This week I still working on The Picture of Dorian Gray. Due to my tight  schedule, I only read 40 pages this week. To be honest, I started to lose interest in this book. Ton of background information made me sick. But the story remind me the old time when my mother prohibit me to dye my hair. She always says that beauty will not last long and I should focus on my internal training instead. I was confused back then because I do not know how to show off things that inside of me.

What is a question I think the author is using the book to ask?

The Picture of Dorian Gray is a masterpiece for someone who able to desirable a character for more than 40 pages. Based on the story, i think author is trying to ask if it is possible that beauty never fades. From what i have read so far, author barely mentions Dorian has a gorgeous face in his generation. author is very likely say no matter how beautiful you are as a teen, beauty never last forever.

I perfectly accomplished my weekly reading goal in previous two weeks which is read 100 page. I feel the story well organized but the conversation between characters is a chaos, hard to follow. I do not feel any pressure to accomplish my read goal because it is entertaining. I do not need to plan my time to squeeze my reading hours. I read it whenever when I have time during breaks.

Based on my reading so far the only thing mentioned is the beauty of Dorian Grey. Lord Henry finally meets Dorian Grey with a deep conversation. Here is one of the famous quotation from Lord Henry: The only way to get rid of a temptation is to yield to it. Resist it, and your soul grows sick with longing for the things it has forbidden to itself, with desire for what its monstrous laws have made monstrous and unlawful” To be honest, I do not fully understand the meaning of this sentence. And it is extremely hard for someone to yield his or her temper when he or she is on rage.  Lord Henry also mentioned God will take back the unfairness that he assigned to individuals. For example, the only enemy of beauty is time. More gorgeous you are at age of twenty, the faster it fade by the times goes. 

My question is why Dorian Grey is so rich? Does he has a decent job or just a professional model? Why author uses nearly fifty pages to describe on Dorian’s appearance?

weekly reading goal

i am starting a new book this week called the picture of domain gray. in class i read 20 pages, after tedious math calculating, i assume my reading goal for this week is to read 80 pages. It would be good for me to accomplish my goal if i could read half an hour each day before bed time. my term goal is to read two more books.

I am in progress of reading a book called " 0 cost society." From the first two chapters, author is trying to explain the idea of future market will rely on Internet. As a result, only online store and industry will be exist. Customers could get everything they need by clicking the mouse. Since online store does not require as many staff as a real store does and the rental price is relevantly  low, online store is going to be a great choice for entrepreneur. 

I am thinking if 0 cost society really comes, then ton of people will become unemployed.  Even in the contemporary world, more and more operation of industry has been transferred into mechanization and automation to replace human labor. In the future, when one person is enough to manage the entire business, people who do not have advanced industry will be a loser. 

However, if the every thing's quantity is ensured, then the 0 cost society would more likely to be a communist system. Everything is sufficient, then money is no longer valued to the society. People could just exchange the things they had. 

However, there is one big leak in communist country. When work hard or do nothing has the same payback, people will lack passion to work. If everything is already free, then why people have to strive hard to investigate something new?

Do you want to be a successful man?

Hello my following readers. It's book talk time. Continued from last week, I read two chapters of 'Outliers' written by Malcolm Gladwell in my precious spare time. In fact I read more than two Chapter, but I haven't finished the third one, So lets talk about the content in those chapters. Author tells me that family background has a significant impact on people's future life. A middle class family encourage their child talk to people, and make interaction to people. For example, they would interrupt an adult when they feel something is wrong, or ask adults for assistance. To the contrast, child born in a poor family seems more submissive. They tend not to cause any problems and they hardly complain about the service they get. When their leader made a wicked decision, they do not resist but suffer the misfortune. 

There is one thing worthy everybody to consider about, is making effort will eventually pay you a successful career? Or luck is the primary factor? But how do you define luck? Born in a rich family? Get a chance to work in a great company? Find gold mine in your backyard? 

I do not know, you tell me.

By the way, for me, be able to study at CCS is my luck.

outliers

Outliers by Malcolm Gladwell is a great book that helps me understand successful people. I accomplished my weekly reading goal every week and got interested in this book. Unlike other books, Outliers uses celebrity as example to explain why they have potential to be successful. In this way, I felt empathy with the stories. therefore, I read 50 pages for night and read for two nights. I feel so smart after reading this book. 

I wonder if i could be successful in the future.

SSR notes

Animal farm by George Orwell is an interesting book. I read 75 pages last week. The book portrays a special communist society ruled by Animals. Nothings is really astonishing but it gives reader a difficult time to imagine those animals manage their life by themselves. In human's consciousness, pig's intelligent ought ranked in the bottom of the list. But from the book, pig is the most intelligent animals among that society. And pig is the one who draft constitutions . Compare to my pervious book "Dr.Bird' advice for sad poets", Animal Farm is a pure fiction novel. Some animals could do things like human. 

Honestly, I am tired of this book already. Because at this point, pig is trying to rule the farm just like human use to be. And I could see the future of this farm is not stable. One day animals will miss the old time when human manage the farm. 

This book fits to people who are terrible readers. Because there is no hard vocabularies, no deep meanings, easy to read and comprehend. Thus, I recommend this book to freshman students. 

My English teacher Mr.Kempe told me that a good reader must ask insightful questions. So here are the questions. Is this a real story? Why such a superficial book could be so popular? Why animals speak English if they hate Jones so much? Why not learn to speak Chinese?

book talk

Hello everyone, I would like to give a hint to my readers, your reading process ought to be painful, because I have zero passion of doing this book talk. But since my favorite English teacher asked me to such a wonderful assignment, here is some questions I made when I read the book " Dr. bird's Advice for sad Poets" by Evan Roskos. 

The story is about an idiot named James trying to be valuable in the school and home and developed his courage through all the incidents. James was a timid, stupid, and ugly boy in the first chapter. However, his life entirely changed after he recused a bird from a short bus. Of course he got hurt by doing that. His arm was broken for several months, and the bird somehow could communicate with the boy. The bird gave the boy advices on how to deal with people around him. Times goes by, James became a men with confidence, and he find a girl made him heartbeats go so fast. Eventually, he no longer needs to hug a tree when he felt alone.

So here is the question, why birds could communicate with human? Is is real? What good advice could a bird give to human? How dumb is James that he need listen to a bird?
