After how many musicians Corpse had streamed with, he thought he wouldn’t be starstruck by anyone else. But then Rae asked him a pretty big question.
“Want to stream with (Y/N) tonight?”
(Y/N) was a former YouTuber that rose to fame basically overnight. She went from making covers in her bedroom to making her own music, which got so big it charted over some of the best selling artists out there. Her music wasn’t what Corpse usually listened to, but he wanted to give it a try to support a fellow creator, and found himself really enjoying it.
When Rae asked about streaming with her and (Y/N), Corpse couldn’t say yes quick enough. Then, of course, his anxiety kicked in. He kept thinking about how he could mess up this interaction, all the wrong things he could say and do. Moments before the stream was supposed to start, Corpse found himself wanting to back out due to this anxiety.
The familiar starting lobby of Among Us lit up Corpse’s screen. His friends were all there, with the big outlier being a yellow character with (Y/N)’s YouTube name over it. He took a deep breath and joined the ongoing Discord call, immediately met with voices overlapping and calling out at one another.
“Corpse!” Ra’s voice cut through them all. “Welcome!”
“Whoa,” an unfamiliar voice marveled. “His voice is so deep! Is this who you’ve been telling me about Rae?”
“This is him,” Rae confirmed. “Corpse, this is (Y/N). (Y/N), Corpse.”
Corpse’s heart raced knowing that Rae talked about him to (Y/N). He hoped he could live up to whatever expectations were likely in place.
“You guys are gonna have to go easy on me,” (Y/N) said. “I’ve never played Among Us before and you’re all, like, professionals.”
“There’s no going easy, only yelling,” Sean joked.
The game started and Corpse’s screen indicated that he was a crewmate. The familiar Skeld map loaded and he decided to start with the hardest task on the map: the card swipe.
“Watch me fail card swipe in front of (Y/N),” he told his chat as (Y/N)’s character followed him into Admin. “Or she kills me, which would be an honor.”
He started trying to scan his card, only for the negative sound to fill his headphones. He sighed and tried again, only to fail again. It felt like deja vu as he kept attempting, and failing, to finish the simple task.
Come on, I didn’t mean what I said literally.
He was saved by a body being found. The first thing he heard as everyone unmuted was (Y/N)’s laugh.
“Corpse,” she said, “why are you standing at the card swipe task for so long?”
Sean jumped in before Corpse could respond, “Oh no Corpse, not again.”
“I, uh, I’ve had a bad track record with the card swipe,” Corpse admitted.
“Oh!” (Y/N) was still giggling. Corpse felt his face burning with slight embarrassment. “In that case, I can clear Corpse for this one. He’s been in Admin the whole round so there was no way he could’ve killed anyone.”
They voted to skip and continued on with the next round. Corpse quickly ran into Admin again and finished his card swipe in one try. He started moving to Electrical where his next few tasks were. He walked in to find he was alone besides Karl, who took this as his opportunity to kill Corpse then vent out.
Corpse stared at his screen for a long time, where his ghost bean was floating over his dead body. Through his shock, he began to laugh. He couldn’t count how many times Karl had killed him early in the game whenever they played together. It had basically become some weird, unspoken tradition between the two of them. So, keeping to the tradition, he decided to send a voice message to Karl in response.
When his body was found by Rae and everyone unmuted, Karl’s familiar laugh rang out through the lobby.
“Whatcha laughing at, Karl?” Toast questioned.
“Okay, so I just got a message from Corpse and I thought it was him responding to my 8 Ball,” Karl explained, “but instead it was this.”
The sound of Corpse screaming played through Karl’s mic. The lobby erupted into laughter and began voting Karl out, even though the younger streamer tried to plead his case with some made up story about why Corpse would’ve sent him that voice message.
“Wait!” (Y/N) called above everyone. “Wait, was that Corpse legit screaming?”
“It was, wanna hear it again?” Karl asked. He didn’t wait for a response before playing the message again.
“That’s amazing!” (Y/N) said. “Does he scream in his music?”
She knows I make music? Corpse thought. Rae must’ve told her. Still, the fact that she knows my music exists is incredible.
“He does!” Leslie responded. “I’ll send a link to his best one in chat if you want to check it out.”
“Change of plans guys, everyone vote for me so I can listen to Corpse screaming.”
Corpse realized he was smiling to himself when his screen went dark and he saw his reflection in the monitor. There was something different about (Y/N) talking about listening to his music than when anyone else he had streamed with talked about it. He couldn’t place it, but knowing that (Y/N) wanted to go listen to one of his songs while playing the game made him feel fuzzy inside.
She wasn’t voted out, but as he completed his tasks Corpse came past her ghost, indicating that she had been killed shortly after their meeting. A sound played through Corpse’s headphones and he noticed a red exclamation mark over the chat in the top left corner.
CORPSE YOUR MUSIC IS SO GOOD!!!!!!
Before he could respond, another message came in: I may or may not have listened to like three songs after the meeting ended. I’m glad I’m dead so I can finish your entire discography.
“Oh my God,” Corpse breathed out loud.
He took a deep breath and tried to respond as calmly as possible.
Thank you! I work hard on it :)
Near seconds later, another message popped up: I can tell. It’s really well done. Rae said you do it all in your bedroom?
“Rae must’ve told her so much about me,” Corpse said. “I wonder if she asked or if Rae just told her about all of us.”
Yeah, I don’t have a label and I’ve never gone to a studio. All done in the comfort of my apartment.
That’s amazing!!! Please teach me sometime, I don’t know the first thing about music editing.
Another body was found before Corpse could respond to this. As the meeting went on he just stared at the last message (Y/N) sent. He couldn’t believe she had actually asked him to teach her how to edit her own songs. He figured it would’ve been easier to have someone else do that stuff for her, and all she had to do was write and sing.
“I just wanna say one thing before we end this meeting,” came Charlie’s voice, which shocked Corpse considering Charlie had been dead since round one. “I just wanna tell Corps and (Y/N) to get a room.”
The lobby laughed as Bretman, the only other dead player, unmuted to add, “Yeah (Y/N), I don’t want to see you flirting with my Corpsey like that. It’s making me mad jealous.”
The call went quiet again as Corpse felt like his face was on fire. He wasn’t embarrassed by the messages in the slightest, and he hoped (Y/N) wasn’t either. But he also didn’t want her to get the wrong idea about his intentions. He was sure nothing about his messages seemed flirty, but he wasn’t sure how she was reading into it now.
Suddenly, an incoming call from Discord pulled him out of the game and he saw that it was (Y/N) trying to privately call him. He stared at the screen for a long time, not sure what to do. Finally, he forced himself to press “answer”.
“Corpsey, huh?” (Y/N) asked. He could hear the amused grin in her voice.
Corpse couldn’t help but smile as well. “Yeah, that’s what they call me sometimes. Mainly Bretman. He’s a bit flirty.”
“That’s the Leo in him,” (Y/N) commented.
“That’s what people say about me, too, but I don’t understand what that means.”
(Y/N) giggled. “It’s an astrology thing. I’m really into that stuff. I made Rae tell me when everyone’s birthdays were so I could figure out what your zodiac signs were and shit.”
“Is that why Rae told you so much about me?”
Corpse cringed after the question escaped his lips. He sounded so desperate, he didn’t mean to but he definitely did. She was gonna think he was a loser.
“No, I actually asked about you,” she responded. “Rae told me about your deep voice and said how you made music, and I got intrigued. I was waiting until the game to actually look you up or anything. I wanted to have an authentic reaction to your voice.”
Corpse chuckled. “Well, it sounded pretty authentic. That’s the reaction most people have when they hear it.”
“I’d believe it. I’ve never heard someone with a voice as low as yours before. And your screaming is incredible. You could make some hardcore metal music with a scream like that.”
“Although, I guess the screaming hurts your throat with your GERD and stuff.”
Corpse noticed that the game had ended and it was waiting for him to rejoin the lobby. He clicked “Play Again” and loaded into the spawn, but decided to stay on the call with (Y/N) instead of joining the chat lobby.
“It doesn’t hurt as bad as most people think. Only when I scream for too long,” he explained.
“Does that happen often?”
“When I’m making music, yes. I try not to scream too much so I don’t fuck up my voice, but sometimes it happens. It’s kind of a good pain, though.”
“Kinky.” There was a pause before (Y/N) added, “Fuck, I didn’t mean to say that out loud. I’m sorry, you must think I’m creepy now.”
“Not at all,” Corpse said. “Trust me, I read worse about myself every day. It’s the struggles of being an Internet heartthrob.”
The two laughed together. Corpse found himself easing into his conversation with (Y/N) a lot more now. He just wanted to keep talking to her the entire game and not have to join the loud lobby of his friends again.
Unfortunately, a message came in from Rae asking them to re-join the call so that they could start the next game. (Y/N) must’ve received the same message because she sighed.
“I want to talk to you more outside of the game,” she told him. “I’d like to discuss the music editing and stuff. I’m really intrigued to learn how you do it all on your own.”
“I’d love to tell you. Maybe we could work on a song together sometime.”
The suggestion slipped out without much thought. Corpse hoped she knew it was a meaningless suggestion and not that he was just trying to use her to make music. He had dealt with one too many people like that before and knew how much it sucked.
(Y/N) was silent for so long that Corpse wondered if she had left the call. When she finally responded, it took him by surprise. “You mean that?”
“Yeah, if you’d like to.”
“Are you kidding me? I’d love to! That would be so awesome!”
“Okay. Well, call me after the stream, we can arrange some details.”
“Will do. See you in the spaceship, Corpse.”
Corpse was smiling to himself again as they joined the Discord call again. He had completely forgotten about his own stream until the game started, the big red leaders reading “IMPOSTER” at the top of Corpse’s screen giving him the opportunity to look over at his chat. Everyone was teasing him over his interaction with (Y/N), as his fans would.
“Shut up guys,” Corpse said, but he couldn’t hide the lightness in his voice.
Yeah, he was definitely starstruck, and maybe a little bit more as well.
