     there’s a recognition that startles her brain into focus,    dark gaze landing on the familiar face.    it takes a moment before delila’s brain catches up,   remembering where she had seen the other girl before.   guilt ebbs in her chest.    delila had snuck away from the occurrence on the dock,       fleeing from the increasing chaos that was always present on the isle.     without thought,    her lips open to shout a brief ‘hey’ in order to get the other’s attention.     her feet move briskly to reach her before delila begins to speak.    “did everything get figured out with the crates?”

Securing the bandages around his wrist, Jeremy stopped short at the other male’s word, a frown marring his face before he slowly turned to face him. “A big mistake?” he questioned, everything in him aching to reach out and touch the other male - but that wasn’t something he could do. It was against the rules of the quarantine - and even if Jeremy didn’t care enough about himself to follow the rules, he cared enough about Jake to hold himself back, because Jake needed to get out of this. He couldn’t live with himself if the male didn’t. “Everything about my life is a big mistake. I don’t think I’m about to stop the stupid decisions now.” Slowly, his fingers began tossing the medical supplies back into the small box he’d found them in, his eyes not leaving Jake’s form. “I’m here with you. We’re both stuck in here. And I’m not turning my back. I don’t care what it does to me-” He paused, taking a deep breath. “I was ready to give up on life before all of this happened. You and I both know that.” Neither of them acknowledged it - ever - but it was the truth. “So if I’m gonna die… Why not die loving someone who damn well deserves to be loved?”

   there is a point to be made,    as much as jake hates it   ;   jeremy had been in the hospital for a reason even before the outbreak.     briefly,     he finds his gaze traveling to behold the freshly wrapped wrist of the other,   a new ache in his chest.     this one burns  like  the anger he felt at the entire situation,    but he squashes it down and locks it away.     he can’t be mad at something that happened before they met,     but his thoughts couldn’t help but wonder if jeremy had succeeded   ;   jake would have never known him    -   never would have become infatuated with him   or  be having this conversation now.     subconsciously,    his jaw clenches,   a tell of his overthinking.  he knows he should stop seeing jeremy   ;   distance himself if necessary,     but there’s one thing the virus scare had made him realize  :  he was tired of being alone.     he wanted someone he could rely on,    someone who cared for him and who he could care for just as deeply.     jeremy had provided that  and  as much as he would like to snip the entire thing off,      jake wanted to be selfish.    a strained chuckle leaves his lips as he shakes his head,   arms crossing over his chest  -  a stance that isn’t uncommon for him.    “i can’t believe you’d say something like that when i can’t do anything about it,”    he muses weakly,    a poor attempt at lifting the situation.     it had gotten too deep  and  jake could barely keep his head up.    hadn’t that always been something jake wanted?    love.   connection.     and  here he was running from the possibility of it again.     it had found him when he least expected it   ;   when there was too much uncertainty and too much to fear.    “all i can do is stand here and look at you.   this sucks.”   it’s as close to a verbal acceptance as jake is willing to go.

   jake didn’t know what to expect from the boy.    people were unpredictable  -  and in times of crisis,   the unpredictability skyrocketed.    even he has behaved questionably since the outbreak began   ;   for example,  he was here with this broken boy.     and he wanted to fix him more than anything else   -   maybe not as much as he wanted to see the other get out of this safely.    jake was getting tired of seeing all the death  and  destruction.   if he could save jeremy from that,   he would try his hardest to do so.    like now,   as he warns the the boy that he is no good   because  jake has only ever run   -   only ever broken hearts,   including his own.   his teeth had captured his bottom lip and released it with a nearly disappointed breath.    maybe he was disappointed.   “that’s.....that’s a big mistake,    jeremy,”   he stated firmly,   concealing the ache that he felt.    jake didn’t think he would make it out of this thing alive    -    not when he had been exposed to the virus so frequently.   he’s surprised that he hasn’t been infected yet.    and if he does manage that,     then he would just be adding jeremy’s heart to the list of ones he has broken   and  he didn’t want to have that happen.

     to some,  immortality was deemed a gift  -  little concern for death,  ability to experience the change of the centuries.  in rosalie’s case,  she loathed it;   she longed for the human decisions she could make - like whether she would court a male who showed interest in her  or  how many kids she would birth.   it was ripped away from her in a single night,  a monster reborn in the place of the hopelessly blind girl she had been.   for the longest time,  rosalie had been bitter,  locked in a storm of anger.   revenge hadn’t sated the resent,   but it allowed it to lessen.  she would never be completely alright with the cards she was dealt,  but for now,  she was content.

    she rolls dark crimson around the wine glass,  eyebrow quirked in vague amusement as she stares at the warlock. it’s been a while since she’s made time for the chat,  always busy with younger downworlders who had no direction and no one to guide them  -  something magnus does quite often, too.  “am i cursed with hearing about how wonderful raphael is every time i come visit?”  she chimes in mock question.

     “you want the honest answer?” jake inquires, eyebrows raised as his fingers unlatch the strap for the helmet. it takes a couple seconds before it is successfully undone, his hands grasping at the sides to pull it off and reveal the flattened hair and sweat beneath. “bio-terrorism. can’t make better military grade weapons, but the human body can only fight so much.” he keeps his tone even, the timbre he uses for his police work; dismissive of any emotion that could trickle in.

    a scowl paints itself on her lips, amber irises flicking to her designated twin. rosalie doesn’t blame him for the twist of her mouth into the deep frown or the furrowed eyebrows that accompany it. it wasn’t his fault their brother decided to involve a human too curious for her own good. by all means, their lives hadn’t been normal before she showed up, but since? it had been one train wreck after another. “pardon me for not being optimistic,” she grinds her teeth, hoping he feels every single drop of frustration that leaks from her. the empathy he possesses is the only thing rosalie can ever talk herself into using against him - and she has very strong emotions. “we’ve drawn too much attention here because of her. the volturi has probably heard all about it and is on their way.” eliminating the problem was the volturi’s ways and her family had become the problem. if it came down to a fight against them and the long-standing volturi members - who had special gifts of their own - they were likely not to make it out alive. of course, with the exception of alice and edward.

       the furrowed eyebrows smooth, lips parting in an unexpected chuckle. jake has been carrying the weight of the world on his shoulders for too long, a burden that is near crippling given the current state of the cordon. the irritated and bitter statement that left his clenched teeth should not have been directed at jeremy at all, let alone involving how bad things were outside of the hospital walls. “right, right,” he utters softly, to himself more than anything. a nod follows, tossing the gear he uses for protection to the floor. “be thankful for that. the hospital is one thing, but out there,” he pauses, lips pressing together. “everyone’s gone absolutely crazy.”
