What are your thoughts on the UNIT polycule dating situation?
I'm generally not into polycules. Of all the combinations with UNIT, I really only ship Yates/Benton from it. Though I've dabbled in some others in my time.
I can't see Three with anyone except Liz or Alistair.
The most I've done for Three/Alistair was an "aliens made them do it" and a couple fanarts. Liz/Alistair/Three is a good combination I've had fun writing for once, because they really do have great chemistry (which their Big Finish actors also have together.)
I can't do Alistair with Yates or Benton, because he wouldn't go for someone directly under his command like that. Jo is also directly under his command, and she's definitely too young for him. The Doctor and Liz are civilian contractors, so that's more "acceptable." But even then I feel Alistair's too... private or repressed to actually do anything, even if he has feelings. There's also the real-world context I have with this in relation to him being with men, with all the 1970's rules and laws that would affect him especially.
Jo and Yates as friends, who might've had a crush early on. Jo and Benton as friends.
Yates/Benton is my only "true" ship. Yates looks at Benton in that way more than anyone else. Same with Benton for Yates. He really shows zero interest in anyone else. They have a sort of quiet chemistry.
Yates and Sarah also as friends, because that's really what he needed at the time they met. Though I have them as friends-with-benefits (with Benton's approval) for a while after she gets back from her tardis travels. They have too much chemistry for me not to do something with.
The tie-in novels seem to want Sarah/Alistair +Three to be a UST thing, which is... interesting, but I'm not on that train 🤨
And the Master is the long-past Doctor's ex with lingering feelings who doesn't factor into any arrangement at all, except in his own head 😆
(If you want to add Four, he only has eyes for Sarah, and Four/Sarah is my other main Doctor Who ship. Though I did write a Four/Sarah/Three fic 🤭. Harry and Sarah as friends. Harry and Four as friends. The Four and Yates audio series certainly had some crushing and chemistry, which is interesting to think about in a good way.)
