Anyways speaking of Techno (yes more DSMP ramble bc bored), he's not safe from my analyzing of his actions either. This is all just how I personally view his character! I know a lot of Techno Apologists might get upset at me for this one. This is going to be a long one, buckle up everyone. Also! Spoilers, for uh, pretty much everything?
Personally? After the Revolution arc, I fully started to disagree with Techno's motivations, ESPECIALLY with how he handles and treats everyone from that point on.
In the context of the Dream SMP (AT THAT TIME I want to emphasize), there was one thing I do think he was justified in: anarchy and anti-government. Given how their world operates and the mechanics of Minecraft, it would not be beneficial for everyone to live under any form of government and the rule of a single person or body of people. As evidenced by Jschatt and Wilbur, power corrupts or is an opportunity for corrupt individuals to fill the spot. To the people of the DSMP and especially Techno, the one instance they had of government was chalk full of corruption, hell, even the presidential election they held was literally corrupted.
It made perfect sense for Techno to be wholly against the Government, he had every reason to be. I understand that when he saw Tubbo get elected, he just thought the same thing would repeat itself all over again. But here's where it gets complicated and it gets hard to understand really what his motivations for hating the government mean for everyone else after that event.
Techno exclaims, "I'm a person!" to Tommy after he ultimately sides with Tubbo once again, claiming that they never saw him as a person, just a weapon. He's justified in this, from his perspective, that was how he felt and it's valid. But its hypocritical, did Techno see everyone around him as a person? In his one-track-minded pursuit of the destruction of the Government, he casts aside a lot of morality in favor of his goal. Really think about it, what problems did the government cause under Tubbo's rule that wasn't directly influenced by Dream or a product of Techno's intimidation?
Tommy's exile was a result of Tubbo feeling the pressure of the position he was thrust into by Wilbur, and Dream practically breathing down his neck for him to do it or else he faced having everyone locked inside the obsidian walls he was already building at that time. Additionally, a lot of the decisions "made by Tubbo" were because he was heavily influenced by everyone else around him, they pushed him in every other direction to get him to do what they wanted because they knew he didn't know what he was doing. In that regard, the government was heavily flawed, but not so flawed that it could not be mended or justify Techno's future actions.
The Butcher Army was started because they found Techno to be a threat, and they were RIGHT. He was literally a war criminal they were letting roam free, from their perspective, they had every reason to be afraid of him not actually having denounced his violent ways. Before he was ever even threatened by the Butcher army or L'manburg's government, this was even shown to be true, as evidenced by the fact he had been collecting wither skulls with the sole purpose of, at some point, using them against L'manburg to kill and destroy everything.
He claims he hates the government, that the government is the root of evil, but really what is he actually motivated by? He literally sides with with Dream, the perpetrator of most of the conflicts on the server, including the supposed government caused ones. It isn't like he is oblivious to that either, Tommy tells him how he was exiled and what he experienced during that time. Techno is an intelligent person, I don't think he doesn't know about how much Dream is pulling the strings behind the scenes. After they form an alliance when Tommy escapes Dream's torment, he later sides with Tubbo, his best friend from the beginning. Techno is angered by this and cries betrayal, and subsequently spawns all of those withers he had been collecting in his supposed retirement.
When I look at this scene after looking back at the previous interactions Tommy and Techno had during their alliance, Tommy was not the one who betrayed Techno. Or, at least not the only one, depending on how you see it since I do think Techno genuinely thought Tommy betrayed him. From the beginning Tommy had repeatedly distanced himself from being involved in the complete destruction of L'manburg, verbally saying to Techno he did not want that to happen. Techno, while not outwardly saying he wouldn't do it, still gives hints that he wasn't exactly opposed to it either through dialogue like "We'll see when we get to that". We then see he's been amassing a very large collection of wither skulls, which was a reveal that happened before Techno was aware of the Butcher Army. He collected those skulls for a reason, and I think there's enough evidence through his dialogue that he planned to use them at some point, with or without an actual reason other than wanting anarchy.
Tommy very clearly states he just wanted his discs back and to get back at Tubbo, but he openly is against hurting any of his friends or destroying his home, but Techno obviously had wanted to do this whether Tommy had liked it or not, he would've betrayed him anyway had Tommy not broken up their alliance in the first place. Tommy's reason for even abandoning their partnership was arguably a more justifiable one regardless! He had disliked who he had become, being with Techno made him more accepting of violence, he was tired of fighting with the people he cared about, he just wanted it to end.
How did Techno respond? He sides with the man who he knew had been tormenting Tommy in exile for weeks, and then forms a crater where the homes of people who had mostly done nothing to him had he not provoked them had been. From Techno's perspective, all we are given for justification of his deplorable actions is quite literally only, "Government Bad", we see him kill, destroy, and cause pain in the lives of all of the SMP members for this single goal. And for what? What does he want to gain from that? It gets hard to see why he's doing all of this, when it becomes clear his ultimate goal is not with the interests of anyone else in mind, but to literally just... cause destruction, to kill. He claims he isn't seen as a person, but it's very clear he doesn't see anyone else as one either.
Anyway, like Wilbur, I don't hate Techno! He's another one of my favorites, I just don't,,, don't think that anything he did between the Revolution and now was justified, but that's just how I see it! I know from his perspective, he really did feel wronged by lots of people, and that the government wasn't all Peachy Keen throughout the entirety of the exile arc and after that. It also seems as if Techno is more or less leaving everyone alone, although he harbors a very interesting hatred for Tubbo despite him not even participating in any government anymore.
