This beautiful gown was first seen on Maggie Smith as Portia in the 1972 adaptation of William Shakespeare’s The Merchant of Venice for BBC’s Play of the Month. The costume was used again in the long running television series Doctor Who, where it was worn by Elisabeth Sladen as Sarah Jane Smith in the 14th season episode The Masque of Mandragora in 1976.
