Sydney Jazz Sunday the 19th August
I had a great lunch @ Otto on the wharf on Sunday.
Creamy scallops, melting gnocchi at a standard you could expect. It was a shame that the chef had not checked the weather and adjusted a little less lamb and a little more seafood (well any seafood in a main would have been great).
I was told never to assume however the fact that there is no Jazz @ any of the restaurants on the Woolloomooloo wharf must be a Clover Moor / Council nutty idea. And hear is Clover Moor saying she is good for Live Music; at least the restaurants @ the wharf could afford to pay the professionals as professionals and have a calibre of music Sydney should be proud of. I digress!
The second glass of wine and the sun filled the deck and the boat leaving to Balmain was an afterthought.
We were planning to head to Balmain for our Sunday fix @ the unity hall one of Sydney’s institutions.
Failing this we headed to the East Sydney Hotel. You can see the locals huddled around their golden ale, in the sun having a chuckle. Instant warmth of an honest pub in Sydney City fills you as you enter the bar. The warmth vanished and the bitter chill of extortion hit with an $8 becks lager. No wonder the locals all drink Tooheys.
Now it was five past five (and the band was to start @ five) when the horse drawn cart caring the new generation of their Amish community delivered our young musicians to us. At 5.25 Geoff Bull (a great New Orleans style trumpeter) mentioned that the band would be starting late as a member was delayed. I was confused as to why one needed seven pieces (rather than 6) to begin playing half an hour late and if they were starting @ 5 why they were not set up @ 4. This is not the calaber of gig you would receive @ 505, DOME bar or Blue Beat.
The music began, and as I would expect Geoff Bull relay hit the notes, the piano was a little off tune however was played brilliantly and was accompanied by the warmth of sax that elevated me to another place.
I would return to hear Geoff play, most likely with a few mates rather than the new girlfriend as the selection of beverage offered by the east Sydney hotel leaves a lot to be desired. Or just pop over to Newtown where he plays another gig.
Since 50% of pubes and bars in Sydney have no Poker machines it hardly makes since screaming about how good it is. It’s hard to say but this venue makes the Sunday Gig @ the white hours look like a well ran venue.
PS A thanks to my friends and followers who joined me for FREE @ DOME Bar Surry Hills last week. It was great to see my child hood legend Bernie McGann out in Surry Hills.
