The strongest man I've ever known. Built like a mountain, and just as immovable. Unfailingly dependable. Stubborn like an ass. Wicked sense of humor. Always joking. Always curious. Very handy. The greatest mind, even if he did not get to be a scholar. Happy tinkering away with electronics. On top of latest tech for a very long time, maybe until the last 5 years or so. He'd always complain that his home accounting software had a backup function that didn't work, I'd roll my eyes but I swear I'd always happilly help him with this again for the thousandth time, with anything with his computer or tablet or phone. I'd like to think I was his favourite granddaughter. I thought so, and I wore it like a proudest little secret.
The greatest grandpa I could've ever wished for.
He used to take me to kindergarten. Those years are my favourite of my whole childhood. It was a time when he was retired but grandma wasn't yet, and we used to do the most fun things when he babysat me. We took apart wild poppy flower buds and played that they were skirts of little fairies. We would sled down a small nearby hill. He'd take me to see his old coworkers and they would tell me to wash my eyes so they're not as dark. When I grew up we'd talk about technology and computers.
We were not a hugging family, but as he got old, oh god, he gave the most fantastic bear hugs.
Of course I did not see him enough lately. Of course I did not hug him this Tuesday, when I clumsily wished him happy 90th birthday and told him to take his time getting better so that we can celebrate with him.
He was the greatest man I knew. I'm forever grateful for him, but by god, he should've been with us at least for five more years.
