Who was more massacred by canon (Character assassination/flanderization, bad adaptation, bigoted treatment by writers etc.)?
Lourdes Delgado
Bon Smith
Gregory "Mouse" Gerwitz

ok. so. bon propaganda
like the person who submitted bon points out, bon had a pretty interesting backstory that included him living in poverty (which is also implied by the looks of his home) and stealing from stores to get some food. This was until one of his now bandmates stopped him and recruited him to form a band.
An unknown amount of time passes after this event, and we see him as a member (more specifically, the main guitarist) of said band participating in a battle of the bands event where the band he is in appears to be the rival band of the main character's.
He is shown to be very self-assured, confident and quite cocky, as he takes a look at the opposing team and laughs, affirming that “[they] are going to destroy them”. However, he is soon blown away by the equally impressive skills of their rival band's guitarist after being seemingly challenged to a guitar duel by him.
This turns into Bon being so amazed by his opponent's skills that he slowly develops a crush on him (that eventually becomes pretty much the centre of attention of the show and is worsened by the 2nd season)
Bon, however, is very put off by this, not understanding what is happening to him and being unsure of what his true feelings are, which causes him to be angry at this rival.
But he slowly begins to accept that he doesn't hate him, and even tries to step in when he sees this guy being beat up by bullies, claiming that “he can't watch another guitar (player) get hurt” but eventually ends up not doing so, which leads to said guy getting injured.
This leads to him feeling guilty and mad at himself for not helping this guy out when he had the chance to do so, which leads to Bon actually stepping up the next time he sees him being attacked and promising to always help him out, even if it means putting himself at risk of becoming another target for those bullies. This also leads to some character development by the other guy's part, seeing Bon step up to protect him made him realize he wasn't going to stand by it anymore and tells the bullies to leave, feeling proud of himself afterwards.
Fights now seem to become a common occurrence for the two of them, getting in fights which end up getting the attention of bon's father. I'm not really gonna talk about him since someone else already made an analysis about him, you should check it out !
Bon's father is ecstatic to find out his son got into a fight and shows relief in the fact he did, stating that he was afraid he was becoming too “effeminate” and mocking Bon's choice of clothing while he's at it, saying that he looks like a woman with all those accessories he wears.
After a while, Bon and the guy he's crushing on get into a fight; Bon's biggest fear is “to disappoint”, so when his bandmates walk in on the two of them having a conversation, they ask what a member of the rival team is doing on their band's studio, which makes Bon start panicking.
In a moment of panic, he starts yelling and telling off this guy, pushing him and asking him to leave him alone, playing the situation to his favour by making it look as if the guy had come to bother him during practice so that his bandmates don't suspect that they've been hanging out. He then leaves the band's room miserably, leaving Bon contemplating what he had just done.
Bon then has a segment dedicated to him figuring out he's in love with that guy and regretting what he did to him, but soon after that, his father introduces him to Toddy, his new fiancée of a likely arranged marriage. (She was also really fucked over as a character IMO but this isn't about her)
Going back to his crush, Bon and him are put in a situation where they are practically forced to spend time together, and to his surprise, the other guy still treats him nicely even after what he did to him. This leads to Bon snapping and eventually working up the courage to apologize to the guy he hurt so badly and even begging for forgiveness, not understanding how he could be so kind to him after he broke their promise and even almost attempting to confess in the heat of the moment before being cut off by him.
They have a heartfelt talk in which they patch things up, Bon's crush saying that he forgives him and that there's no need to explain anything, explaining how he's just like him; he may not always understand him (likely including what he does and why he does it, like when they fought in the studio) but that people don't understand him either, and that he feels like he's the only person he doesn't feel weird around.
After the talk there is a small friendzone joke with Bon being heartbroken while Total Eclipse Of The Heart by Bonnie Tyler plays in the background before getting dragged away by one of his bandmates, never to be seen again until the next season.
He Gets Fucked Over
During season 2, Bon's crush is used merely for comedic effect, and his personality is visibly altered into an exaggeration of the nervous and awkward personality that he had whenever he was around the guy he had a crush on. We don't see anything more about his backstory and the rest of the show makes him act always silly.
It's quite dumb, since most characters had their backstories thoroughly explored and had crucial moments of character development during this season, except for the character who already had probably the most interesting build up for a backstory.
I feel like he had a lot of potential for a deeper exploration of his backstory, since I feel like we had only seen pretty much the tip of the iceberg about his life. Not to mention the repeated gag of him trying to confess and getting interrupted or being misunderstood got a bit old quickly for me.
