Nonsense Days
It had been a whole new life of nonsense days. By the time we had made it to the present, every friend I had lined the streets.
It was nice, living in a neighborhood of your friends. It was nice to know people inside and out. Our house was third on the street- it had dark sleek paint. Maybe it always had, maybe you and him and your friend had painted it that way. You probably had- you could see the three of you shrieking in laughing, paint splashed all over those denim shorts you’ve had for years.
The sun liked to show its face around now. We had class, or maybe a meeting to go to.
The nonsense days make my vision gold.
There was something about these AA meetings that made no sense. You go into the room, and it’s lined with books. Books after books after nameless books. It had an overall pleasant feel, even though the whole time we all just wanted to get it over with. When you’re with your friends at these sorts of things, you just want to laugh it off.
The instructor is older. Not greying, just sort of out of your age range. If you didn’t have Owen, you might have found him attractive in a strong-jawed-smart and-commanding way. But Owen and I have a good thing going.
He’s strict though. And right now I’m not in the mood.
So we pair off, and the music starts. You don’t think about it all. A friend from high school does a bit of ironic two step with you. Then the music stops.
You switch off. Thank god- Cora can actually dance. A waltz later though, the music stops and you don’t. A smile and an eye roll slid to my face. Oh well, I think. I always get out first.
On the way out, you look back at the bookstore. The light turns the windows pink, and you can’t make out the outlines of your friends dancing inside.
By the time I make it outside, I see that the bottle of vodka I keep by the bed is empty.
“Shit,” You say, shooting an accusatory glare at David. He just shrugs. So I lift the bottle into the trash, and watch the bottle slide through the hole that’s just big enough for it to fit.
“That’s a bottle.” The instructor is saying behind you. “Vodka,” he adds.
“Fuck off,” is all you say. You aren’t self destructive.
The instructor watches you leave.
It’s later when I’m walking down the road. I want to make it to the shops. I don’t like the way they make these new stores. Makes me feel like I’m in California all over again. After a couple of price tags of fifties and too many bored glances out the windows, you get tired of the white walls and the air conditioning.
Then there he is. You’ve probably seen him before. Everyone else in here is young. I’ve seen them all before too. But he’s older. He’s got that sadness you had in you back in the Real World, before the nonsense days took over.
You can tell he’s all wrapped up in the nonsense too.
“Hey,” you want to hear what he has to say.
So he talks. The problem is, his mouth moves, and you move out to the street, but you can’t remember a word he says. That happens to me sometimes. The blackouts.
The sky purples and it’s dusk now. The blur has sort of worn off, and you let him disappear you into a bakery. The walls are this pale blue, and you can tell it used to be a place of love. The lady behind the counter has a sad, heavy feel behind her eyes that comes with age. Her grey hair is pulled loosely at her name, and she seems to be made up of many softening circles.
She lays out bagels in front of you, and you try to take a bite of each one.
“You’re doing it wrong.” The man just sits beside you. You can’t place the sadness that hangs around him. It feels like guilt. He’s sweating it out.
Finally she gives up and gives you a block of cheese for the last bagel. The failed ones line the counter. She’s so patient with you.
With every bite you take, she gives you a shot of tequila. It’s so sweet. It’s pulling at your cheeks, and you smile and smile. The nonsense is back. You look up at her.
She doesn’t really want to pour you another shot, but she wrinkles the corners of her eyes and does it anyways.
“Whoever left you all alone seriously fucked up.” You say, so earnest and honest. She’s your best friend, in a way.
You know she had to raise everything she has from infancy- and the empty shop was what made it all worse.
She just shook her head. “It was him.”
His guilt turns colder. The stools holding you both up seem to buzz with knowledge.
The liquor floats above you like a cloud. It’s fun.
“You?” I ask the man, curiously. I can’t stop feeling like myself and an observer at the same time, but every part of me is curious.
“He left me years ago. Was such a good man, charismatic. Brought people in to the shop like nothing else. Then when he left, it was just me and the walls.”
He sags. You know he can’t come back here now. He went out and got dropped on over and over till he was damaged goods, and the old woman sat here and greyed.
It’s time for you to leave. He stays put on the stool, and you see that familiar look in her eyes. The look that’s admitting that they can’t help you, and that their life has moved on. You can’t do anything for either of you now, and you might not remember his teaching, but you got this one.
It’s time to go.
You dance home, feeling like moonlight. The sky was so dusky, you were so heady. You loved being drunk.
You danced up and down the shop’s streets, and they smiled at you. You passed every stop you had on the way there. Oh, the nonsense! It was wonderful. Your heart seemed to sing as you reached your street.
Where… where was your house? You searched and searched for that creamy black paneling. The light on in the attic, but it wasn’t there. Oh, the fun. You grabbed the golden light post, swinging yourself in a circle.
“Kayla?” It’s this guy you went to high school with. He was always nice, and he had a new car with the top down. “What are you doing?”
You have a secret. “I forgot where I live.”
He laughs and sighs a little. Everyone on the street knows that you drink till your cheeks go pink. “Get in. I can give you a ride. You’re only the third house down.”
As far as you’re aware, your house just vanished. Fun, fun, fun. I can feel myself start to wake up as he drives me home.
“Don’t tell Owen I’m drunk again, okay?” He nods a little, speeding you off to home. What a good guy. There’s a bible in his backseat.
Owen sometimes looks at you, surprised. You’re always happy. You’re always fun. So he gives you a little surprised grin. But sometimes he looks at you in this specific, direct way. Like he’s sad. Or wistful. Like he knows that the nonsense is back. But he loves you still. But what can he do?
And you’re on top of the world, and it’s all so fun fun fun. But you can’t help but think.
There’s nothing more sad than someone so out of control.
I wake up in the tent, cold and covered in droplets of water. The sleep had been that deep sleep. When I have dreams it’s always like I’m still awake, and just walking into a nonsense world. It’s always so disorienting, waking up outside. The sky is so bright, and it leaves an ache behind my eyes. I try to sit up, but I can’t.
“What a good dream.” I say. I wish… I wish I could go back to feeling loved.
Domestics
Your girlfriend washes her face getting back from the party in the morning.
She has a late assignment so she boots up her computer while pouring milk for breakfast.
She knows it takes a few minutes. She knows the milk needs to go to the front of the fridge so you don't need to search for it. Otherwise you’ll open the fridge just to call her name.
She knows that she forgot to do her skincare last night and that yours will do the trick.
Her mascara is dusting her undereyesÂ
The water didn't rub it all the way away
You can see her bra a little through her shirt- its one of those bands shirts with all the holes
You know her friend cut the holes in it for a particularly wild party
Your girlfriend is listening to Kanye West, and you laugh a little
You don’t listen to Kanye West in houses where you are a visitor
Its 10:04 am and shes a little tired
You know she’s in a good mood by the ease of how she speaks
She dances a little. You know everything about her. She likes to dance.
You know she feels guilty listening to Kanye West, but she has Power stuck in her head because of The Bling Ring. You know what movies she watches- you like to check her Letterboxd.
It reminds you that there are so many modern ways to learn everything about a person. You spend every day with her. You still scroll through her Pinterest when her birthday is coming up.
Maybe she's your young wife, and you guys are far enough away from the wedding that it’s easy, but still early enough in life to know each other's drink orders at a bar.
Your girlfriend is making her way through law school, trying to get her band off the ground. You like to wear green sweaters now, and have a boss that’s nice but not too nice. It's a good life.
You look at your girlfriend's skincare she buys online. You look at the weird green tea coffee pods she buys at Costco. You look at her car keys on the counter.Â
She’s pouring over her laptop now, coffee steaming next to her. She gulps it down black. She doesn't like the taste much, but she likes to drink it.
She’s been rewatching all of her favorite movies from high school, but she doesn't really like them as much. It’s weird, now, that she’s got domesticity, to watch fucked up kids.Â
She’s an adult.
chapter 3 of my death note fanslation is done!
(in which light helps sayu do her math homework, L wonders why kira didn't kill him, times of death are messed with, and family dinners are had)
major differences to me:
the shinigami imply "diary" when they refer to ryuk's death note - longer post here
light: "i have a certain advantage" -> "i have a specific reason to be confident" (referring to having his father as a police chief)
sayu: "why do you have to lock your door?" -> "why'd you lock your door?" (implying light locking his door is a new thing)
ryuk: "but [getting to the top of the npa is] years and years from now, if he makes it at all…" -> "but i'm sure that'd take years… what's he thinking…?" (ryuk doesn't doubt light's ability in the original!)
L: "so it's got to be… because he doesn't know what i look like…?" -> "if so, then it really is because the real me is unclear…" (implying he already had a suspicion that kira needs an identity; does not imply a face in particular) - longer post here
in the viz the cop says L was interested in the time of death; in the original the cop says L specifically requested they look into it
sayu: "hi, daddy!" -> "welcome home, dad!" / light: "dad, welcome home." -> "welcome home."
onomatopoeia restored to show that light washes his own dishes
light: "i think you're going to enjoy what happens next, ryuk" -> "i think i'll be able to give you a little entertainment again, ryuk"
light: "ever since i heard that [touching the death note lets you see ryuk], i've been keeping it on me…" -> "[…] i've been keeping it on me all the time, but…" (emphasis mine. the original idiom literally translates to "i don't let it leave my skin")

My kanamafu WIP…
Some art I made of my OCs
To My Sister
We’re about to turn seventeen. Are you excited?
I wish I knew what your name would have been. I keep up a running narration in my head, for you. I like to pretend I’m in a book, or a movie. I like to pretend my thoughts are for someone.Â
Sometimes, late at night, when I’m crying a little too hard, and trying a little too desperately to hug myself like I’m someone else- I try to talk to you. I fumble for words, wanting to say your name- but I come up blank. It’s cruel- giving me two names I hate, and leaving you with none.
Some say that twins can be polar opposites. But the ones in books and movies aren’t really polar opposites- we are. We are, because you grew up dead. And I didn’t.
It’s funny, because I’m not really having the best time of it. But in my head you're alive.
Sometimes in my head I’m already dead.Â
When I die- will you be excited to meet me? When I see you again, I hope you’re proud of me.
Sometimes, I try to beg the world to let me start over, and let me have you this time. I plead- I reason. I say, “I’ll be perfect!” but I probably won’t be.
I say, “I’ll love her!” But I don't know if I will. I’ll never know.
I look up, and ask “why?”
Why couldn’t I have had her?Â
But I never get an answer.
I wonder who you would've been. Would you have had the same stubborn curls? The same yellow-green eyes? I once had a cat with my eyes- she had a freckle right in them, just like I do.
The cat’s gone too now- in the same way you’re gone. Â
Would you have had the same bad habits? Would you bite down your nails, and hunch your back, and lie?
Would you hate your height and your arms and your wide smile?Â
I wonder what it would have been like, having you there. Maybe I wouldn’t have given up so easy. Maybe if I had had someone to protect, I wouldn’t have let it all happen to me.
Or maybe you would have been the protector- standing up for me, like I wish someone would've.
Maybe we would have stayed up late at night, talking. We would share our clothes. Maybe you would've braided my hair, or painted the nails on my right hand. I never used to be able to manage my hair. When I was eleven I lay in bed so long it grew mold.
Maybe we would've helped each other with our homework. We might've shared our dreams, and passions.Â
You would've slept there across from me- and my mind wouldn’t play tricks in the night. I would never see faces watching me from across the room. I wouldn’t wake up and see Her standing over me, unsure if her pinched lips and hollow eyes were real or my nightmare.
I would never be alone.Â
I can never come to terms with what was taken from me. There's nothing that could ever replace you. There's nothing that can ever make this right.
You would’ve been seventeen soon.Â
Are you excited?

By the Window of the New House
The quiet beauty of the unplucked flower
Rests entirely in the eyes of the beholder
It's not sad- because it’s a fucking flower.
Don’t hand me coffee and beg me please, please do not be sad anymore.Â
I’m fucking tired, okay?
On our wedding day - you kept saying “forever, forever.”
Yes, it was sweet, but it made me feel a little bad for you
In the way you feel bad for a child that wants to be a fantasy creature when they grow up.
In the sad, tilted, way you are sad knowing that you won’t live forever, and you brought a child into the world just to leave them alone in twenty years. It
Is the way that the words “forever” feel. Like a verdict. It is
The way the words “i’m tired” feel. Like an admission of guilt. It is theÂ
Way a mother feels when they first ever raise a hand to their child, but only because they were just so, so tired, and they couldn't stand to feel this way, not for forever. It is the way
I feel now, handing back the coffee to you, and trying to, in this small action, have you know that it is not about you, or me, or even the fucking flower. The problem is forever.
The problem is living till we are eighty or so. The problem is dying.
The problem is waiting.
The problem is time, stretching out in front of you, like an endless hallway with your father around the corner, still.
The problem is growing to wilt, the problem is being picked.
There is no way the flower could not hold some tragic beauty. We look at it, it dies.Â
There is no way that forever could never not be a lie.
There is too much milk in the coffee you bring me, and maybe you know this because there is an apologetic look on your face as you take it back. It is because we are in love that you know it is okay, that I would buy milk by the gallon and sit it in the fridge for you to bring to me. It is because we are in love that you hand it to me to let me hand it back. It is because we are in love that I smile apologetically too.
What are we apologising for?Â
It is because we are in love that nihilism doesn’t feel quite right. Because while we wilt, and wait to die, it still matters that you decided, with love in your heart, to pick me and bring me coffee. It still means something that I do not like milk.
Once forever has dried up and I have died, it will not matter. You will die along with me, I assume.
You will not bring me another coffee, then. It will not matter that we sit in this unnamed, unfurnished sitting room, and I am letting the window toss me about and dye me yellow.
It will not matter that the coffee will sit by your side as you laze about into the late hours of the evening. If you died in the night, the coffee would still sit beside you, and curdle. I will not want it then, nor will I want you. I assume I will die alone without you there.
You do not like listening to new songs in the way I do not like milk. You do not like unfamiliar words taking your attention.
I love you, because I am your wife, and vice versa. There is no need to explain all of that.
You understand.
We met as nihilists, but now we have grown tired. We protested how much it did not matter to us, how nothing mattered. We yelled at the top of our lungs that we didn’t care. To be bitter, and dark, we learned to like feeling bad.
To prove how much we didn’t care, we took our coffee dry. We took our pills dry. We plucked every flower just to let it die.
We threw forever back into its own face. But now we are tired.
I look at you now, and you appear to me as young and old as you ever will be.Â
You understand.
I hope I do not appear ugly in my age. I hope I do not appear foolish in my youth. I hand the coffee back to you, and once again feel as if I am about to be your wife.Â
That you are bothering me slightly, with your assertions of “forever, forever”
I am still young and nihilistic, taking my coffee black, and saying that it doesn’t matter so much that I would like to be married to you about it.
You understand. You take the coffee from me, and I turn in my seat to watch you take a sip. My eyes follow the coffee to your throat as you swallow.
We are two people who should not ever have children. We are two people who should never grow flowers. We will cut them down.
I am your mother. You are my father. In twenty years, forever will have passed.Â
I love you still.

FIC RECS ANYONE???
My favorite kind of fanfiction is when it's all of the silly little characters hanging out within canon. Megumi, Yujii, and Nobara hanging out in their dorms in S1? That's my shit. Light and L bickering while Misa tags along to the library or some database during chain times? Fuck yeah. Those little glimpses of day to day life we get in the manga/anime, that's what I want to enjoy. I like them most when they were happy, but I loooove it when it happens within canon.
New chapter up!!!
Anyone who has read it, I would love feedback and to know if it is confusing/dragging... I have no beta readers or even friends who read/write fanfic, so I'm just going blind.
Crash - Chapter 6 - hatsunefucku - Dear Evan Hansen - Pasek & Paul/Levenson [Archive of Our Own]
Just found a inoverse fic I abandoned- btw I wrote this pre finding out illi’s name or that he was canonically a girl, so my main character was literally just Gerard, and I happened to have him mistaken for a girl in the beginning… (foreshadowing ig?)
Anyways here it is: should I go give birth to it on ao3 only to neglect it while I work on ten million WIPS at once????
