Another one of my favourite places to look for a bargain is gumtree! You can normally find people just wanting to get rid of there furniture and sometimes for free. That’s right… FREE.

This project was actually a very enjoyable one and is my first recovering one too!

Here’s how it went down: 1) wash your furniture with a damp cloth/sugar soap and dry with a kitchen towel

2) I took original Annie Sloan paint and put 1-2 coats on first, put it on thickly but mop up your dribble marks with your brush as you go.

3) Once that had dried, I applied one coat of Annie Sloan Greek blue, again, make sure you mop up your dribble marks as you go. You may need to use a smaller brush on this type of chair or similar as it is quite hard to paint the inside of the pillars.

4) Once the paint has dried, use Annie Sloan soft wax and apply to every nook and cranny of the chair, use a wax brush and use an up and down motion first then go over it in a circular motion. Make sure you have no lumps. Then take a kitchen towel and just wipe over to pick up any excess wax.

5) Time to start distressing! Take a fine grit sand paper and start by rubbing lightly on the parts you would like to distress. Too much distressing can ruin your piece so be careful. To get the two colour effect, rub lightly until you can see the white underneath the blue, stop for a moment and brush the dust off so you can see. If you decide you want a little bit of wood to show through too, then keep rubbing! You can see on the pictures that on some parts I’ve just let the white show through and others I’ve gone the whole way down. Then brush off the dust and wax again to seal the paint.

The recovering of the chairs was interesting! Simply take the original cover off the cushion, make sure the foam underneath is still in good nick and not dirty, if it is, you may need to replace it. Then put the cushion upside down so you see the wooden back, simply wrap your fabric round it like a present, make sure you put more fabric on than you need as you can always cut it off. Make sure your corners are held TIGHT! Then, I found best to use an electric staple gun to secure my fabric on. I picked it up for £20 from a DIY store. It will go through the wood but not through any clips that may already be in place holding the wooden back to the cushion so be strategic. Also, watch your fingers! And that’s about it! Try it and have fun, I really enjoyed this one and they are also in an apartment being used.

This was probably my simplest up cycle but the most satisfying. The simplest of ideas make the biggest impact. As you can see this lamp had a lovely gold colour already (I also got it free, see prev blog for my spending rule!), all I did was paint it graphite black, wax, then distress slightly with some fine grit sandpaper to bring out the gold! Then put a beautiful vintage bulb on the top! The thing I learnt here was that chalk paint will stick to metal but you may need about 3 coats to get the effect you want. This project was acquired by someone on the same day as well! Just had to let it all dry before transporting!

CAR BOOTS! Car boots are amazing for picking up bargains. I have a rule where I pay no more that £10 for a piece of furniture. Otherwise, you will find the cost of the paint, wax, glue, paper or whatever it is you need, will mount up. I paid £2.50 each for the stools/small tables. These little things are quite versatile and are actually currently being used as 2x bed side tables.

Decoupage can be quite tricky and its sticky! What I did was put the stools upside down on to the paper and drew around the top so I knew I had an exact fit. Then carefully cut it out. Slap mod podge decoupage glue straight on the wood, you want a moderate amount but not to much. If you find you are getting air bubbles and creases, which you probably will, take a ball of cling film and start pushing the creases/bubbles out, the sooner you can do this the better so have it on standby. For the sides, i wanted a ripped map effect so I used all the left overs and tore them up and stuck them around the sides like a collage. Again glue straight on the wood then stick your paper on. Then add a layer of glue to the top of the paper to provide a varnish.

If you find you have bits that are too long, don’t worry, while its wet with glue, take a nail file and just very gently file across the bit you want to cut off. Sorted!
