Sound Operator for This Is Portsmouth | Friday 14th May 2021
On our most recent broadcast of This Is Portsmouth, my team was in charge of the gallery. Naturally, I put myself forward for the role of sound operator.
This time, this kit I used was very different in comparison to the small booth located in the upstairs gallery. As complicated as it looked at first, I easily got the hang of how to use the mixer.
Cage Warriors: Trilogy 3
120, 121, 122
This was when I worked on the last show of the trilogy of Cage Warriors last month. I was able to contribute more to the creation of some aspects of the show during the filming of the interviews and also the live shows, which felt very rewarding after the the broadcast on the final night.

Cage Warriors, Dec 2020
Cage Warriors
2020/2021
At the end of last year all of third year Television and Broadcasting were given the opportunity to work on a television show. Wanting to gain more experience within in the industry I jumped at the chance.
I worked alongside some of the most talented producers, presenters, camera operators and directors. As this was during COVID-19, all the team along with many cage fighters were put in a bubble so we were able to easily interact with each other.
My roles included being responsible for the security of the SD cards for the editors, worked as a communicator between director, camera operator and editors during the filming of the interviews prior to the live show. As well as this when we went live at York Hall, I was responsible for the storage and duplication of video footage of all fights.
I will be participating in the upcoming shows again from 16th-20th March 2021, performing similar tasks as to last year.
PLAYOFF/BACK TO SCHOOL TEAM
Television Broadcasting
This is Portsmouth
One of our most recent modules was a university television show through our own channel, CCI. Our whole year group collectively worked on the show and each separate group was given a role or task to complete for the next show.
I had initially chosen the sound operating role for this module, but my group was given the task of working in the studio in the Eldon Hub. At first I was not able to fulfil my chosen role, but as another member from a different group was not able to do their role, I was given the opportunity to work as the sound operator for our first run through show. Due to there still having to take precautions because of COVID-19, we kept a 2m distance, sanitised and isolated all kit to avoid any contamination.
Unfortunately again due to COVID-19, we were unable to complete our show for the first semester, but our group finished with a 1st at the end of the year.
We are still carrying on this module, but it is all done remotely by communicating with other team members through Zoom and other social media platforms.
External Live Brief
Boathouse No. 4
With this module, we were paired with another course, Film Production. We were tasked with creating content for a client outside of the university.
My group chose to focus on Portsmouth’s Historical Dockyard, where we were asked to create content for their social media as well as an informative video that they could use on YouTube and on their website. When deciding on our roles, I chose to try sound operator again. I thought this best because it would give me more experience working with sound in a different and maybe even difficult environment.
Unfortunately due to COVID-19 again, we were not able to finish filming and editing. All groups had to hand in a portfolio of our planned work, including shot lists and story boards, location recce and lists of audio we would be using. Fortunately with working with such a dedicated group we finished off the module with a 1st.
Television Format Live
Back to School
Going into our second semester, we were given another groups television format to alter and make our own.
We were given a school based quiz show, somewhat similar to “Are you smarter than a 10 year old?”. This time instead of filming in the White Swan studios, we worked with studio space at the front of my university building, named the Eldon Hub. Carrying on from the previous semester, I continued my role as sound operator, although this time things were slightly different.
As part of the production team, we were situated further away from the studio and used talkback devices to speak to the team downstairs in the hub. Using a variety of different and new devices I was able to learn new skills as well as improving previously learnt ones.
As we were not able to go live and be broadcasted on the Big Screen in Guildhall due to COVID-19, our grade was not as high as we hoped but we still accomplished another 2:1.
Television Pilot
Play Off
In second year our task was to create a television pilot which another group would take over in the second semester to alter it.
We decided on going with a ‘League of their Own’ style to our show, making it a sports panel and game show featuring quiz and interactive rounds. I again, put myself forward for the role of sound operator; I felt I had gained a lot of experience from first year and other members had also agreed.
With a few things that we could have improved on, we were awarded with a 2:1 in that module.
INTRODUCTION TO TELEVISION SKILLS
This was one of the very first modules I studied at the University of Portsmouth. Having no prior skills of working with camera and sound equipment, we had many workshops which helped us get to grips with how to use and handle all the equipment safely and properly.
Each group was tasked with creating two VT’s lasting at most, two minutes. When first joining university I was a keen editor so naturally, I chose that role. I soon found out how difficult this role was. Because I was using a different programme for editing it was difficult to understand and organise footage and audio.
Our first VT was on the LGBTQ+ community and society at the University of Portsmouth to raise awareness of such an important subject. Our second VT was on the history of the New Theatre Royal in Portsmouth, to again raise awareness of stage productions, which many believe is becoming a dying art.
Introduction to TV Skills
This was one of my first modules I started in year one at the University of Portsmouth.
In this module we were tasked with creating a short as-live television show. Having no prior knowledge of working as a sound operator I decided to put myself forward for the role. I quickly discovered I had quite the knack for working with the audio desk which was in the White Swan studios.
Amongst the other groups, my group also decided to go with a music theme for our show, named ‘GenreScope’. In our show we planned to discover music from different places around the country, to make things easier for us we went with Portsmouth. We originally planned to have a band perform at the end of the show, so I had researched how to control the sound from more than two mics. This plan did not go ahead so I did not have to do this in the end.
Overall, I’d say the show went quite well for our first ever go at it, but I definitely planned to aim higher as the years went on.
