kala-paswan:
Kala had been looking forward to the Halloween party for the last couple of weeks now. The holiday wasn’t celebrated in her own country, and the very little she knew about it was what she had learned from books or tv. Still the idea of a costume ball had been enough to keep her busy as she planned the perfect outfit for the night. The decision to go as Poison Ivy had been made after she had decided to wear the designer green gown she had brought with her. It was the perfect opportunity to wear the dress and with that she had decided on a costume that would suit the dress.
It had taken longer than expected to get ready on the night of, her hair and makeup taking hours of preparation. The woman working on her hair had taken her time in putting it up, adding the twined vines and flowers to it as she went. The makeup artist had done a subtle green look, but then had gone on to draw vines tracing along Kala’s arms as though they had grown from the dress. By the time she was ready she had arrived at the ball after it was already in full swing. She didn’t know where to look first, the decorations along the palace halls and rooms were beautiful. Just as beautiful were all the elaborate costumes people had put together for the event.
She immediately was drawn into the crowd of people, making her way around to compliment people on their costumes and take part in idle chit chat. She accepted a few dances, most of the music unfamiliar to her but still enjoyable. Finally she was able to slip away for a free moment to catch her breath, and she made her way off to the side, grabbing a glass of champagne off a tray in passing. She stood off to the side, sipping at her champagne as she watched everyone before she sensed someone coming up beside her. “It’s quite the party isn’t it? So much to look at…”
It was one of those rare nights one had the acceptance of the masses to become someone completely different. The hall was filled with costumes elaborate and subtle and Prakash had entertained himself with observations of those choices. There were people who had erased themselves behind a mask and then there were people, people like Kala and himself, who had used to opportunity to elevate their own personality and looks with the costume.
He grinned, “You don’t say…” while his own choice of attire was born out of convenience still eccentric enough to not be out of character, the same could not be said about Kala. Certainly no expense had been spared with her dress and the green complimented her looks perfectly, “I’m surprised I didn’t have to fight through a sea of masked devils fighting for your hand just to get here,” he teased. He leaned against the table, “But still, please tell me something more exciting has happened this evening than chitchat, I’m still waiting to see someone get scared out of their wits.”
