Powerless

I’ve practiced waving the wand, chanted empty “abracadaberas.” There were no conjured rabbits, not even a simple Jack of Hearts. For so long, I’ve yearned to master magic if only to make myself disappear. But not even Houdini could escape this. There’s no key to hold in throat, no use dislocating shoulders, no benefit to holding my breath. I do not cry until you’ve gone and maybe that’s all the magic I can muster. I takes all my power to deny you seeing how you’ve wrecked me. I wish I had become the magician but you’ve cast your power over me. I am just your trick, left in pieces

The book I'm reading at the moment. It's loaded with meaningful quotes which I love. It is an interesting story, but I don't feel I'm connecting with the characters except for Hurstwood. Every so often I felt a pang of genuine dislike for his character. It's possible the author intended for us to never truly know Carrie. I don't know. I've almost finished it though.
