking here and there, making sure she was still sleeping Rhett gave up close to dawn. Slowly and carefully he broke away from Jade there on the couch.

Gently he eased her to lay on the cushions instead of against his side, draping a blanket over her form despite the warmth from the fire place. For while he just watched her again, finding one tiny shred of peace knowing she had been able to sleep this long. It'll do her good to get through the day ahead. Brushing hair out of her face Rhett sighed before he stood. The depth of his feelings for her is only growing with the turbulence of life outside. He can't let anything happen to her. Or her mother.

Sig lifted his head once Rhett began moving around, stretching slightly against the old rug his stood on all fours, looking a little less injured after a night of rest. Good, it would be good to have him outside if things went wrong again. He moved for the door. Being quiet as ever because he wanted Jade to sleep as long as she possible before he woke her at first light like he promised he would. Outside the world was still quiet. No insect or bird sounds. Maybe a snort from one of the horses in the barn but nothing else. Bodies still laid on the porch. None had miraculously come back to life, thank fuck. Questions are still swirling in his mind on what to do with them. If burying was the best option or should they just... burn them. Prevent whatever illness this is from seeping into the ground.

"Eerie isn't it, boy?" He murmured to Sig who stood right at his side on high alert. Looking in all directions for any sort of threat. Rhett reached behind him, making sure his pistol was still on his when he saw movement. Laurel was already out here. Oh well that was going to be good. Coming downstairs to see him and Jade huddled up on the couch like that was probably a sight for her. "Fuck," Running a hand through his hair he steeled himself for whatever conversation was to be had about it. Whether it was just some ribbing or more of a 'stay away from my daughter, cowboy' kind of deal. "Get any sleep?" He asked after stepping off the porch and heading over to her.

Yeah he wants to stay up. Call it chivalry that he wants the women to sleep first. "Not all night." He corrected her, cause god damn he can feel the heaviness in his bones from how tired he his. All the adrenaline wearing off, all the crying, all the grief has taken it's toll. "I did a twenty minute horse back ride here. Your mom slaved away getting a party together and you drove in all of this, hours." He shifted, enjoying her hand along his chest far too much for what had transpired today. "You both need it a little more than I do right now is all. I'll sleep. Just wanna make sure you do first." And it was the truth. How good that sleep would be or how long remained to be seen but with how tired he is he hopes it happens.

Rhett's motion along her arm still at Jade's confession, same way he felt like his heart skipped a beat. To think, if a person had bitten her on the road here, she would have ended it all. Can he blame her after seeing what they become? No, no he really can't but the thought of it still makes his stomach clench. A world with out her in it wasn't right. He found himself taking one last sip of his drink before he eased forward only enough to put the glass down on the coffee table before he's snug back in place with her. "I won't, sweetheart. Secrets safe with me. Cross my heart." His voice is low, raspy and that's partially from all the emotion spilt early but it's also from this talk.

If this party hadn't been a thing, if Jade hadn't truly been coming home for good and he'd gone out only to come home to his mother being dead? He would have ended it too. He would have assumed Jade lost to the chaos of the city and written his life off then and there. Nothing left to live for but it's not the case. She's right here against him and he's not letting her go for nothing. he'll protect her with his life. That is the only thing he's sure of anymore. "Sleep. I'll wake you when I can't keep my eyes open any more."

Rhett waited, his fingers resuming that calming pass over her arm before it slips up to run fingers through the ends of her hair. Anything to create that soothing call to lull her to sleep. He's unsure of when it finally happened, half concentrated on keep an ear out for any strange sounds outside. But once he feels the steady breathing against him he can fully relax. Knowing Jade is at least asleep. He pressed his lips to her head again. A little harder this time before he whispered. "I love you sweetheart." Barely above a whisper, careful not to shatter the quiet and wake her up too soon.
