How to Fix Underwriting

1. Slow down at emotionally important moments.

Big emotions need space to land. If a scene feels rushed, pause the plot briefly to show how the moment affects the character.

2. Add reactions, not explanations.

Instead of explaining what a character feels, show it through physical responses, hesitation, or small actions that reveal emotion naturally.

3. Ground every scene in the senses.

If a scene feels thin, add one or two sensory details—sound, texture, smell, or temperature—to make the moment feel lived-in.

4. Let thoughts interrupt action.

A line of internal thought can deepen a scene without slowing it too much. Thoughts show stakes, fear, longing, or conflict beneath the action.

5. Expand consequences, not events.

You don’t need more things to happen—you need to show what matters. Focus on how events change relationships, decisions, or self-perception.

6. Strengthen setting where emotion peaks.

The environment should echo or contrast the emotion of the scene. Setting is not decoration—it’s emotional reinforcement.

7. Add specific details instead of general ones.

Underwriting often relies on vague language. Swap “they argued” for one sharp line of dialogue or a specific breaking point.

8. Let dialogue breathe.

Short dialogue exchanges without pauses can feel flat. Add beats—silence, gestures, interruptions—to give the conversation weight.

9. Show transitions between scenes.

If scenes jump too quickly, readers feel disoriented. A brief transition helps establish time, mood, and emotional continuity.

10. Clarify stakes early in the scene.

If readers don’t know what can be lost, scenes feel empty. Make sure the character wants something specific and fears losing it.

11. Use the “what are they feeling right now?” check.

After each major beat, ask what emotion is dominant in that moment. If it’s missing on the page, the scene is likely underwritten.

12. Expand scenes that feel “too clean.”

If a scene resolves too neatly or quickly, it probably needs more tension. Messy emotions and unresolved feelings add depth.

So, there is officially three chapters left of Her Saving Grace to upload. After nearly two years of consistent work, and many do overs my first ever fanfic/book is finished and soon it’ll be all yours!

Book two, Dorothea’s Day’s Off (Guess where I got that title from heh) is started, but in rough condition. It’ll take me a long while before it ever reaches you all…. Unfortunately…

In the meantime, I thought I would begin posting my poetry! I started writing poetry all the way back in 7th grade! It was what got me into writing and I’d love to upload some of my poems. Maybe even my oldest ones! (if I can find them)

I just want to keep making art and sharing it until I run dry of ideas. ❤️‍🩹

Two chapters tonight ❤️

I hold this chapter very dear to my heart, despite the quality of it as it is not edited at all. The reason being, this chapter is written from experience therefore I found way to challenging to edit, and re read, and re work. I was the same age as Dorthea is when I attempted suicide in this exact way, I’ll never forget that period of my life just like Dorthea will never forget this time period, and the time period that lead her to this point. I’ve always said that maybe if I write what I feel it’ll fall in the hands of someone who needs to hear it. So if anyone out there is struggling know that, like Dorthea, you are so loved. Even if it doesn’t feel that way, there’s always at least one person who be heart broken if you were to leave.

So, this chapter is short. Very sad. But it means a lot to me because the character of Kentucky has existed since I first wrote out the first 12 chapters of this book on lined paper! I was watching old Darby interviews one night when he mentioned a friend from high-school named Kentucky. Immediately I thought of Kentucky Fried Chicken. So, this character, that I had developed so much story for finally had a name! Sorry to Darby’s buddy whose name I stole. But it fits so well because now he has a perfectly logical reason to take over the KFC!

Fun fact; his original name was buddy, or something oddly basic like John, or Kevin. I like Kentucky though. And I’ve loved this character since I first created him alongside Thea. So here is his backstory.

Two uploads in one day!? 👀 because I realized there was actually a part 3 (kind of) to the divorce chapters and had to give it to you ASAP!! To be honest, I don't really like these chapters because of how weird I felt writing them. I really tried to focus on Dorthea, and my own personal characters, rather than Priscilla and Darby. But these chapters are crucial to the book so yay! Dorthea is a child of divorce, I guess.
